1 NO EN Public Health Public health has in recent years gained importance through the World Health Organization s (WHO) strategy "Health for all in 2000." This study provides a comprehensive approach to public health and an emphasis on both health promotion and prevention. PUBLIC HEALTH Page 1 of 8

4 Study plan PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION The program provides knowledge in the significant relationship between physical and mental health, nutrition, physical activity and health. This program focuses on important factors to promote the health of the individual and the prevention of risk factors that can damage health. The program aims to increase health workers' knowledge of public health importance. The relationship between lifestyle factors and public health is central, as well as the importance of social inequalities and cultural differences in the population. The course also focuses on how public health could be integrated in the planning process to ensure coordinated and multidisciplinary prevention and health promotion. The program seeks to provide practical knowledge on how to manage public health care. LEARNING OUTCOMES Knowledge: the candidate will have broad knowledge of key themes and theories within the field. After completing the study, the candidate will be familiar with the research and development in the field and have knowledge of the subject's history, traditions, character and place in society. Skills: the candidate will be able to apply scientific knowledge and relevant results from research and development activities in their daily work. the candidate will be able to locate, assess and refer to information and subject matter, and the ability to analyze textual materials from a wide range of sources. General competence: the candidate will be able to plan and carry out various tasks and projects. the candidate will be able to convey key subject matter as the theories, issues and solutions both in writing, orally and through other appropriate forms of expression. the candidate will also be able to exchange views and experiences with others with a background in the field. FURTHER EDUCATION Public health is an independent program at masters level. SPECIFIC ARRANGEMENTS FOR RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING Admission based on real life and work experience (formal, informal and non-formal prior learning) according to current Norwegian regulations. The Norwegian assessment and grading system uses the letter grades A-F, in which A denotes the best grade and F denotes failed. 6 Subject descriptions (1) Public Health HV301H The course provides a broad introduction to a variety of topics that are important in public health. Among the main topics with is included in this program is: public health (scientific tradition), community planning, physical activity, nutrition, psychosocial factors, work and work environment, and environmental public health. No costs except semester registration fee, syllabus literature and transport cost attending field observations. The program is based on an interdisciplinary understanding of the prerequisites for good health and social development affects the health and welfare. Candidates should acquire through the study list of basic ideological, political and strategic thinking in this area. The students will develop skills and attitudes which together with the candidates' previous education and work experience enable them to participation in planning and implementation of practical public health (health promotion, prevention or rehabilitation) within public, private or voluntary organizations. PREREQUISITIES Admission based on completed lower degree (bachelor, cand. mag or equivalent) from a Norwegian or international institution. Language requirement MODE OF DELIVERY Face-to-face, group work, online lectures and/or field observation. Page 6 of 8

7 TEACHING ACTIVITIES AND METHODS The course will be organized as 4 week with concentrated teaching and group work. Each collection will have a length of four or five days. One must expect group work both during the collection and between collections. Between collections, students can keep in touch with the University of Nordland and another students using the online learning tool, "Fronter", which will be used as a communication channel for messages, teaching notes and other information. The online lectures will take place in "Fronter".
