Overall content An interdisciplinary, theoretical and case study-based framework for understanding the principles of environmental regulation, risk management, administration and planning. The course includes a general review of the environmental sciences and the political institutions, environmental regulation and legislation, knowledge infrastructures and administrative bodies involved in assessing issues within relevant areas such as pollution, climate, biodiversity and the environment. The course focuses on various approaches to environmental legislation (e.g. national law, supranational regulation such as EU directives, and international agreements such as UNEP protocols). An understanding of the consequences for the environment and human health is the starting-point for an analysis of social historical and current actions to prevent and/or minimise these effects. There is thus a focus on various regulation strategies, including Command and Control regulation, network-oriented governance regulation and voluntary agreements. The course also presents a theoretical approach to understanding the roles of stakeholders in risk management systems in relation to environmental change processes. The lectures include theoretical perspectives, methodological approaches, the presentation of case studies, panel discussions and exercises. Theory and practical application are therefore constantly interlinked during the course.
Teaching and working methods Form of examination The course includes lectures, exercises, discussions and group work. A group report of between 15 and 50 standard pages in length, on the basis of 2,400 characters (incl. spaces) per page, excluding the front page, table of contents, bibliography and any appendices, must be submitted before the student can take the concluding oral examination. There is an oral examination of 20 minutes duration (per student), including assessment, on the basis of the group report. The examination takes the form of a conversation between the students, the examiner and the co-examiner. Students are examined in the entire group report, in such a way as to allow for individual assessment. An individual assessment is undertaken of each student s performance. The assessment consists of an overall assessment of both the group report and the oral presentation.
