NordMin and the Open Innovation cooperation concept The Norwegian Petroleum adventure - From new beginners to pioneers within 3 decades - Development driven by extensive efforts on R&D and Innovation - Today Norwegian companies are technology are marked leaders on subsea exploration and production Much to learn on how to organize effective and profitable R&D models. The single most important factor has been, and is collaboration in an open innovation environment! (universities R&D institutes industry authoroties) Both nationally and internationally. Difference between closed innovation and open innovation Open innovation needs a different mindset and company culture than traditional or closed innovation. Closed innovation Principles The smart people in our field work for us. To profit from research and development (R&D), we must discover it, develop it and ship it ourselves. If we discover it ourselves, we will get it to market first. The company that gets an innovation to market first will win. If we create the most and the best ideas in the industry, we will win. We should control our innovation process, so that our competitors don't profit from our ideas. Open innovation Principles Not all the smart people work for us. We need to work with smart people inside and outside our company. External R&D can create significant value; internal R&D is needed to claim some portion of that value. We don't have to originate the research to profit from it. Building a better business model is better than getting to market first. If we make the best use of internal and external ideas, we will win. We should profit from others' use of our innovation process, and we should buy others' intellectual property (IP) whenever it advances our own business model. Technology for a better society 5
Innovation and interplay Problems set and solved in the context of application Innovation takes place in networks, through interaction between different actors ; Universities <-> research institutes <-> industry <-> society Technology for a better society 6
Why open innovation? The big societal (global) challenges requires the best teams to interact/work together in an open innovation atmosphere: - Energy Issues - Climate Challenge Issues - Environmental Issues - Food & Life Science - Clean Water - Raw Materials.. Technology for a better society 7
The applicability to the minerals sector the big challenges and leaps: Exploration and exploitation in the high North Enironmetal issues (sea & land deposits, water management, footprint,.) New mining concepts (remote operated/controlled,.) Make more out of less new fragmentation technologies and use of waste materials New down-stream processes e.g. pyro-metallurgy/hydro-metallurgy/el.chem. processes, use of natural gas,. Transportation and logistics solutions +++ NB: There should be a strong focus on increased processing (to products) in the region not only exporting raw materals/concentrates! I.e. considering a longer part of, or the whole value chain! Technology for a better society 8
NordMin (fra NMR-søknaden) A Network of Expertise - called NordMin - is proposed to be established to connect stakeholders of the Nordic mining and mineral sector such as: industry, research, government and regions. The network will develop and showcase an increasingly sustainable Nordic mining and mineral industry with an impact on green growth in the Nordic countries and Europe. The network should work as a platform for existing and future Nordic cooperation in the field and will be shaped in dialogue with the actors. The aim is to develop an increasingly sustainable Nordic mining and mineral industry both with regards to resource efficiency, impact on nature and impact on society. The problems of attracting competent manpower of both gender will also be addressed. Technology for a better society 9

Oppsummering: Vi bør samarbeide i konteksten av 'Åpen Innovasjon' I en Nordisk/High North kontekst knyttet til råvarer/mineralindustri, mange felles utfordringer er relevante for denne samarbeidsformen (de STORE spørsmålene/utfordringene) Nasjonenes komplementaritet og kompetansebase representerer en unik mulighet for videre innovasjon; petroleum industri + metallurgisk industri + gruve/mineral industri Technology for a better society 17
and Punch lines! To the NordMin steering committee (representatives from ministries) - Please make the organization and governance processes effective/dynamic (as less bureaucratic as possible) To the industry - Stand up behind this initiative; it's intended for you, it allows for more long term research, competence building and strengthened innovation and competitiveness - Bring forward your challenges (its is not all about your money ) To the society - Sustainability and environmetal concerns will be paid utmost attention; NordMin will work for developing the good societies in sparsely populated areas (creating interesting jobs for both men and women) Technology for a better society 18
