Lectures will be in English, discussions in English and Norwegian Free entrance Web site: http://www.aho.no/ 1 25. september: CUSTOM MADE SUSTAINABILITY Halvor Weider Ellefsen og Mirza Mujezinovic, kuratorer for triennaleutstillingen på AHO En undersøkelse av bærekraft som driver i Norsk etterkrigsarkitektur.
1 September 25th: CUSTOM MADE SUSTAINABILITY Halvor Weider Ellefsen and Mirza Mujezinovic, curators for the AHO exhibition Exploring the agency of sustainability in post-war Norwegian architecture The seminar address post-war Norwegian architecture and how the concept of sustainability can be linked to specific values, theories and debates in Norwegian architecture and urbanism the last 60 years. The point of departure for the seminar is the notion that there have been a tradition of environmental awareness in nordic architecture that can be related to current discussions on sustainability, and that these debates and perspectives have functioned as agents informing both architectural practice and discourses within the teaching institutions. The seminar will present examples of such projects and discussions, and include keynote speakers addressing both historical and contemporary aspects of sustainability as topic in Norwegian architecture. 2 October 2nd: Water Challenges Norway & Vietnam. A North/ South Comparative Study Professor Kelly Shannon, Professor Kelly Shannon, Institute of Urbanism og Landscape. The seminar is followed by an exhibition of works from Kelly Shannon s studio. Challenges and actions as response to climate change
Climate change affects different geographies in dissimilar manners. Upon first sight, Norway and Vietnam would seem to have little in common and little to learn from one another regarding climate change. However, the two share a number of concerns regarding vulnerability of their productive landscapes, human settlement and infrastructure development. Both countries are important in terms of agriculture, fisheries, forestry, hydro-electric power, oil/gas and other resource mining. As well, both countries have a number of cities embedded in sensitive landscapes and dynamic ecologies. It goes without saying that water management (rivers, canals, lakes, groundwater and rainwater treatment, sewage and storm-water management network and other sources of pollution, coastal protection and flood control) needs to play a predominant role in the maintenance between ecological function, urban and natural ecologies and their dynamic economic development. 3 16. oktober: Bærekraftige strukturer Strukturelle diagrammer i rådende bærekraftteori. 3 October 16th: Sustainable structures Professor Tim Anstey, OCCAS, Institute of Form, Theory and History. Structural diagrams in sustainability theory. There is a lurking neo-platonism in sustainability theory. Somehow, the diagram that shows the full complexity of the world often turns out to be based on a circle - or even better on a combination of several circles: Slipped in plan; projected through time. The trinity, highly popular in medieval Christian iconography, lives again in such representations. And the debates themselves share with Christian theology the capacity for the exegesis around concepts defined as unquestionably structural for the church fathers, hell, for us, scarcity.
Med utgangspunkt i hans to store utstillinger ENERGY. Oil and Post-Oil Architecture and Grids (2013) og Re-Cycle. Strategies for Architecture, City and Planet (2012), retter professor Pippo Ciorra, sjefskurator for arkitektur ved MAXXI, Roma, søkelyset på problemstillinger omkring arkitektur, estetikk og bærekraft. 4 October 23th: Sustainability: A Claim for Aesthetics Professor Pippo Ciorra, Chief Curator of Architecture, MAXXI Roma Professor Mari Lending, OCCAS, Institute of Form, Theory and History. A critical, exibitionary view on sustainability through Re-cycling and Energy. Drawing on his two recent shows ENERGY. Oil and Post-Oil Architecture and Grids (2013) and Re-Cycle. Strategies for Architecture, City and Planet (2012), professor Pippo Ciorra, Senior Curator of Architecture, MAXXI Architettura, Rome will address contemporary questions concerning architecture, aesthetics and the sustainability vulgata. Gjester: Alessandra Ponte, University of Montréal, Aileen A. Espiritu, Barentsinstituttet. Professor Janike Kampevold Larsen, Institute of Urbanism and Landscape. Assoc. Professor Peter Hemmersam, Institute of Urbanism and Landscape.
Influence of extended resource extraction in Northern territories. Mobilization in relation to extensive resource extraction and the opening of the Northern Sea Route already influences Northern cities and landscapes. Members of the research project Future North discuss challenges for Subcarctic landscapes and territories, both in Norway, NW Russia, and Canada, looking at both urban development, landscape notions, and experience. Guests: Alessandra Ponte, University of Montréal, Aileen A. Espiritu, Barents Institute. The seminar is connected to the new program in Landscape and Territorial Studies established in Tromsø by The University of Tromsø and The Oslo School of Architecture and Design. 6 6. november: Arkitektur nær null Professor Marius Nygård, Institutt for Arkitektur. 6 November 6th: Architecture near zero Professor Marius Nygård, Institute for Architecture. Knowledge foundation and room for alternatives. In the race towards zero energy and zero emissons the architecture debate has exploded. An emerging agreement among politicians and experts is challenged by architects arguing that the strategies for zero are not robust. They claim that the result may be building damages and poor indoor climate, but are accused of mythbuilding. The seminar will challenge leading debaters to drop enemy caricatures. A common knowledge foundation and alternate architectural strategies are needed near zero. 7 13. november: Smart Mapping - bærekraft i Oslo
7 November 13th: Smart Mapping Oslo Assoc. professor Jonny Aspen/Andrew Morrison, YOUrban, Institute of Urbansim and Landscape Bottom-up mapping of Oslo s green future a workshop In this workshop participants are invited to explore new ways of mapping sustainability through the use of a new digital mapping tool called MAPPA. MAPPA is an iphone app which has been developed by the YOUrban project at AHO for the purpose of cultural mapmaking in urban settings. In the workshop the participants will map signs of progress toward a sustainable Oslo by making use of MAPPA in various areas in Oslo. MAPPA makes for an explorative approach to reading and mapping (annotating) the city by the use of photo, short written texts and #tags. The participants will, in the first part of the workshop, be introduced to cultural mapping, the MAPPA app and the more specific mapping task. Green urban futures are dependent on local involvement and extensive use of new technologies. The workshop will mobilize such issues by engaging local citizens in creative mapmaking of sustainable urban futures by the use new digital tools.
