The game will be televised by VERSUS with Ron Thulin calling the play-by-play, Kelly Stouffer providing the color commentary and Lewis Johnson reporting from the sideline. The Blue Devils are coming off a victory at Army while defeated UTEP on the road, Last Time Out Duke scored 21 points in the fourth quarter en route to a victory at Army. Senior Leon Wright returned two interceptions (51 and 33 yards) for touchdowns in the fi nal two minutes to clinch the victory. Redshirt freshman Sean Renfree entered the game midway through the third quarter and completed 7-of-8 pass attempts for 106 yards and two touchdowns. His fi rst collegiate pass was a 17-yard touchdown toss to Brett Huffman. Renfree later threw a 31-yard TD pass to Donovan Varner to start the fourth quarter. 3 Game 3 - Duke at - Sept. 19, Offensive Notes Blue Devils Score 35 At Army Duke scored 35 points in a win over Army last Saturday. The Blue Devils are now 4-2 under David Cutcliffe when scoring 30 or more points. Cutcliffe has a career record of 32-8 when his teams score at least 30 points. L, OT 6. at Army (Sept. 12, )...W, Point Fourth Period Thanks to a pair of interception returns for touchdowns by senior cornerback Leon Wright, Duke posted 21 points in the fourth quarter to pull away from Army in its victory. The 21-point outburst marked the most points scored in a period since 2002 when the Blue Devils tallied 21 in the second quarter at Navy. In addition, the Blue Devils fi nished with 28 points in the second half, their most after intermission in a road game since a 28-point effort at Navy in Protecting The Quarterback Through the fi rst two games this season, the Blue Devils offensive line has allowed just two sacks for a loss of eight yards. Duke surrendered one sack to Richmond in the opener and a one-yard sack at Army. Through two weeks, Duke ranks tied for third in the ACC and tied for 26th nationally in sacks allowed. The Blue Devils cut their sack total from 45 in 2007 to 23 last season. ACC Sacks Allowed Duke... 2 Boston College Long Plays The Duke passing attack has produced six plays of 20 or more yards in the fi rst two games of the season. The Blue Devils have two plays over 30 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown pass from Thaddeus Lewis to Johnny Williams against Richmond. The Blue Devils had four plays of at least 20 yards against Richmond and two at Army. Renfree Makes Collegiate Debut Seeing the fi rst game action of his career, redshirt freshman Sean Renfree came off the bench in the third quarter to engineer Duke s second half comefrom-behind victory over Army by completing sevenof-eight (.875) pass attempts for 106 yards and two touchdowns. With his fi rst collegiate pass attempt, the Scottsdale, Ariz., native tossed a 17-yard touchdown strike to Brett Huffman to give the Blue Devils their fi rst lead of the game. After an Army fi eld goal made the score 14-13, Renfree directed a nine-play, 78- yard drive that resulted in a 31-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Varner on the fi rst snap of the fourth quarter. Inside the Numbers... Renfree Throws Two Touchdown Passes On the fi rst two series of his collegiate career, Renfree led Duke to two touchdown drives. He threw touchdown passes of 17 and 31 yards to extend Duke s lead to over Army. The fi rst touchdown drive came midway through the third quarter with the second coming at the start of the fourth quarter. Avoiding The Interception Lewis and s Russell Wilson are the only two starting quarterbacks in the ACC yet to throw an interception in. Lewis, who threw an interception on the Duke s fi nal offensive snap of the season, has thrown 71 passes without a pick to begin the campaign. The Opa-Locka, Fla., native holds the school record for consecutive pass attempts without an interception with 206 and established a new school single-game standard for most pass attempts without an interception with 55 in the season-opening loss to Richmond. This season Duke quarterbacks have thrown 79 passes without an interception, making them one of 21 teams in the country without an interception thrown. Duke Football Game Notes 0 The Blue Devils are one of 21 teams in the country without an interception thrown through the fi rst two weeks of the season. Duke and State are the only two ACC teams yet to throw an intercep tion. 3 Senior cornerback Leon Wright tied the school career record for defensive touchdowns when he returned two interceptions for touchdowns at Army. Coupled with a 24-yard fumble return versus in 2007, he now has three career defensive scores. 4.0 Duke is tied for fi rst in the ACC for the fewest penalties per game. The Blue Devils have committed just eight penalties in two games to rank tied for 12th in the NCAA. 5 After Wright s two interception returns for touchdowns, Duke has tallied fi ve defensive touchdowns in 14 games under head coach David Cutcliffe. The Blue Devils have three interception returns and two fumble returns for scores in the last two seasons. 5 Senior quarterback Thaddeus Lewis is fi ve touchdowns shy of matching Ben Bennett s school record of 55 career touchdown passes. Lewis has thrown 50 career TD passes with 10 or more in his fi rst three seasons as the starting QB and is the active leader in the ACC. 8 The Blue Devils have played eight true freshmen through the fi rst two games this season. Seven players saw playing time against Richmond and August Campbell made his debut at Army Senior linebacker Vincent Rey leads the ACC and ranks tied for eighth nationally with 12.0 tackles per game. He had 14 tackles against Richmond and 10 at Army to give him 10 or more tackles in 14 career games Duke ranks fi fth in the nation in kickoff return yardage defense, allowing only yards per return this season. Opponents have started inside the 20-yard line after four of the Blue Devils nine kickoffs. 21 The 21 points scored in the fourth quarter at Army are the most in a single period by a Duke team since Duke scored 35 points in a win over Army, marking the sixth time in 14 games the Blue Devils have scored 30 or more points under Cutcliffe. Duke is 4-2 under Cutcliffe when scoring at least 30 points. 38 Redshirt senior defensive tackle Vince Oghobaase has started a team-high 38 consecutive games, including all 12 games in each of the past three seasons and the fi rst two games this year. His 38 straight starts rank as the eighth most in the NCAA FBS. 50 Lewis became the second player at Duke and 14th ACC player to throw 50 career touchdown passes, with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Conner Vernon at Army. 84 Wright s 84 interception return yards rank second in the NCAA this season. He is the only player in the country with two interception returns for touchdowns this season. 256 Senior linebacker Vincent Rey has compiled 256 career tackles and is the active leader in the ACC. Rey is one of only four active players in the NCAA FBS to have 100 tackles in each of the past two seasons Sean Renfree recorded a quarterback rating of in his collegiate debut, completing 7-of-8 pass attempts for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Back For Final Season Lewis is now in his fourth season as Duke s starting quarterback and has tallied 7,145 passing yards and 50 passing touchdowns in 37 career games.
