As the international tension worsens over sanctions against Russia over its conduct in Ukraine and alleged links to the shooting down of the Malaysia Airlines plane, Russia is moving to introduce a one-year ban on food imports from the countries supporting the sanctions.the ban will be in place from Thursday, with the custom codes for fresh fish, frozen fish, crustaceons and molluscs all included on the list of banned products. They will be in place for a year or until the sanctions against Russia are lifted, as president Vladimir Putin ramps up his opposition to the west.. Russia s government will monitor the situation to ensure a balance in commodity markets and prevent the acceleration of price increases on agricultural products, raw materials and food, the document states. The government will organize the implementation of daily operational monitoring and control of the relevant markets for agricultural products, raw materials and food, it states. Russia will also look to develop raw materials and develop measures aimed at increasing supply. The list also includes fruit; nuts; sausages; meat; cheese, milk; dairy products; and vegetables. The news comes after a press conference on Thursday from Ilya Shestakov, deputy minister of agriculture and head of the Federal Agency for Fishery, in which he said he has no doubt that Russia can replace imported fish, according to Vedomosti. Before the ban was announced, he said a ban on fish for states contacts was already in the works He noted the government has already implemented some measures to stimulate the supply of fish by Russian companies to the domestic market in state contracts, such as offering a 15% preference for such contracts. Based on those balances that exist now, we export more than import, he is quoted as having said.
