Tentative Program KOMMERSIALISERING AV TEKNOLOGIBASERTE IDÈER Hvor kommer gode ideer fra? Hvordan skille en suksess fra en fiasko? Hvordan velge og utvikle strategiske allianser? Hvordan oppnå finansiering? Hvordan velge riktig exit strategi?
Spesielt viktig i vår sammenheng er ITEC, Institute for Technology based Entrepreneurship and Commercialisation. 1

Tentative Program Day 1: April 26, 2010 The Entrepreneurial Process We will explore the entrepreneurial process and the skills and characteristics that are shared by successful entrepreneurs. This session will also discuss the key elements of a successful team and also explore how cultural factors come into play in entrepreneurial ventures. Opportunity Recognition and Assessment Where do good ideas come from? How does an entrepreneur decide which ones to pursue and which ones to discard. Recognizing opportunities that might exist around us and quickly assessing their value and appropriateness for further pursuit are essential and learnable skills. We will explore best practices for both. Day 2: April 27, 2010 Business Models A Business Model is a description of the key decisions and trade offs that define a business. Each of these will have important strategic implications for the venture. In this session, we will explore the best practices for matching a venture s business model and its strategic goals. When might a decision that reduces time to market or required investment not be the best one in the long term? We will build a framework for identifying the tradeoffs and weighing their implications. Financing and Funding Strategies In the first part of this session, we will examine the ways that a venture determines the amount and timing of the capital it will raise, as well as the sources that it will pursue. We will develop a framework for identifying the critical milestones for a venture that represent inflection points for its value and discuss how to use this information to develop a successful funding strategy. The second part of this session will include a panel discussion among several members of the financial community. We will explore how they make financing decisions and how they manage their relationships with companies that they finance. Day 3: April 28, 2010 Business Planning Process We will discuss the business plan as a process and explore best practices for developing a robust process for launching a successful venture. A business plan is more than a fundraising tool. It is a process by which an entrepreneur identifies the strategies and critical resources that will make his/her venture succeed. Once developed, this plan becomes an essential part of the strategic and operational planning process in the organization. Open Innovation / Strategic Alliances In today s world, companies cannot afford to rely entirely on their own research, but also often license processes or intellectual property from other companies. In addition, innovative entrepreneurs and companies often find that they can gain the greatest benefit from their discoveries by partnering with established firms and taking advantage of their complementary resources. In this session, we will discuss some best practices for open innovation, from the perspective of both the entrepreneur and the strategic partner. We
will also examine the strategic implications of some of the most common forms of alliance framework for identifying the tradeoffs and weighing their implications. Environment for Innovation and Entrepreneurship What are the essential elements of a fertile climate for entrepreneurial activity? Which of these can be created in a community when they do not already exist? We will explore the entrepreneurial ecosystem of Boston and compare it to that in the clusters of Norway, with the hope of identifying the best practices that each has to offer. Started in 1839, Boston University is the fourth largest independent university in the United States and the fifth largest research institution. With over 5,500 international students and scholars from 135 countries and over 2,000 students studying abroad each year, Boston University is considered in many circles to be America s most international university. Since 2002, Boston University has worked in collaboration with the University of Oslo s School of Entrepreneurship, Gründerskolen, to facilitate a unique cutting-edge learning experience for aspiring young entrepreneurs from Norway. Supported heavily by the Norwegian government, the program is guided by a bold vision to re-engineer entrepreneurship in Norway. The hope is to position Norway as a center of excellence for both technology and business innovation by identifying, training, and motivating a new generation of exceptional young entrepreneurs. The School of Management and ITEC have continued to collaborate with Innovation Norway and a number of educational institutions in Norway on a variety of special topics including Intellectual Property, Technological Transfer and Commercialization as well as Marketing Medical Technology in the US. Peter R. Russo Executive-In-Residence/Senior Lecturer, Strategy and Policy Director, Entrepreneurship Programs ITEC Peter Russo is an Executive in Residence who teaches courses at the MBA and Undergraduate level, directs entrepreneurship activities of ITEC, and serves as faculty advisor to the students concentrating in Entrepreneurship at the graduate and undergraduate level. Prior to joining the faculty at BU, Professor Russo served as the CEO of Data Instruments (currently Honeywell Data Instruments). He received his M.B.A. degree from Harvard University in 1980 and a B.S. degree from the Montclair State University in1974. Paul McManus Director, International Programs for ITEC Lecturer, Strategy and Innovation Paul McManus brings over thirty years of experience in building, leading, advising and investing in high-growth ventures within the high technology and venture capital industries. He lectures inter-nationally on these topics and is a member of the Academic Advisory Board for the University of Oslo s Masters Programme in Entrepreneurial Management. Mr. McManus received his M.B.A. from Boston University in 1986 and his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 1977.
