The main target groups are Programme students, self-financing Master s degree student (SFM) and Nordic citizens and other international applicants with a permanent or renewable residence permit in Norway International exchange students may also apply to study certain specific individual courses. The programme is conducted entirely in English which is the obligatory study language. 3. Innhold og struktur i studieprogrammet Forklaring 3
Innhold i studieprogrammet This is a 2 year full-time programme comprised of alternating periods of study in Norway and field studies in Norway or another relevant country. The programme, which includes preparatory assignment, covers a broad range of topics within the field of special needs education. The series of courses, field studies and the thesis, are described in more detail in the individual course presentations. A limited number of excursions will be arranged to expose the candidates to the practice of special needs education in different relevant schools and other service institutions. Upon successful completion of the programme the student is awarded the degree of Master of Philosophy in Special Needs Education (M. Phil SNE) by the Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Oslo, Norway, and this gives the holder the right to use the same academic title. Oppbygging av studieprogrammet The M. Phil. SNE is a full-time continuous two-year programme with a defined progression throughout the total study period. The first two semesters comprise a series of courses in Norway, whereas the third semester is a period of fieldwork/data collection in Norway or another relevant country for a shorter period. Students return to The University of Oslo, Blindern campus for the fourth semester courses and the delivery of a thesis. Students receive tutoring and guidance from administrative and academic staff throughout the programme. All courses are mandatory. 4
Organisering av studieprogrammet Each course may be viewed as an independent entity with its own admission requirements, content, internal structure and examination form. However, the content and structure of the courses are shaped to create a continuously on-going holistic learning process, where each course is viewed in connection with the other parts and activities of the Master s Programme. Thus preparation for field studies and the thesis will start from the beginning of the first semester and run throughout the whole programme. Karaktersystem, sensur og vitnemål Karaktersystem Students must have completed and passed all the requirements of the previous semester before they can continue to the next part of the programme. All examinations are conducted in English. Grades are awarded for certain courses on a descending alphabetical scale from A to E for pass grades and F for fail - (A, B, C, D, E and F(ail) and for other courses on a Pass/Fail basis. These grade regulations are in compliance with 6.1 which details the grade system at the University of Oslo in Forskrift om studier og eksamener ved UiO. Vitnemål og Diploma Supplement The award of the degree entitled Master of Philosophy in Special Needs Education (M. Phil. SNE) comprises successful completion of a comprehensive two-year full-time study programme in an international context with a committed interest in special needs education from an inclusive perspective. The candidate will have attained a thorough knowledge of contemporary theory and research methods in special needs education. The candidate will have gained a thorough knowledge of theoretical and practical issues regarding development towards inclusive classes, schools and environments. The candidate will have developed the ability to adapt the learning environment to individual educational needs within an inclusive setting and be able to convey insight into the practical application of principles and methods of special needs education and the habilitation/rehabilitation of persons of all ages, both in the classroom, school and local community. Furthermore, the candidate will also be qualified to implement future development in the field of special needs education. 7.
