SpeedUp in a nutshell Started 1 st March 2014 and will end at 1 st June 2018 Current budget : 15.6 Mill. NOK SpeedUp finances one PhD degree (starting in August 2014) 3 to 4 PhD degrees will be connected to the project (financed by the Norwegian Road Administration (1), NTNU (2) BIA project "Brukerstyrt innovasionsarena" (User-driven Research based Innovation) with funding from the Norwegian research council, Project Norway, and the partners 4
SpeedUp in a nutshell (cont.) 6 industry partners but we are aiming for 8 Reinertsen Large Norwegian construction company Jernbaneverket Norwegian National Rail Administration Statsbygg Norwegian Directorate of Public Construction and Property Management Norwegian Armed Forces (Forsvaret) OPAK Project management Company FAVEO Project management Company Oslo municipality 4 (5) academic partners SINTEF NTNU Aalto University: Helsinki, Finland Construction Industry Institute (CII) University of California, Berkeley, USA (not active) 5
SpeedUp in a nutshell (cont.) BIA projects needs to balance Practical innovation for the companies Developing new theory and world class publications Collecting data and testing new concepts with practical solutions that can make a difference for the partners short term benefits with long term theoretical solutions 6
Why SpeedUp? "We need more projects that are done faster" (Statsbygg Norwegian Directorate of Public Construction and Property Management, Jernbanverket Norwegian National Rail Administration, Oslo municipality, Norwegian Armed Forces "We can make more money if we are able to plan and execute projects faster" without jeopardising the quality and health of the workers (Reinertsen, OPAK, FAVEO) "If we are to stay in the business we need to work smarter and faster then our competitors" (Reinertsen, OPAK, FAVEO) "organisations that manage to carry out their tasks faster can also increase their attractiveness and capacity, which in turn can increase the amount of tasks and the income for the company" (Reinertsen, OPAK, FAVEO) 7
How we see the world to day "faster is not necessarily better" How we see the world today 8
What if this is a more correct model? How we see the world today 9
Objectives SpeedUp Reduce execution time in the projects with 30-50 % compered to 2013 standard. Beslutning om konkretisering Prosjektutvikling - ferdigstillelse DG 1 DG DG 1 2 3 DG 4 Planfase Gjennomføringsfase 50 % reduksjon 30 % reduksjon Gevinstrealiseringsfase We need to establish what the "typical execution time" is, and where the "biggest time-thieves and bottlenecks" are 10
Goals mentioned in the application "Reduce 50 % of the time spent in the planning phase and 30 % of the time used in the execution phase on large construction projects. SpeedUp will develop and test strategic, tactical and operational concepts that can improve the total time-usage on projects together with its industrial partners. 1.
Four key research challenges are identified so far mentioned in the application Coordination and cooperation Integration of planning and control Early warning by the help of performance measurement Coordination of construction site logistics "Not carved in stone" can be changed Depending on what we discover in the companies Depending on what we discover in the AS-IS study 12
Work-break-down structure mentioned in the application Time-thieves and bottlenecks Starting up innovation in the companies - Not discussed in detail at this stage Challenges in the planning phase Challenges in the execution phase? www.prosjektnorge.no 13
