1 NO EN Social Work (Bachelor) The Bachelor of Social Work programme educates user-oriented and reflective professionals qualified to care for people in vulnerable situations. Students learn how to work in order to prevent, solve or reduce social problems. The programme provides students with knowledge of Norwegian society and human behaviour. Student gain knowledge of management organs and insight into Norwegian society's governance structure. The programme also qualifies students to design and implement social policy. The programme is highly integrated with other study programmes at The Faculty of Social Sciences and especially with the Bachelor of Child Welfare study programme. 4 Study plan PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION An understanding of professional social work as an interplay between profession, societal conditions and relationships of social policy is recurrent in the structure and composition of the course. The teaching is built on humanistic values and traditions related to the UN s Declaration on Human Rights and relevant UN conventions, as are also proclaimed in the profession s basic ethical statements. Weight is also given to developing awareness of the basic values of the profession by developing the students ability to reflect critically on their own values, attitudes and philosophies of life. The study will thus educate user-oriented, reflected and analytical professional practitioners who are qualified to exercise care services in regard to people in vulnerable life situations. LEARNING OUTCOMES Knowledge Knowledge of the history and tradition of social work, its distinctive characteristics and its role in society. Broad knowledge of and insight into central themes, theories, questions and processes pertaining to the profession. Knowledge of and familiarity with methods for the prevention, resolution or reduction of social problems. Understand the ethical challenges involved in professional practice, research and mediation. Knowledge and understanding of the ideas, value basis and structure of the welfare state, and the function and significance of social policy for society. Skills Ability to master professional skills, techniques and modes of expression. Ability to apply professional knowledge and relevant results of research and development work to practical and theoretical questions. Ability to reflect over own professional practice and adjust the same under guidance. Ability to identify ethical challenges in the practice field and through reflection and raising awareness to make reasoned choices. Ability to practice the profession in the context of its most central areas of application. General competence Insight into relevant professional and occupational questions. Understanding of the commitment that is embodies in the value basis of social work to raise critical questions regarding societal and structural conditions that cause the exclusion and marginalisation of individuals or groups. Ability to mediate central attributes of the profession, including theories, questions and solutions, both in writing and orally. Ability to plan and implement varied work tasks and projects over time, alone and in a group, in keeping with ethical demands and guidelines. Understanding of the significance of interdisciplinary cooperation and interaction with different professions. FURTHER EDUCATION The bachelor's degree in social work (social worker) provides, amongst other things, the basis for seeking admission to the Master of Social Work or Master of Science in Rehabilitation at University of Nordland. In addition, a number of colleges and universities provide relevant further education opportunities. STUDY ABROAD Students may apply to undertake their practice period abroad. COSTS No specific costs other than semester registration fee and course literature. SPECIFIC ARRANGEMENTS FOR RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING If the applicant does not fulfill the requirements for the Higher Education Entrance Qualification but has experience-based competence relevant to the field of study, he or she may apply for recognition of this competence in order to fulfill the admission requirements. 5 EXAMINATION REGULATIONS, ASSESSMENT AND GRADING The Norwegian system for grading and assessment using the letter grades A - F, in which A denotes the best/highest grade and F denotes "not passed". Grades can also be awarded as "passed", "not passed", "approved" and "not approved". Read Examinations rules and regulations ASSESSMENT METHODS Compulsory attendance and participation in activities. Assessment includes oral examination, reflective studies, communication training and preparation for professional practice. Refer to specific regulations related to complusory attendance. Supervised professional practice for one semester. Professional practice must be approved in accordance with relevant regulations. Students must have achieved an average grade of C or better in order to apply for practice abroad. Students must pass all examinations in the first year of study in order to commende the second year of study. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS The final examination in the programme is an oral examination in Interdisciplinary Professional Learning. PROGRAMME EVALUATION The programme is evaluated via student questionnaire, as well as by the programme director. The evaluations form a part of the University's quality assurance system. 6 Subject descriptions (10) Study foundation semester - Individual, Society and Science EX150S The goal for this semester course is twofold: 1. The course enables students to be better able to study and get involved in studies. It also lays the foundation for the expertise and skills students should have as students and in relation to their future work. It emphasizes in particular: Communication and reflection skills Writing and presentation skills 2. The course provides a basic introduction to philosophy and the history of science, and to central research themes and teaching at the faculty. Currently, this includes the following topics: Democracy, gender equality and participation Norwegian Society and the World Ethics in Practice and Science Globalization, Trade, Environment and Risk The Media's role and power Social Analysis and Political Systems Science s role and power Welfare Society and Welfare State Development No costs except semester registration fee and course literature. TEACHING ACTIVITIES AND METHODS Teaching methoda and learning activities consist of a mixture of lectures, field trips, student activity, seminars and group work. Selected parts of the curriculum will be discussed in lectures and students are responsible for reviewing the whole curriculum. Students are expected to influence the content of discussions and workshops by contributing with their own suggestions and comments. Knowledge of the development, financing and decision-making structures of the welfare state are covered. We explore theories of relevance to the tasks social work faces. These are theories that contribute to an understanding of human action, the promotion of development, emancipation, mobilization of power, the relations between individuals, groups and society and the causal relations in which social problems arise and are maintained. The focus is on social work in public administration in general and the state employment and welfare service (NAV) in particular.
