Introduction: The course provides an introduction to key texts, authors, literary periods, and literary genres (poetry, drama, short story, novel, novella, graphic novel) in the United States from the early colonial period to the present. The course will address representative texts from main periods in American literary history, such as Pre-19th century literature, the American Renaissance, Realism, Modernism, and Post-WWII literature. Literary texts will be read within a cultural, historical and literary framework. The course will focus on key aspects, such as nation-building, identity-building, "manifest destiny," westward and global expansion, and cultural meetings and collisions. Organisation Two double lectures a week Attendance in classes is not compulsory, but strongly recommended in order to place the texts into an interdisciplinary context. Forkunnskapskrav side 1
