Redshirt sophomore quarterback Sean Renfree completed 30-of-41 passes for 334 yards and one touchdown on the day for his fi fth 300-yard game of the season. True freshman quarterback Brandon Connette set a school record for rushing touchdowns by a freshman with his seventh of the year on a 20-yard run. Senior wide receiver Austin Kelly caught his third touchdown pass of the season on a 37-yard toss from Renfree. Junior safety Matt Daniels caused a fumble and also had a fumble recovery while recording seven tackles. Redshirt senior linebacker Abraham Kromah tallied 13 tackles for his seventh game of the season with 10 or more. BLUE DEVILS ISP SPORTS NETWORK A state-wide radio audience follows all the action of Duke football on The Blue Devils ISP Sports Network. The one-hour tailgate show is hosted by John Roth. Two-time Broadcaster of the Year Bob Harris, the voice of the Blue Devils for the past 34 seasons, calls all the action for Duke fans each game. He was inducted into the Stanly County (N.C.) Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Sports Hall of Fame in Analyst Wes Chesson joins Harris in the booth each game and is in his 31st season providing color commentary for Duke games. 3 Game 12 - Duke vs. - Nov. 20, DUKE VS. NORTH CAROLINA Saturday s game will mark the 97th on the gridiron between the two schools, with holding a all-time series advantage. The fi rst game in the series came on November 27, 1888 with Duke earning a 16-0 victory in Raleigh. The Tar Heels have won six straight and 19 of the past 20 meetings including last year s 19-6 decision in Chapel Hill. BATTLE OF THE BLUES PRESENTED BY CONTINENTAL TIRE The Duke- rivalry series continues this year with a new name and presenting sponsor. The Battle of the Blues presented by Continental Tire is the year-long rivalry series between the two schools, with points awarded in 23 sports of competition. The winner at season end will receive the Continental Tire Cup. UNC leads the -11 series, 4-2, with this week s football game worth two points to the winner. DUKE-NORTH CAROLINA TIES Duke head coach David Cutcliffe and head coach Butch Davis both did not coach during the 2005 season. Cutcliffe was on the staff at Notre Dame in the spring of 2005 but resigned due to health reasons before re-joining the Tennessee staff for 2006 while Davis was in between head coaching positions with the NFL s Cleveland Browns ( ) and (2007-present). Blue Devil associate head coach Ron Middleton and Tar Heel offensive coordinator John Shoop were on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers staff together in Shoop was a graduate assistant coach at Vanderbilt from when the Commodores fell three times to Tennessee with Cutcliffe on the Vol coaching staff. 4 VICTORY BELL The battle for the Victory Bell began in 1948 with earning possession with a 20-0 win in Chapel Hill. Duke head cheerleader Loring Jones and head cheerleader Norman Spear decided on the idea of the Victory Bell. Jones designed the model while Spear obtained a bell from an old railroad train. Red Lewis, Duke s business manager for athletics, agreed to fi nd money in the budget to pay for the bell. 5 Game 12 - Duke vs. - Nov. 27, Team Notes DUKE REACHES CAPACITY IN WALLACE WADE The Blue Devils reached capacity in Wallace Wade Stadium in each of the fi rst two home games with crowds of 33,941 against Elon and 39,042 against Alabama and are averaging an attendance of 329,785 in fi ve home games this year. Duke s crowd of 39,042 against Alabama was the largest since Nov. 19, 1994 when 40,103 fans showed up for a victory over the Blue Devils. Duke added 3,904 seats with temporary bleachers for the game with the Crimson Tide, increasing capacity to 37,845. Before this season, the last time Duke reached capacity for a home game was 2001 when 35,206 fans were in attendance for the Blue Devils loss to N.C. State. The home attendance in a fi ve-game span of 148,924 is the most since 1994 when Duke tallied 164,238 in its fi nal fi ve home games against East Carolina, Army, Clemson, Virginia and. The Blue Devils win over Virginia ranks as the second highest scoring league contest while earlier this year, Duke lost to Wake Forest, 54-48, in the third highest scoring conference game. It was the fi rst time since 1994 that the Blue Devils had 50 or more points in a game with the last time coming against Wake Forest in a victory. It also marked the highest point total ever scored against Virginia in the 62-game series history. The previous high was 51 in a victory at home in Duke has now scored 50 or more points in a game 28 times in school history, including 13 games at home. In the last 55 years, there have only been six games where Duke has tallied 50 or more points. Duke has four games this season with 30 or more. The three games with 40 or more points mark the fi rst time since 1994 and seventh season in school history that Duke has scored at least 40 points in three or more contests. The Blue Devils did it fi ve times in The seasons where Duke has scored 40 or more at least three times include, 1940, 1941, 1943, 1987, 1989, 1994 and. The last time Duke scored 40 or more points in backto-back games was in 1991 when the Blue Devils had 42 against both Rutgers and Colgate in the second and third games of the season. The 89 points combined are the most in a two-game span since Duke had 90 combined points against South Carolina (33) and N.C. State (57) in The 55 points scored against Virginia were the most in head coach David Cutcliffe s three seasons at Duke. QB Brandon Connette and RB Josh Snead both enrolled at Duke in January. Connette has completed 9-of-21 passes for 104 yards and two interceptions while rushing for 305 yards and seven touchdowns on 72 carries in 11 games. Snead has 45 carries for 221 yards and one touchdown in nine games. RB Juwan Thompson and WR Brandon Braxton also have played on offense. Thompson has 23 runs for 76 yards in 10 games. Braxton has 14 catches for 180 yards and one touchdown. Two true freshman have played on defense this season with NG Tevin Hood making four tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss in four games. LB Kelby Brown has played in nine games with 63 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, fi ve QB hurries and four fumble recoveries. Duke Football Game Notes FIRST COLLEGIATE STARTS FOR 14 PLAYERS A total of 14 players have started for the fi rst time in their career this season. Five earned fi rst starts against Elon, Duke had one new starter in each of the next four games, two players started for the fi rst time against Miami and one against Virginia, Boston College and Georgia Tech. After transferring from Santa Rosa Junior College, junior tight end Cooper Helfet started for the fi rst time against Georgia Tech and had six receptions for 92 yards. Redshirt freshman August Campbell drew his fi rst collegiate start at safety against Boston College and had a school record 95-yard fumble return for a touchdown. Against Virginia, redshirt freshman offensive guard Dave Harding earned his fi rst career start at left guard and helped pave the way for 230 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns. Two true freshmen started for the fi rst time against Miami. Quarterback Brandon Connette completed 4-of-6 passes for 30 yards and rushed for a touchdown. Running back Juwan Thompson had one carry for one yard. Tight end Jack Farrell drew his fi rst career start at Maryland. Brandon Braxton started at wide receiver against Army and had a 21-yard touchdown catch for his fi rst collegiate score. Austin Gamble made his fi rst career start at linebacker against Alabama. He had four tackles and one sack in his fi rst game as a starter. Against Wake Foret Sydney Sarmiento started at defensive tackle and made one tackle. On offense, redshirt sophomores QB Sean Renfree and WR Tony Foster started for the fi rst time against Elon along with redshirt freshman tackle Perry Simmons. Renfree threw for 350 yards and two touchdowns in his fi rst career start, Foster did not have a catch and Simmons helped pave the way for the offense racking up 542 yards. Two players earned their fi rst collegiate start on defense against Elon with redshirt sophomore DE Kenny Anunike and redshirt freshman CB Ross Cockrell each seeing their fi rst playing time. Anunike posted one tackle and Cockrell added four stops. FIRST GAME AS A BLUE DEVIL Duke has had 21 players step on the fi eld for the fi rst time in a Duke uniform this season. After 17 made their collegiate debuts against Elon, two more saw the fi eld for the fi rst time at Wake Forest and one more against both Alabama and Maryland. The 391 yards per game is the highest by a Blue Devil squad since 1989 when Duke averaged yards per contest. It ranks as the seventh-highest total since The Blue Devils have posted 400 or more yards in fi ve games this season, including three of the last four outings. Duke had a season-high 542 yards against Elon in the season opener. Duke s passing yards per game is the second highest since Only last year s average of yards per game was higher in the last 17 seasons. It is the eighth-highest average in school history as the Blue Devils have passed for over 300 yards in fi ve contests. The Blue Devils are also averaging rushing yards per game, which is 55.4 more per contest than last season and the most since 2005 when they averaged yards per game. DUKE AMONG ACC LEADERS IN PASSING Duke s passing attack ranks second in the ACC and 24th nationally with an average of yards per game. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Sean Renfree has passed for 300 or more yards in fi ve games this season to give Duke 14 games with 300 or more passing yards under Cutcliffe. ACC Passing Offense 1. N.C. State Duke Virginia Miami OFFENSE COMPILES 542 YARDS Duke tallied 542 yards of total offense against Elon, the highest total since 1998 by a Blue Devils squad. The 1998 team recorded 575 yards of total offense with 303 passing yards and 272 rushing yards against Northwestern. The Elon game marked the second time under Cutcliffe that the Blue Devils have had over 500 yards of total offense. Last season, Duke posted 502 (459 pass, 85 rush) yards against N.C. State in a win. The 192 rushing yards are the third-most under Cutcliffe behind 233 yards on 41 carries last season against N.C. Central and 218 yards on 48 attempts against James Madison in RECORDING 450 YARDS OF TOTAL OFFENSE The Blue Devils have gone over 450 yards ot total offense in four games this season, posting 542 yards against Elon, 487 at Wake Forest, 456 at Navy and 489 versus Virginia. For the season, the Blue Devils rank seventh in the ACC with yards per game. The Blue Devils have passed for over 300 yards in three of the four games with at least 450 yards and had over 200 rushing yards in the other against Virginia. Duke has a combined 14 rushing touchdowns in those four outings. Under Cutcliffe, Duke has topped the 400-yard mark 10 times in 33 games, including twice in 2008 and four times each of the past two seasons. SIX RUSHING TOUCHDOWNS VS. VIRGINIA Duke had six rushing touchdowns against Virginia, marking the fi rst time that the Blue Devils have rushed for six touchdowns in a game since 1968 when they scored six times on the ground in a win over Georgia Tech at home. The six rushing scores were spread out with four different players fi nding the end zone. Duke s two quarterbacks, Brandon Connette and Sean Renfree, each scored twice. Connette had runs of two and 20 yards for his scores while Renfree crossed the goal line on runs of one and 37 yards. Junior wide receiver Donovan Varner scored his fi rst career rushing touchdown from nine yards out and Desmond Scott tallied the game-winner on a 35-yard run with 40 seconds remaining for his third of the season. DUKE POUNDS OUT 230 RUSHING YARDS The 230 rushing yards for the Blue Devils against Virginia marked the third time under Cutcliffe that Duke has rushed for 200 or more yards in a game. The last time they did it was against N.C. Central last season when they racked up 233 rushing yards. They also had over 200 rushing yards against James Madison in 2008, fi nishing the game with 218 yards. Scott led the way with 97 yards on 17 carries, including a 35-yard game-winning touchdown run. Connette and Renfree combined for 100 yards and four touchdowns on 22 attempts in the game. The Blue Devils averaged 5.1 yards per carry in the contest. SCORING IN 14 STRAIGHT QUARTERS Duke scored points in 14 straight quarters, putting points on the board in all four quarters against Navy, Virginia and Boston College and then in each of the fi rst two quarters at Georgia Tech. The streak ended in the third quarter of the loss against the Yellow Jackets. The streak of 14 straight ranks as the fi fth longest in the past 40 seasons of Duke football. The longest streak was 17 straight accomplished in 1990 (fourth quarter of Army through end of Wake Forest game) and (second half of Kansas through third quarter of Maryland). The Blue Devils have found success on third down in the fi rst and fourth quarters this season. 7 Game 12 - Duke vs. - Nov. 27, Duke Football Game Notes LONG CONVERSIONS IN FOURTH QUARTER The Blue Devils have done a good job this season converting fourth downs in the fourth quarter and are 3-of-6 in the fi nal period. Against Virginia, Duke trailed and faced a 4th-and-20 from its own 21-yard line. Renfree stayed in the pocket and found Varner over the middle for a 32-yard gain that helped set up the game-winning 35-yard touchdown run by Scott. The Virginia play was similar to one at Maryland where Duke was behind 21-9 in the fourth quarter and faced a 4th-and-19 from the Maryland 36-yard line. Renfree threw a deep pass to Varner for 35 yards to take Duke to the one-yard line and set up an eventual two-yard touchdown throw from Renfree to Brandon King. SCORING ON FOUR STRAIGHT POSSESSIONS In all three of Duke s victories this season, the Blue Devils have scored on four straight possessions during the game. In the season opener against Elon, Duke came away with points on fi ve of its fi rst six possessions, including four straight to end the fi rst half with two touchdowns and two fi eld goals to lead at the break. At Navy, the Blue Devils opened the game with points on its fi rst four drives and six of its fi rst seven possessions in the game. Duke had a fi eld goal and three touchdowns on four fi rst half drives to lead 24-0 at halftime. Against Virginia, Duke had stretches where the Blue Devils scored on three and four straight possessions. The fi rst three drives all resulted in touchdowns for a 21-7 fi rst quarter lead and then in the second half they scored on fi ve of the last six possessions. After punting on the fi rst drive of the second half, Duke had a touchdown, fi eld goal, two touchdowns, fumble and then the game-winning touchdown drive. 14 Game 12 - Duke vs. - Nov. 27, Duke Football Game Notes Defensive Notes DUKE DEFENDS NAVY OPTION ATTACK Navy entered the Duke game ranked ninth nationally in rushing offense with yards per game but the Blue Devils held the Midshipmen to 148 yards on the ground below their season average. The Blue Devils limited Navy to 41 rushing yards on 19 carries in the fi rst half while building a 24-0 lead. The Midshipmen had just 67 yards of total offense in the fi rst half. Duke was only the second opponent in eight games to hold Navy under 200 rushing yards as Georgia Southern allowed only 109 rushing yards in the second week of the season. FOURTH DOWN STOPS AGAINST MIAMI Duke made four fourth down stops inside their own territory against Miami to help hold the Hurricanes to 28 points. The Blue Devils stopped the Hurricanes on 4th-and-5 at the Duke 44 in the fi rst quarter, on 4th-and-1 at the Duke 48 in the second quarter, on 4th-and-3 at the Duke 39 in the second quarter and on 4th-and-5 from the Duke 30 in the third period. Entering the game opponents were 6-of-6 on fourth down against the Blue Devils. MARYLAND UNDER 300 YARDS The Blue Devils held Maryland to 294 yards in their meeting on Oct. 2. It was the lowest total allowed by Duke since last season when Virginia managed only 196 yards of total offense. The Terps ran for 124 yards and passed for 170 yards against the Blue Devils. It was the second straight week Duke did not give up 200 yards through the air. DUKE HOLDS TWO TEAMS UNDER 100 YARDS When Duke held Army to 85 passing yards this season, it marked the fi rst time since the 2008 season opener against James Madison that the Blue Devils did not give up at least 100 passing yards. James Madison completed just 4-of-11 passes for 51 yards on Aug. 30, 2008 while Army managed 85 yards on 4-of-6 passing. The Blue Devils also limited Georgia Tech to 90 passing yards as the Yellow Jackets were just 2-of-7 passing in the game. RED ZONE TAKEAWAYS In the last two games, Duke has forced three fumbles in the red zone and have stopped opponents on 4-of-8 red zone possessions. Five of Duke s nine fumble recoveries on the season have come when the opponent has been inside the 20-yard line. At Georgia Tech, the Yellow Jackets drove to the 15-yard line where junior safety Matt Daniels caused a fumble and true freshman linebacker Kelby Brown fell on it. Redshirt freshman cornerback Ross Cockrell leads the team with three interceptions, including two against Virginia. EGBOH LEADING PASS RUSHER Redshirt senior defensive end Patrick Egboh has developed into Duke s leading pass rusher with a team-high 2.5 sacks on the season. At Georgia Tech he recorded a career-high two sacks. Entering the game, the Yellow Jackets had only allowed 13 sacks in the fi rst 10 games of the season to rank tied for second fewest in the ACC. All of his sacks have come in the last four weeks as he also had 1.5 sacks at Navy and the team s only sack against Boston College. Egboh now has seven career sacks and is Duke s active leader. EGBOH AMONG TOP TACKLERS ON D-LINE The 59 tackles for Egboh on the year are the second most by any defensive lineman in the ACC. Only Kyle Wilber of Wake Forest has more tackles with 62 in 11 games.
