The figure shows the influence of early life factors (including maternal factors and childhood growth) on the burden of type 2 diabetes and other non-communicable diseases [Yajnik, Rev.Endocr Mtab Diord (2008)] EPIGENETIKK The global landscape of NCD. The risk of chronic NCD is influenced by the relationship between developmental and adult environment for members of a population, and is shown as a landscape of risk. Both a poor and a rich developmental environment increase the risk of disease in the next generation (blue line at front), an effect amplified at all levels by a rich adult environment (e.g. an obesogenic diet or physical inactivity). The lowest risk of disease and greatest longevity (green zone), occurs when the developmental environment is optimal (stars) and the adult environment is on the low side of the median.
Fowden A L et al. Physiology 2006;21:29-37 2006 by American Physiological Society. Fowden A L et al. Physiology 2006;21:29-37 2006 by American Physiological Society Risk increases throughout the life-course as a result of declining plasticity and accumulative effects of inadequate responses to new environmental challenges. The greatest increase occurs in adult life, the trajectory is set much earlier: epigenetic processes are induced by cues such as mother s diet and body composition before and during pregnancy, and fetal infant and childhood nutrition and development. Body Composition of Newborn Fat Muscle Viscera Other Professor James: BBC news The scale of the obesity epidemic is such that the world needs a global pact on the best ways to tackle it. Obese children outnumber the malnourished by two to one. There is no point in blaming individuals for being overweight - we need real political leadership to change the environment that is rapidly making the world fat. The fat content of food needs to be labelled clearly, advertisers must be prevented from targeting children and governments must encourage people to get out of their cars.
