The evaluations are included in the university s quality assurance system. Assessment methods Written exams, assignments and project work. Examination regulations, assessment and grading: Examination regulations can be found in regulations for studies and exams at University of Nordland (UiN) as well as the special regulations Regulations for examination candidates at UiN. The Norwegian assessment and grading system uses the letter grades A-F, in which A denotes the best grade and F denotes failed. Grades can also be given as: passed / not passed or approved / not approved. Graduation requirements Completion of the 180 ECTS bachelor programme. Costs No special costs except semester registration fee and syllabus literature. Introduction The Bachelor degree programme in organization and management consists of several political and union-related topics, with emphasis on public policy, management, organization and management. This combination provides general knowledge of political processes, policy content and organization, and a specialization in issues of governance and management of organizations. General description and profile of the programme The subject-specific topics in the first year of study consist of political science with public policy, political ideology and organization theory as compulsory subjects. If you choose the other political science courses as the elective courses for the spring semester, you achieve a one-year programme in political science. We also recommend courses in sociology and history. The specialization in issues of governance, organization and management is at 2 nd year level, in which topics of public policy and organization theory, organization and management of welfare policy, leadership and innovation in the public sector, are compulsory subjects. The third year is largely

2 open for elective courses, and we recommend particularly courses from the one-year program in personnel administration and organizational psychology, for those looking for in -depth specialization in the management and administration theme. The combination of organization and management courses on the 2nd and 3rd years, and political science courses on the 1 st year, give this bachelor program a wide and varied academic foundation. These evaluations are included in the university s quality assurance system. This course is an introduction to organisational theory's different themes and concepts. Students gain insight into both classical and contemporary perspectives, and a basic knowledge of how organizations work and how people act within the organization s technological, social, cultural and institutional frameworks. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: Have knowledge of major perspectives in organisational theory Be able to elaborate on key concepts of the field Have knowledge of what influences behaviour in organizations Make comparisons between different organizations Yes General entrance and requirements for admission into higher education Recommended previous knowledge: Lectures two hours a week, and in addition seminars directly after the lectures. 1) Lectures. 2) Seminars based on a set of exercises. The course presents the basic concepts in the study of public policy, and provides a basic introduction to the Norwegian political and administrative management. The structure of political and administrative management at national, regional and local level is described. This course covers the key elements of management systems, such as politics, democracy, parliamentary system, elections and channels of influence, the relationship between politics and administration, and reforms in the public sector. Concepts and descriptions of the political management systems provide the basis for several of the other courses in the bachelor degree programs in political science and organizational studies. The course brings up and discusses key issues and topics such as hypothesis testing, scientific revolutions, explanation types, hermeneutics, methodological issues and rationality. The course also discusses the philosophical basis of ethics and ethical challenges in the social sciences. The course develops the students fundamental knowledge of political processes and forms of government in different countries. The course also enables him/her to conduct comparative analyses. The prerequisite for this is knowledge about comparative analysis, the criteria for a good society, and theories of democracy. The course aims to elaborate the analytical skills of the students with regard to the understanding of political processes, including the design and implementation of policies, and public sector reforms. The course is structured in different sections: The first section develops further the knowledge in organizational theory which the students have acquired through previously accomplished elementary courses in the program (see PO110S). The second targets reforms, problems pertaining to the governance of the increasingly application of devolved or autonomous organizational models, and challenges of democratic governance. In the third section a workshop is organized with a focus on a topic of current interest. Researchers as well as bureaucrats etc. are invited to the seminar to lecture on or comment on the chosen topic. The topic provides the case for a home exam lasting for one week. The course ends with a section focusing on the analysis of selected policy fields.
