Duke scored over 40 points for the fourth time under Cutcliffe, including a touchdown on their fi rst offensive possession. The Blue Devils racked up 542 yards of total offense with 350 coming through the air and 192 on the ground. Sean Renfree made his starting debut and completed 31-of-39 pass attempts for 350 yards and two touchdowns. Two wide receivers went over 100 yards on the day with Conner Vernon catching 10 passes for 129 yards and Donovan Varner fi nishing with seven grabs for 123 yards. Three running backs scored touchdowns after the Blue Devils only had two rushing scores from the running back position a year ago. The defense had two interceptions on the day, giving Duke a +2 turnover margin to open the season. Duke also had two sacks on the evening. The one-hour tailgate show is hosted by John Roth. Two-time Broadcaster of the Year Bob Harris, the voice of the Blue Devils for the past 34 seasons, calls all the action for Duke fans each game. He was inducted into the Stanly County (N.C.) Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Sports Hall of Fame in Analyst Wes Chesson joins Harris in the booth each game and is in his 31st season providing color commentary for Duke games. Cutcliffe is now 7-2 as a head coach in games to start the season. DUKE REACHES CAPACITY IN WALLACE WADE For the Elon contest last weekend, the Blue Devils reached capacity in Wallace Wade Stadium with a crowd of 33,941. The last time Duke reached capacity for a home game was 2001 when 35,206 fans were in attendance for the Blue Devils loss to N.C. State. The 1998 team recorded 575 yards of total offense with 303 passing yards and 272 rushing yards. The Elon game marked the second time under Cutcliffe that the Blue Devils have had over 500 yards of total offense. Last season they had 502 (459 pass, 85 rush) against N.C. State in a win. The 350 passing yards against the Phoenix give Duke 300 or more passing yards in 10 games under Cutcliffe. The 192 rushing yards are the third most under Cutcliffe behind 233 yards on 41 carries last season against N.C. Central and 218 yards on 48 attempts against James Madison in DUKE COMMITS ZERO TURNOVERS The Blue Devils were turnover free in the opener while intercepting two passes for a +2 turnover margin. Duke is one of 18 teams in the nation to not commit a single turnover in the fi rst week and ranks tied for seventh nationally in turnover margin. Most of that came in the second half when the Blue Devils held the ball for 20:36 minutes of the 30 possible minutes. In the second half, the Blue Devils had a 16-play drive that covered 58 yards and 5:50 minutes. That drive was followed by back-to-back 11-play drives covering 67 and 36 yards respectively and both resulting in touchdowns. The 67-yard drive took 4:38 minutes while the 36-yard drive took 5:35 minutes. Duke had four drives in the game of 10 or more plays and four drives that took over four minutes. QB Brandon Connette and RB Josh Snead both enrolled at Duke in January and played against Elon. Connette did not attempt a pass but did have a 48-yard run at the end of the game. Snead had seven rushes for 29 yards and one touchdown. Fellow RB Juwan Thompson and WR Brandon Braxton also played on offense. Thompson fi nished with eight carries for 26 yards while Braxton had one reception for three yards. The only true freshman to play on defense was walk-on NG Tevin Hood, who played fi ve snaps on defense. Only Oregon (35) and Texas A&M (33) had more fi rst downs than Duke last week. DUKE QB STARTING DEBUTS Redshirt sophomore Sean Renfree became the 50th quarterback in school history to start in a game for the Blue Devils against Elon. 6 Game 2 - Duke vs. - Sept. 11, SCOTT SCORES FIRST TD OF SEASON Sophomore running back Desmond Scott took his fi fth carry of the game 34 yards for a touchdown on Duke s opening drive of the Elon game. On the fi rst drive, Scott had fi ve rushes for 52 yards. He went on to fi nish the game as the team s leading rusher with 77 yards on 15 carries. His touchdown was the second of his career. He scored once last season against N.C. Central. HOLLINGSWORTH RUSHES FOR SCORE Junior running back Jay Hollingsworth had a oneyard touchdown run for his second career rushing score. He scored a touchdown at in 2008 when he had his top career rushing performance with 67 yards on 15 carries. FRESHMEN RBS MAKE DEBUT True freshmen running backs Josh Snead and Juwan Thompson made their collegiate debuts against Elon and were effective. 7 Game 2 - Duke vs. - Sept. 11, KELLY APPROACHING 1,000 YARDS Senior wide receiver Austin Kelly is only 20 yards away from becoming the 30th player in school history with 1,000 career receiving yards. Kelly had three catches for 27 yards against Elon and now has at least two catches in 13 straight games. VARNER AND VERNON CONVERT 3RD DOWNS In the season opener against Elon, Vernon became a go-to player on third down. DANIELS ENJOYS GOOD START Daniels got off to a good start to the season with six tackles, one interception and one pass breakup. He is the team s active leader in career tackles (111), interceptions (2) and caused fumbles (3). BUTLER LEADS SQUAD IN TACKLES Junior safety Lee Butler fi nished as the team s leading tackler with nine stops against Elon. The nine tackles were the second most in Butler s career (10 last season at Kansas). Butler led the team with fi ve solo stops and also added two pass breakups on the day. YOUNG-WISEMAN FORCES FUMBLE In his first collegiate game, redshirt freshman Anthony Young-Wiseman stripped the ball from Elon s quarterback Scott Riddle, but the ball went out of bounds. It was the fi rst career caused fumble for Young-Wiseman, who missed all of last season recovering from a knee injury he suffered during summer workouts. Young-Wiseman also added three tackles in his playing debut. CAMPBELL PLAYS WELL Redshirt freshman linebacker August Campbell contributed off the bench against Elon with four tackles, two tackles for loss and one sack. Campbell played in just three games last season with two tackles before suffering a shoulder injury. He was granted a hardship waiver from the NCAA and tallied Duke s fi rst sack of the season.
