The 2002 is a year of delicious fresh fruit, ripe tannins, medium to medium-full body and good acidity: succulent, to put it in a nutshell. Quarterly Review of Wines, Spring 2004 Clive Coates, M.W.

2 Start of Harvest September 19, 2002 End of Harvest: September 30, 2002 BOURGOGNES 2002 VINTAGE REPORT Level of natural alcohol: Village wines : 12.03% Reds Premier crus: 12.68% Grand Crus: 12.75% ph: 3.32 Total acidity: 4.55 ph before malolactic fermentation: Reds= 3.44 Whites = 3.22 Destemming: 100% Average cuvaison: Yields: Ripeness: Condition of the grapes: Quality of the Vintage: 21 days The yields were below average; this was due to the dry weather during the summer months as well as a quite strict cluster thinning in July. Very satisfactory. Vine growth was in advance, as was the budding-out. After a dry spring and summer, we harvested healthy grapes whose natural sugar level was well above average (12º5 to 13º5 natural). The sunny weather, without being too hot, allowed a good level of acidity to be preserved, an important factor in the potential for ageing. Satisfactory. The month of September was sunny and dry. This continued throughout the harvest period with cool nights and mornings. The harvest was therefore carried out under ideal conditions and the grapes were picked in the cool mornings. The few mildewed bunches were eliminated during sorting. In general, 2002 was a very dry year without any notable climatic accidents (neither frost nor hail). Red wines: 2002 is quite a diverse vintage. Success in the domaine was due to good control over yields (cluster thinning in July) and the excellent quality of the grapes (very satisfactory condition) and higher than average natural sugar levels. The wines are nicely concentrated; they are garnet-red with purple-blue highlights; they are fruity and full, and the tannins can be felt but are not aggressive is a good, powerful, classy vintage its ageing potential is good to very good. White wines: These wines have also turned out well. They are already interesting to taste, although the malolactic fermentations are not yet all finished. They show good acidity and mellowness balance and, like the reds, they should age very well. Christophe VOISIN, Export Director

3 bourgognes 2002 VINTAGE REPORT FROM THE BUREAU INTERPROFESSIONNEL DES VINS DE BOURGOGNES THE 2002 VINTAGE: A GRAND YEAR IN BURGUNDY. The professionals are unanimous: The harvest was exceptional, and 2002 should be a very great vintage for Burgundy. A dry summer, sunny autumn weather in September, beautiful grapes with great concentration and sugars... all conditions came together this year to produce robust and complex wines with very beautiful aromatic potential. We had all the chances to produce remarkable wines. From the beginning of September, the richness in sugars often reached exceptional levels, with very good maturity indexes, signs of a good sugar-acid balance for the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as well as the Gamay and Aligoté. As a consequence of this good maturation, with the first tastings we can discover red wines of intense color with garnet nuances and endowed with a beautiful tannic structure. Depending on the level of maturity, these wines evoke sustained aromas of red and black fruits. They present great diversity of expression, depending upon the mastery of their production and the care taken during harvest. The white wines, intense and powerful, have an aromatic richness that combines fruitiness and minerality. Round and long in the mouth, they are well balanced, harmonious. Both the white and the red wines of the 2002 vintage fully express the character of their terroirs and promise great cellaring potential. As confirmed by Hubert Camus, president of the B.I.V.B. ( Bureau InterProfessionnel des Vins de Bourgognes ) and viticulturalist from Gevrey-Chambertin: In 2002, all domaines and Burgundy houses have the opportunity to produce remarkable wines. Weather conditions: The Burgundian exception! The growing cycle of the vineyard was marked by drought. The grapes matured under sunny skies and hot temperatures, punctuated by a few storms. The prevailing weather conditions favored concentration in the grapes and preserved good health in the vineyards. In addition, harvest took place under ideal conditions, a combination of sunshine and cool freshness. (from the North wind)

4 WHITE WINES BOUZERON, ALIGOTÉ A rental arrangement he has with Aubert de Villaine. Already in bottle. Slightly heavy. Fruity but it lacks a little freshness. Perhaps the wine is suffering from the bottling. But this was in June. From 2004/2005. MONTAGNY, LES JONCS Ripe, fresh, stylish and very attractive. Medium body. Balanced and full of fruit. Very good for what is is. From MERCUREY, CLOS ROCHETTE Less attractive because it is a bit reduced and therefore rigid. It seems ok underneath. From 2006/2007. CORTON CHARLEMAGNE Discreet, opulent nose. Rich and fat. Good grip. But quite a different beast from Bonneau du Martray s. Full bodied and profound. Lots of depth and very classy fruit. Very fine. 5 MAISON JOSEPH NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES François Faiveley has acquired the 2.37 hectare monopoly of the Beaune Clos de l Écu from the Jaboulet-Verchere family. Jadot have been farming this parcel recently. The crop was percent less than in 2001 in the Faiveley estate. Lovely wines here. RED WINES BOURGOGNE Full bodied and rich. Some tannin. A little of depth and character for a generic. Very good. From MERCUREY, LES MAUVARENNES Good colour. Soft, plump and fruity. Good substance, grip and depth. Positive finish. Very good for what it is again. From 2006/2007. MERCUREY, LA FRAMBOISIÈRE Richer and more succulent. Good grip. Good substance. Ripe and fragrant. Long and satisfying. Even better than the Mauvarennes. From MERCUREY, CLOS DES MYGLANDS Even richer and fatter and riper. Good tannin. A touch of oak. It needs time. Really quite concentrated. This is very good indeed. CÔTE DE BEAUNE VILLAGES From Ladoix. Plump and ample. Medium body. A fruity wine. Good substance and grip. Really very classy for what it is. Very good. From LADOIX Just a bit more to it. Slightly more spice. Stylish, round and ripe. Very good. From CLIVE COATES MW THE VINE, NO. 228 JANUARY 2004 NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES, LES LAVIÈRES This is clean, pure, balanced and positive. Medium-full body. Lovely ripe fruit. Very good tannins. Long. Surprisingly together and classy. Very composed. Very good indeed for a village wine. From GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN, LES MARCHAIS Not quite as impressive as the Nuits-Saint- Georges Lavières. But once again lovely fruit. Composed, balanced and quite structured. A little more obviously tannic. But long and very good. From NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES, LES PORÊTS SAINT GEORGES Late malos here. Good colour. Lovely nose. Very pure. Very composed. Full, concentrated and classy. Lots of depth. Full bodied, ripe, concentrated and intense on the palate. Vigorous. Some tannin. Backward but very classy. Fine plus. From NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES, LES VIGNERONDES This is rich and quite round, compared with the Porêts Saint-Georges, on the nose. A little less tannic. But more sophisticated perhaps. The nose is very lovely. On the palate the fruit is very fine. Very good grip. Long and complex and classy. From 2012.

6 MAISON JOSEPH NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES RED WINES NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES, LES DAMODES Malo only 30% done. Fullish colour. Quite austere. At quite a different stage development from the above. It seems fine. But this is out of my league. Malos are usually finished in October! NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES, LES CHAIGNOTS Very good colour. A bit closed-in on the nose but very, very rich and ripe and succulent. Fullish body. Very, very concentrated on the palate. Very good tannins. Excellent grip. A wine of fine style and energy. Very long. Very lovely. From NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES, LES SAINT-GEORGES Fine colour. Malo 90% done. Very, very lovely nose. Splendidly concentrated. Splendidly balanced and classy too. Full body. Rich. Some tannin. Marvellous fruit. This needs time but it is very fine indeed. From GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN, LA COMBE AUX MOINES This is strangely a bit light, even weak, compared with the rest. The colour is only medium. On the palate it is a little astringent. I don t think it is anything more than something pleasant and fruity for the medium term. To be seen again. From GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN, CAZETIERS Much better colour. Very good rich, stylish nose. Fullish bodied, rich and vigorous on the palate. Very good tannin. Much more energy than the Combe aux Moines. Long and very stylish. Fine plus. From CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY, LES FUÉES Good colour. Very lovely nose. A little more oaky than the wines above. But ripe, rich, round, generous and fragrant. Very stylish. Very complex. Very Chambolle. Very long. Very, very classy. Very fine. From GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN, LES ISSARTS Faiveley was fermier here. He is now proprietor. This is medium-full bodied, stylish, rich and rather more supple and approachable than most of the Nuits-Saint-Georges. Easy to appreciate. Lots of charm. Very good plus. From GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN, CHAMPONNETS Fuller and richer. More backward. But also a little more flexible than the majority of the Nuits. Fullish body. Slightly earthy. Good acidity. Not too austere and with plenty of depth. Very good indeed. From CLIVE COATES MW THE VINE, NO. 228 JANUARY 2004 CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY, LA COMBE D ORVEAU Good colour. Very lovely nose. Ripe, fat, succulent and very elegant. Very approachable. Very good grip. Fullish body. Vigorous, balanced and fragrant. Fine as well. But the Fuées has more class and more depth. From ECHÉZEAUX Faiveley s vines are situated between those of Mongeard and Jacques Seysses. 8.5 ares. Fine colour. A little closed-in on the nose. Full and quite tannic. Quite backward. Very good fruit and very good grip. But it doesn t quite sing. Late malos here? The finish seems fine. From 2012.

7 MAISON JOSEPH NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES RED WINES MAZIS-CHAMBERTIN Good colour. Lovely nose. Pure and classy. Ripe, rich and refined. Very fine classy fruit. Fullish body. Excellent grip and balance. Very, very long and lovely on the palate. This is very fine. From LATRICIÈRES-CHAMBERTIN Good colour. I can never persuade myself that Latricières isn t a bit rustic compared with the Mazis-Chambertin. Just the same here on the nose. Ample and fruity on the palate. Slightly less austere and more spicy. But a little more tannic too. Very good indeed or fine but not great. From CLOS DE VOUGEOT 15 year old vines. Decent but a little slight after the Latricières. Ripe but slightly rigid. From CORTON, CLOS DES CORTONS Good colour. Rich and fat. Quite full. Plenty of depth. Very good fruit. Good grip. But no means a monster though. Ripe and quite profound. This is very fine and very elegant. But not quite great. From CHAMBERTIN, CLOS DE BÈZE I was expecting rather more substance here. This is not a blockbuster either. Fullish bodied but not full. Very good grip. Not that tannic. Rich and fruity but not exactly vigorous or concentrated. Very fine plus but not special again. It is richer and sweeter than the Mazis but not that much better. From MUSIGNY Already in bottle. Very good colour. This is really special. It is a pity that there are less than 150 bottles of it. Full bodied and soft tannins. Very fragrant. 9 March/April 2004 Issue Red Burgundies: (introductory remarks)... utterly delicious... The young 2002s were downright seductive when I carried out my extensive tastings in Burgundy in November... The 2002s lead with their fruit and varietal character, but they have no shortage of extract and many wines pack formidable hidden power. The fruit is ripe and succulent... Textures are rich and often downright silky. The wines show an attractive balance of sugars, acids and tannins... In a nutshell, the 2002s taste like wines made from healthy, concentrated fruit. Domaine Faiveley. François Faiveley is hardly alone in believing that the 2001s will outlast the 2002s. The 2002s will be better to drink in the next five or six years; we had more grape sugars in 2002, but the vintage lacks the acidity to be a long-term year, he told me. The 2001s have more acidity, more of a spinal column, and will last longer. We had a September miracle in 2001, and great harvest weather that lasted into October. He summed up the two years this way: 2001 is in the cabernet style, while 2002 is in the merlot style. (Wilson-Daniels, St. Helena, CA) 2002 Mercurey Clos des Myglands: Good full red. Lively aromas of fresh berries and flowers. Juicy and fairly intense, with firm acids and slightly green flavors. Finishes with solid but fine tannins and good length. (This seemed distinctly riper than a sample of Mercurey La Framboisière, which was juicy and aromatic but a bit tart.) Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Lavières: Bright, deep red-ruby color. Blackberry, licorice and fresh herbs on the nose. Then sweet and supple on the palate, with fat flavors of black fruits and licorice. Nicely round for this cuvée. Finishes with soft, fine tannins Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Porêts Saint-Georges: Good deep red. Expressive aromas of black- and redcurrant, licorice and mint. Shapely, intense and fruity, with bright flavors of berries and licorice. Finishes with a firm tannic spine and very good length Nuits-Saint-Georges Chaignots: Good deep red. Expressive aromas of redcurrant, smoke, earth and nutty oak. Lush and sweet, with red fruit flavors complicated by notes of fresh herbs and mint. Tannins are quite suave. Like the Saint-Georges, this tiny cuvée is normally bottled without filtration Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges: Deep red-ruby. Very dark aromas of cassis, blackberry, licorice, minerals, tar and violet. Juicy, tightly wound and impressively concentrated, with black fruit flavors wrapped around a firm acid spine. Penetrating, structured and very long, with lovely clarity of flavor. Still a trace of malic acidity remaining Gevrey-Chambertin Les Issarts: Medium red. Musky red fruits and smoke on the nose; much less primary than the Saint-Georges. Supple, moderately ripe and smaller-scaled, but with attractive balance. Perhaps hiding more than it s showing today Chambertin Les Champonnets: Medium red. Cool aromas of redcurrant, maraschino cherry and mint. Pliant and sweet in the mouth, lifted by licorice and mint notes. Deeper and more serious than the Issarts, finishing with fairly sizable, dusty tannins Gevrey-Chambertin Combe aux Moines: Good full red-ruby color. Pure, perfumed aromas of peppery black raspberry. Fat, sweet and sappy in the mouth; a step up in density and sweetness from the Issarts and Champonnets. Finishes with finer tannins and very good length Gevrey-Chambertin Cazetiers: Good medium red. Redcurrant, licorice and smoke on the nose. Broad, sweet and full, with a fine-grained texture and lovely inner-mouth verve. Not yet expressing itself, but this has near-grand cru volume. Finishes with fine tannins and excellent length

10 March/April 2004 Issue Red Burgundy (cont.) Domaine Faiveley Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d Orveaux: Good medium red. Pure, floral aromas of raspberry, strawberry and stone. Juicy, leanish and intense; a more vertical style of wine than the Cazetiers, and very elegantly styled. With a bit less buffering fat, the tannins here seem a tad tough. But the flavors offer clarity and finesse Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées: Dark red. Full-blown, expressive aromas of redcurrant, cherry, licorice, tobacco and minerals. Fat and generous, with flavors of redcurrant, tobacco and herbs. Finishes long, with noticeably firm tannins. A strong, structured premier cru, in the style of a Bonnes- Mares. More powerful than, but not as fine as, the Combe d Orveaux Echézeaux: Medium red. Pure aromas of redcurrant, cherry, flint and minerals. Tightly wound and firm-edged, conveying a distinctly drier impression than most of the foregoing samples. But certainly juicy and fresh. Finishes firmly tannic, with subtle length. A bit dry today and hard to assess ? Mazis-Chambertin: Good medium red. Deep, smoky aromas of ripe berries, meat and tobacco. Silkysmooth and rich on entry, then ripe, layered and deep. Seductively rich and deceptively easy to taste today. This has terrific stuffing. Finishes with very fine tannins and excellent length Latricières-Chambertin: Good deep red. Pure but subdued aromas of raspberry, minerals and licorice; less obviously ripe than the Mazis. Tightly wound and penetrating, with red fruit and licorice flavors firmed by brisk acidity. In a distinctly harder, more minerally style than the Mazis, more dominated by its structure and much less accessible today. This will need a good seven or eight years of cellaring Clos Vougeot: Good deep red. Perfumed, pure aromas of cassis, cherry, flowers and mint. Dense and expansive in the mouth, with considerable complexity for a young Clos Vougeot. Finishes with big, broad tannins that avoid dryness. Showing well today Corton Clos des Cortons: Full, deep red. Complex, vinous, youthfully medicinal nose hints at licorice, minerals, smoke and game. Full and concentrated, yet the flavors are a bit tight and inscrutable. A bit of an early cipher, as it s less austere than usual at this stage and yet the flavors are distinctly cool. Best today on the finish, where the substantial but sweet tannins make themselves felt quite late Chambertin Clos de Bèze: Good deep red. Complex inviting aromas of dark berries, game, rose petal and nutty oak. Lush, seamless and round; sweet and rich. Finishes with very fine tannins and lingering sweetness. Very classy wine, deceptively pliant on the back end but built for aging. Except for the Musigny, Faiveley used 50% new oak for his 2002 grand crus, putting the wine that was in new barrel into used barrels following the malolactic, and vice-versa Le Musigny (just 148 bottles produced; bottled two weeks prior to my visit): Deep red. Stony red fruits, tobacco and sexy oak scents on the nose. At once silky and sharply delineated, with harmonious acids and mineral and floral notes allowing this young wine to dance on the palate. Superb, slow-mounting finish features extremely suave tannins and subtle hints of minerals, mint and fresh herbs. Wonderfully aromatic, classy Burgundy. 94 (+?).

11 bourgognes MONTAGNY LES JONCS Montagny is the southernmost appellation of the Côte Chalonnaise and is restricted to growing only one varietal: Chardonnay. The appellation is about 6 miles wide by 3.5 miles north to south. The tiny, artisan village of Montagny-les-Buxy seems to be one of the sleepiest parts of Burgundy, according to Robert M. Parker, Jr., but the best wines have a delicious buttery, nutty, apple-like Chardonnay fruitiness, crisp acidity... Montagny Les Joncs is a Faiveley estate vineyard of 7.47 acres; average vine age is 14 years. Les Joncs means bulrushes which grow around a spring at the bottom of the vineyard. Many people ask us for advice about white Burgundy, and after a broad tasting we finally decided to recommend that if you look for Saint-Veran and Montagny, you ll be fine. But even we weren t prepared for this wine (Faiveley Montagny Les Joncs ). Rich fruit. Some oak. Nutmeg. Crème brûlée. Toast, carambola, caramel, pineapple, lychee. A fruit bowl inside a soulful wine with weight. Egg custard. Flan.... this is also memorable because it was such a good deal, too. TASTINGS / by Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher The Wall Street Journal, Dec. 27, 2002 MERCUREY DOMAINE DE LA CROIX JACQUELET Mercurey Domaine de la Croix Jacquelet, from the Côte Chalonnaise, is an estate wine from Faiveley s own vineyards in Mercurey. Faiveley is the only producer in Burgundy who ages his village wines in new oak. This red burgundy is powerfully structured, with ripe, supple tannins and moderate acidity. The ripe cherry fruit aromas and flavors dominate. The finish is long, velvety and very fruity, with cherries and strawberries lingering on the palate. Cellaring potential is five to six years. This is a wine that is already enjoyable, complementing red meats and poultry. NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES Faiveley Nuits-Saint-Georges comes from the domaine s own estate vineyard of 6.35 acres. The average age of the vines is 30 years: the oldest vines planted in 1959 and 1960, the most recent in Native or natural yeast fermentation, which Faiveley has practiced for the past 25 years, helps give the wine its terroir character, depth of flavor, and enhanced aromas. This wine will cellar for 7-10 years, developing lovely Pinot Noir cherry and plum flavors.

Born in 1823, Joseph took over and expanded the domaine which his father, Pierre, had founded in Under Joseph Faiveley, the domaine earned its reputation as one of Burgundy s finest and most trusted, with an unparalleled selection from the Côte de Nuits and Côte Chalonnaise. BBourgogne Georges Faiveley Chardonnay is named after François Faiveley s grandfather, who was born in Georges Faiveley co-founded the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin in He imparted to his young grandson the three secrets of fine Burgundy production: Low yields, low yields, and... low yields. François has never forgotten the mantra.

13 B GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Chardonnay COLOUR: Pale yellow NOSE: Fresh and citrusy with a touch of vanilla PALATE: Well-balanced on the palate. It is rich and supple with no sign of heaviness thanks to its freshness. Citrus, lemony flavors with subtle hints of vanilla-oak from fermentation in new oak casks. Despite its youth, it is already a pleasure to drink. bourgognes BOURGOGNE BLANC GEORGES 2002 MADE LIKE THE GREAT WHITE BURGUNDIES. 50% AGED IN NEW OAK FOR 12 MONTHS. CELLARING POTENTIAL: 4 to 6 years COMPLEMENTS: Fish, shellfish, especially scallops SERVING TEMPERATURE: 10 C. or 50 F.

Despite its youth it is already enjoyable to taste. CELLARING POTENTIAL: 4 to 6 years COMPLEMENTS: White meat, cold cooked meats SERVING TEMPERATURE: 15 C. or 59 F.
