The Blue Devils have lost six straight games since opening the season with a victory over Elon and are coming off a road loss to Tech, improved to 5-2 last week with a victory over Notre Dame at the New Meadowlands Stadium a week ago. The game between Duke and will be televised on CBS College Sports with Tom McCarthy (play-byplay), Randy Cross (analyst) and Kaylee Hartung (sideline) calling the action. CUTCLIFFE VS NON-CONFERENCE Duke head coach David Cutcliffe has a 2-1 record in non-conference road games since taking over at the helm of the Blue Devils prior to He led Duke to a 10-7 victory at Vanderbilt on Oct. 25, 2008, in his fi rst season. Junior running back Jay Hollingsworth scored Duke s only touchdown of the game on a six-yard run in the third quarter. It was his second rushing touchdown of the season. Sophomore wide receiver Conner Vernon became the fi rst wide receiver in school history with 40 or more catches in both his freshman and sophomore seasons with a six-reception outing. Senior linebacker Abraham Kromah posted double digit tackles for the fourth straight game, leading the squad with 12 stops. He also recorded his fi rst sack of the season in the contest. Duke forced two fumbles in the game. Sydney Sarmiento and Jordon Byas each had caused fumbles while Matt Daniels had one fumble recovery. Junior punter Alex King punted nine times for an average of 44.0 yards per kick. He had a long of 62 yards with three punts of 50 or more. He also placed fi ve kicks inside the 20-yard line. The one-hour tailgate show is hosted by John Roth. Two-time Broadcaster of the Year Bob Harris, the voice of the Blue Devils for the past 34 seasons, calls all the action for Duke fans each game. He was inducted into the Stanly County (N.C.) Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Sports Hall of Fame in Analyst Wes Chesson joins Harris in the booth each game and is in his 31st season providing color commentary for Duke games. 4 Game 8 - Duke vs. - Oct. 30, Team Notes DUKE REACHES CAPACITY IN WALLACE WADE The Blue Devils reached capacity in Wallace Wade Stadium in each of the fi rst two home games with crowds of 33,941 against Elon and 39,042 against Alabama and are averaging an attendance of 31,546 through four games this season. Duke s crowd of 39,042 against Alabama was the largest since Nov. 19, 1994 when 40,103 fans showed up for a victory over the Blue Devils. Duke added 3,904 seats with temporary bleachers for the game with the Crimson Tide, increasing capacity to 37,845. Before this season, the last time Duke reached capacity for a home game was 2001 when 35,206 fans were in attendance for the Blue Devils loss to N.C. State. The home attendance in a four-game span of 126,183 is the most since 1994 when Duke tallied 127,818 in its fi nal four home games against Army, Clemson, and (last three were ranked teams). The last time Duke scored 40 or more points in backto-back games was in 1991 when the Blue Devils had 42 against both Rutgers and Colgate in the second and third games of the season. The 89 points combined are the most in a two-game span since Duke had 90 combined points against South Carolina (33) and N.C. State (57) in Under head coach David Cutcliffe, Duke has scored 40 or more points fi ve times with a 4-1 record in those contests. The 48 points scored by the Blue Devils were one shy of the top point total under Cutcliffe. Duke had 49 points last season against both N.C. Central and N.C. State. L, DUKE PLAYS SIX TRUE FRESHMEN Six true freshmen have received playing time for the Blue Devils in the fi rst seven games of the season, including two players who enrolled in January and participated in spring practice. QB Brandon Connette and RB Josh Snead both enrolled at Duke in January. Connette has completed 6-of-14 passes for 42 yards while rushing for 170 yards and three touchdowns on 40 carries in seven games. Snead has 44 carries for 220 yards and one touchdown in seven games. RB Juwan Thompson and WR Brandon Braxton also have played on offense. Thompson has 16 runs for 46 yards in six games. Braxton has six catches for 76 yards and one touchdown. Two true freshman have played on defense this season with NG Tevin Hood making four tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss in four games. LB Kelby Brown has played in fi ve games with 32 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, one sack, two QB hurries and two fumble recoveries. FIRST COLLEGIATE STARTS FOR 10 PLAYERS A total of 10 players have started for the fi rst time in their career this season. Five earned fi rst starts against Elon, Duke had one new starter in the next four games and two players started for the fi rst time against Miami. Two true freshmen started for the fi rst time against Miami. Quarterback Brandon Connette completed 4-of-6 passes for 30 yards and rushed for a touchdown. Running back Juwan Thompson had one carry for one yard. Tight end Jack Farrell drew his fi rst career start at Maryland. Brandon Braxton started at wide receiver against Army and had a 21-yard touchdown catch for his fi rst collegiate score. Austin Gamble made his fi rst career start at linebacker against Alabama. He had four tackles and one sack in his fi rst game as a starter. Against Wake Foret Sydney Sarmiento started at defensive tackle and made one tackle. On offense, redshirt sophomores QB Sean Renfree and WR Tony Foster started for the fi rst time against Elon along with redshirt freshman tackle Perry Simmons. Renfree threw for 350 yards and two touchdowns in his fi rst career start, Foster did not have a catch and Simmons helped pave the way for the offense racking up 542 yards. Two players earned their fi rst collegiate start on defense against Elon with redshirt sophomore DE Kenny Anunike and redshirt freshman CB Ross Cockrell each seeing their fi rst playing time. Anunike posted one tackle and Cockrell added four stops. FIRST GAME AS A BLUE DEVIL Duke has had 21 players step on the fi eld for the fi rst time in a Duke uniform this season. After 17 made their collegiate debuts against Elon, two more saw the fi eld for the fi rst time at Wake Forest and one more against both Alabama and Maryland. The fi rst time players against Elon were Brandon Braxton, Ross Cockrell, John Coleman, Brandon Connette, Jack Farrell, Joey Finison, Justin Foxx, Corey Gattis, Dave Harding, Tevin Hood, Garett Patterson, Sydney Sarmiento, Perry Simmons, Josh Snead, Taylor Sowell, Juwan Thompson and Anthony Young-Wiseman. 5 Game 8 - Duke vs. - Oct. 30, Offensive Notes DUKE IN THE RED ZONE The Blue Devils are 21-of-23 (.913) in the red zone this season with 12 touchdowns and nine fi eld goals. Duke s red zone conversion percentage of.913 leads the ACC and ranks tied for eighth nationally. Only Duke, Florida State and have conversion percentages of over 90 percent in the ACC. Duke is the only school who has failed to score fewer than three times inside the 20-yard line. Duke was perfect through the fi rst four weeks of the season, converting on all 13 trips inside the 20-yard line. An interception in the second quarter at Maryland ended the streak of 16 successful conversions to start the season. Of the 12 touchdowns scored inside the 20-yard line, six have been passing plays and six have come on rushing attempts. 7 Game 8 - Duke vs. - Oct. 30, DUKE S RUSHING GAME IMPROVED Duke has seen a marked improvement in its running game from a year ago, averaging 54.1 more yards per game and already rushing for 61 more yards in fi ve fewer games than last season. Desmond Scott leads the team in rushing with 350 yards in seven games. He already has 88 more yards than his team-leading total of 262 yards last year. The running back corps has combined for fi ve rushing touchdowns after posting a total of two rushing scores in 12 games in. Duke has seven runs of 20 or more yards after posting just three 20+ carries last year. The Blue Devils stopped the Hurricanes on 4th-and-5 at the Duke 44 in the fi rst quarter, on 4th-and-1 at the Duke 48 in the second quarter, on 4th-and-3 at the Duke 39 in the second quarter and on 4th-and-5 from the Duke 30 in the third period. Entering the game opponents were 6-of-6 on fourth down against the Blue Devils. MARYLAND UNDER 300 YARDS The Blue Devils held Maryland to 294 yards in their meeting on Oct. 2. It was the lowest total allowed by Duke since last season when managed only 196 yards of total offense. The Terps ran for 124 yards and passed for 170 yards against the Blue Devils. It was the second straight week Duke did not give up 200 yards through the air. DUKE HOLDS ARMY TO 85 YARDS PASSING When Duke held Army to 85 passing yards this season, it marked the fi rst time since the 2008 season opener against James Madison that the Blue Devils did not give up at least 100 passing yards. James Madison completed just 4-of-11 passes for 51 yards on Aug. 30, 2008 while Army managed 85 yards on 4-of-6 passing. ON PACE FOR 100 TACKLES At his current pace, senior linebacker Abraham Kromah will fi nish the season with over 100 tackles. He is averaging 10.0 tackles per game projecting to 120 total stops for the year. In Duke history there have been 55 players to record 100 or more tackles in a single season. The last time it happened was two years ago in 2008 when both Michael Tauiliili and Vincent Rey topped the 100 mark. Tauiliili led the ACC with 140 tackles that season while Rey recorded his second straight 100-tackle season with 109 on the year. DOUBLE DIGIT TACKLE GAMES Duke has had fi ve players record 10 or more tackles this season with two of those coming against Army and two against Miami. Kromah has four straight games with 10 or more tackles, including a career-high 15 at Maryland, 13 against Army, 12 versus Miami and 12 at Tech last week. True freshman linebacker Kelby Brown added 10 tackles in the Army game. Redshirt freshman cornerback Ross Cockrell had 10 tackles at Wake Forest.
