ENGLISH TEXT Question 1 The figure shows a box with dimensions L x and L y = L z = L, which contains a particle with mass m. One of the walls of the box is a piston that can move, so that L x can vary. The potential is equal to zero inside the box and infinite outside. The energy eigenfunctions of the box can be written on the form ψ nx,n y,n z = A sin n xπx L x sin n yπy L sin n zπz L. If the piston moves slowly, a particle in the state ψ nx,ny,n z will keep its quantum numbers, while the wave function changes form, because L x changes.
Page of 8 a. Find the energy eigenvalue of the state ψ nx,ny,n z, expressed in terms of the quantum numbers n x, n y and n z. Assume that the particle is in the ground state, and show that the force on the piston from the particle is F x = h π. ml 3 x [Hint: If the piston moves an infinitesimal distance dl x, the particle will do an amount of work on the piston, at the expense of the particle energy.] b. Suppose now that the box contains 8 non-interacting spin- 1 particles with mass m, and that this many-particle system is in the ground state of this system, that is, has the lowest possible total energy. What is then the force from the 8 particles on the piston when L x = L? Question A particle with mass m is moving in a one-dimensional potential V (x), and is in a state described by the normalised wave function Ψ b (x, t) = ( ) { mω 1/4 exp mω [ x + 1 π h h b (1 + e iωt ) + i ht ]} bx e iωt, m where b is an arbitrary real parameter with dimension length. a. Show that i h Ψ b t = Ψ b [mω bx e iωt 1 mω b e iωt + 1 hω]. Then calculate Ψ b / x, and show that ˆKΨ b = Ψ b [ 1 mω (x b e iωt ) + 1 hω], where ˆK is the operator corresponding to the kinetic energy. b. Use these results, together with the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, to determine the potential V (x). For a special value of b, the wave function Ψ b (x, t) descibes a stationary state, namely the ground state of the potential V (x). Show this, and state what the special value of b is. Show that the probability density (as a function of x) has a Gaussian form also for all other values of b, and state what the average position x t is as a function of time.
Page 3 of 8 c. From the formula for Ψ b (x, t), you will probably realise that the uncertainty ( x) t is independent of both t and b, and consequently is the same as for the ground state. A simple way to calculate expectation values and uncertainties, for the special type of wave function Ψ b (x, t), is as follows: Show first that Ψ b (x, t) is an eigenfunction of the operator a mω h x + iˆp ( x mω = x + m hω h h mω ), x with the eigenvalue mω be iωt h α. Then use the formulae h x = mω (a + a ) and ˆp x = 1 hmω (a a ) i to calculate the expectation values x t and p x t. [Hint: ψ 1 a ψ dτ = (a ψ 1 ) ψ dτ.] Check the result for p x t using Ehrenfest s theorem. d. Show by similar calculations that the uncertainties x and p x for the state Ψ b (x, t) are time independent, and find x p x. [Hint: You will need the commutator relation aa a a = 1.] Question 3 In this Problem, we consider a system of two spin- 1 particles. We denote the spins of particle 1 and particle by S 1 and S, respectively. If both of the components S 1z and S z of the spins S 1 and S are measured separately, this spin system will be left in one of the following four states: χ + (1)χ + (), χ + (1)χ (), χ (1)χ + () and χ (1)χ (), defined by S iz χ ± (i) = ± 1 h χ ±(i), i = 1,. a. Another possibility is to measure the two observables S and S z, where S = S 1 + S is the sum of the two spins. State what the possible measured values are. After such a measurement of S and S z, one of the possible states of this spin system is given by the normalised state χ = 1 [χ + (1)χ () χ (1)χ + ()]. Show that this is an eigenstate of S and S z, and determine the eigenvalues. [Hint: See the formula sheet.]
Page 4 of 8 b. Suppose that the system is prepared in the state χ given above, by a measurement of S and S z, and suppose that S 1z then is measured. What is the probability to measure 1 S 1z = h, and in which state will the system be left after a measurement with this result? What is the result if one measures S z at the same time as one measures S 1z = 1 h? What is the expectation value S 1z and what is the uncertainty S 1z χ? for the state
Vis at i h Ψ b = Ψ b [mω bx e iωt 1 t mω b e iωt + hω] 1. Bruk så formlene h x = mω (a + a ) og ˆp x = 1 hmω (a a ) i til å beregne forventningsverdiene x t og p x t. [Hint: ψ 1 a ψ dτ = (a ψ 1 ) ψ dτ.] Kontrollér resultatet for p x t vha Ehrenfests teorem.
Page 7 of 8 d. [Hint: Du får bruk for kommutator-relasjonen aa a a = 1.]
