Heyerdahl The primary purpose of the Expedition Kon-Tiki is to give support to an ethnological theory of its leader, Thor Heyerdahl, claiming an American origin of the Polynesian race and culture. Mr. Heyerdahl's theory claims that Polynesia has been reached by two independent waves of people, both arriving from America. The primary one arrived. about 00 A.D. from pre-incaic Peru, by way of Easter Island, and the secondary one arrived about 00 A.D. from the coast of British Columbia by way of the Hawaiian group. The latter elements have deep roots in Asia and are affiliated to the Malay tribes. The British Columbia Coast Indians had, like the present Polynesians, developed giant and seaworthy dug-out boats, but as regards to the people of. prehistoric Peru, it has frequently been objected that their open log raft could not have sufficient qualities for crossing the open ocean. Set-up of the Expedition To show the feasibility of a prehistoric transfer from the coast of Peru to inhabitable Polynesian Islands, Mr. Heyerdahl will reconstruct the prehistoric Peruvian log raft of balsa wood, and personally undertake the westward voyage of some,000 miles by the aid of the ocean current, the trade wind, and a crew totaling six men. The raft will measure 0 by feet, and will be navigated by means of a square sail between double masts, paddles, a steering oar, and centerboards, all in agreement with the detailed descripttions left by the early Spanish discoverers. The Expedition intends to undertake exact observations of currents, winds, and drifts, as well as other factors aiding or impeding such a primitive voyage; as, for instance, the possible amount of fish to be caught at sea, the quantities of rain water to be gathered, and the effect of breaking wind waves upon the craft. The Expedition will start at Ilo in southern Peru, which is an ancient place of importance to Heyerdahl's theory and it expects to make its final landfall in the Tuamoto or the Marquesas group, with Tahiti as the final destination

Heyerdahl's academic background was originally zoology, but since his Polynesian researches ten years ago, he has devoted all his efforts to a specific study of Polynesian origins and possible relationship to prehistoric American Indians. He has not beamed his attention on any detailed

The leading Norwegian authority, Dr. Guttorm Gjessing, of the University of Oslo, gives Heyerdahl his full support, and writes: "I have read Mr. Thor Heyerdahl's manuscript, 'Polynesia and America, A Study in Prehistoric Relations' with great interest. The writer puts forward the theory that Polynesia has been settled by some independent waves of peoples coming from the America, and not from Asia as is usually supposed; the settlers coming partly from South America (Peru), partly from North America (Br. Columbia). This theory is certainly rather unorthodox, but is nevertheless fascinating and founded on a very rich and admiringly versatile material, fetched from cultural and physical anthropology, linguistics, folklore, comparative study of religions, etc. The argument is thus very elaborate and is even more convincing as the writer, according to my opinion, clearly shows that the communications between the Polynesian Islands and the Americas, which are indubitable, may as well have followed e westward route as an eastward one, as is usually supposed." You make a good argument for possible contacts between the Northwest Coast and Polynesia, also between Polynesia and the American mainland...." Later:... I think your thesis can be the basis for a very stimulating and worthwhile discussion." The leading Canadian authority, Dr. Marius Barbeau, of the National

The puzzling problems of Polynesia, in the light of your monograph, are well in their way to a solution. I like particularly your

The late Professor Charles Hill-Tout, the local authority on the Northwest Coast Indians concerned, expressed to Vancouver newspapers that he gave full support to Heyerdahl s theory, and was of the opinion that when Heyerdahl have developed his views, science would likely move another step forward

Hvis det blir for store vansker med å opnå de sett som du har lagt til grunn i planen din, må det jo være full anledning til å bygge opp en ny plan på grunnlag av de sett som kan erholdes. Hensikten må være kun en, nemlig: at ekspedisjonen skal få et samband som kan holdexxx de faste kontakter selv under meget vanskelige forhold så vel som å bli

Ved vår ankomst til New York den. jan ble vi gjennom Rørholt gjort oppmerksom på at ekspedisjonens finansielle stilling var meget dårlig. Kort sagt: Kassa var tom. Dertil kom at våre flybilletter hver på over 00 kroner ikke var betalt. Da herr Vetlesen innså vår håpløse stilling, forærte han oss en gave på 00 dollar hver som han presiserte ikke var en støtte til ekspedisjonen, men en hjelp til oss personlig slik at vi ikke skulle ligge noen til byrde. I vår håpløse stilling måtte vi akseptere gaven, men for vår æres skyld kan vi ikke anse dette som annet enn et lån. Rørholt insisterte på at pengene skulle overføres til ekspedisjonens konto. Dette har vi nektet av to grunner:. Fordi det var i mot herr Vetlesens ønske.. fordi det ikke ved ekspedisjonen ble ført noe regnskap. På den annen side presiserer vi at vi vil forstrekke ekspedisjonen med de penger som er uomgjengelig nødvendig for at ikke arbeidet skal stoppe opp. En anmodning fra deg til Rørholt om å få tilsendt 00 dollars er utbetalt av oss. Vi har blitt enige om følgende ordning: Gerd Vold som ekspedisjonens sekretær, har erklært seg villig til å bestyre våre penger og føre detaljert regnskap. Ingen større utbetalinger kan skje uten ved vårt samtykke. Nøkkelord: Communications EXPEDITION KON-TIKI COMMUNICATIONS Communications from the KON-TIKI raft will be maintained by radio. (Sound ranging (SOFAR) may be used for accurate plotting of position) The original and primary object of radio communication is to provide for emergency. Since one of the principal objectives of the Expedition is to make scientific observations, it has been necessary to expand the communication plans and provide means for transmitting back data and observations currently during the voyage. The usual marine communication methods will be severely limited in efficiency by weight and space considerations, so a rather unorthodox solution is proposed mainly to overcome this difficulty and partly to utilize the positive interest of short wave radio amateurs. The following radio communication channels will be provided:. Main channel - on high frequency ( to megacycles).. Channel for communication with aircraft - very high frequency (0 to megacycles).. Normal marine channels for emergency - (Life-boat emergency transmitter). (Reference is made to the General Prospectus (f). C.W. Morse operation can be used on channels and, Modulated transmission on channels and. Key stations in the United States will be used to secure the best service for sending relevant data and reports back. To secure the best coverage for emergency, institutions and amateurs in all countries will be notified of exact frequencies. The American Radio Relay League is giving full cooperation. Radio amateur experience and predictions by the Central Radio

21 0 0 Propagation Laboratory indicate that daily contacts to the United States is well within possibility. One may expect therefore to receive daily reports of weather and other information of interest. Under optimum conditions a good quality voice contact between the raft and the United States will probably be achieved and verbal reports may then be recorded here. The communication plans and equipment is treated separately for each of the three channels in sub-appendices,, and respectively.
