Programme evaluation The study programme is evaluated annually by students using course evaluation studies and by the programme director. The evaluations are included in the university s quality assurance system. Assessment methods Exams and assessment are linked up to the various sections of the study, and contain requirements concerning compulsory assignments and attendance, preliminary examination, written, oral and practical exam. The assessment is described in more detail under each part in the curriculum. Examination regulations, assessment and grading: Examination regulations can be found in Regulations for studies and exams at University of Nordland (UiN) as well as the special regulations Regulations for examination candidates at UiN under the University Rules and Regulations. The Norwegian assessment and grading system uses the letter grades A-F, in which A denotes the best grade and F denotes failed. Grades can also be given as: passed / not passed or approved / not approved. Graduation requirements The final graduation examination for the study programme is the bachelor assignment. Costs No tuition costs.semester registration fee and syllabus literature. Introduction The aim of this study programme is to educate knowledgeable, critical, creative and productive journalists with a conscious attitude to the media s role in society. Students are to acquire a broad spectre of knowledge in media competence, so they can work as journalists in different types of media such as newspaper, tv, radio and online journalism General description and profile of the programme In this programme the students develop knowledge about journalism at the same time as developing consciousness about the profession and practical skills in

2 journalism. In this way traditional teaching goes hand in hand with practical tasks, coaching and systematic reflection. The teaching is partly for everyone at The Centre for Journalism, partly for various classes and smaller groups. The groups also function as reading-, workshops-, and reflection arenas. The Bachelor in Journalism is a three-year study programme. In the sixth semester students can take a variety of subjects at universities all over the world. Exchange between the Nordic countries is organized within the NORDPLUS-collaboration. Before the student starts to study abroad he/she applies to The Centre for Journalism to gain acceptance, so the subjects can integrated into the bachelor programme in Journalism. We recommend students to study abroad during the sixth semester. Further education The programme qualifies graduates to apply for admission to master degree study programmes. Professional and occupational prospects University in Nordland has since 1987 been educating journalists. Most previous students have chosen to work in the field of journalism in one way or another. Course evaluation: Annual evaluations which are included in the university's quality assurance system Course contents: The goal for this semester course is twofold: 1. The course enables students to be better able to study and get involved in studies. It also lays the foundation for the expertise and skills students should have as students and in relation to their future work. It emphasizes in particular: 1. Communication and reflection skills 2. Writing and presentation skills 2. The course provides a basic introduction to philosophy and the history of science, and to central research themes and teaching at the faculty. 4 Especially recommended elective courses: No Offered as a free-standing course: Yes Prerequisites: Admission occurs based on general study competence (university entrance) or work competence (prior learning) according to current Norwegian regulations. Recommended previous knowledge: Students must be prepared to read some litterature in Norwegian and some in English Mode of delivery: Face-to-face. Learning activities and teaching methods: Teaching methoda and learning activities consist of a mixture of lectures, field trips, student activity, seminars and group work. Selected parts of the curriculum will be discussed in lectures and students are responsible for reviewing the whole curriculum. Students are expected to influence the content of discussions and workshops by contributing with their own suggestions and comments. In addition to compulsory teaching and assignments students follow a longitudinal writing seminar related to the two written tasks in the portfolio examination. Assessment methods and criteria: The assignments must have been completed in order for the student to be permitted to take the exam. Grades are set based on the following: Two papers (portfolio) written related to longitudinal writing seminars.
