1 Masterprogram i geovitenskap prosjekt for søkere høsten 2016 Prosjekttittel: Modeling and inversion of global earthquake data Hovedveileder: Henk Keers Medveileder(e): Lars Ottemöller, Thomas Meier (C.A. Motivation (background): Seismological models of the Earth s mantle and core are derived from three types of data: normal modes, surface waves and body waves. While normal modes are useful to determine large scale features of the Earth s mantle and core and surface waves give detailed information of the upper 100km-300km of the mantle, body waves are used to determine the structure of the Earth in all areas of the mantle and core in relatively high detail. However, one disadvantage of the body wave inversions is that until now they have only been using the travel times of the seismic arrivals (such as P, pp, PcP, PKP, S, ss, etc.) and not the whole waveforms. Hypothesis (scientific problem): The goal of this project is to develop seismic modeling and inversion methods that invert for whole Earth structure using the travel times and the amplitudes and whole waveforms of the body wave arrivals. For practical applications crustal corrections as well as ellipticity corrections are also needed and special attention will be paid to developing and testing these. Test (work): Ray tracing software will be developed that computes the amplitudes and waveforms. This will initially be done for elastic isotropic Earth models with crustal and ellipticity corrections. In a second step this will be extended to also include anisotropic waves and/or ray-born scattering. This project requires considerable Matlab programming skills.

Motivation (background): Seismic inversion, also called Amplitude Versus Offset (AVO) Inversion, is the process of estimating layer quantities from reflector quantities. This process makes it possible to increase the resolution obtained from seismic data and give access to volumes. Layer properties are the main (or solely) seismic information for building the facies model. Therefore such a process is critical for oil and gas industry, both in the exploration phase and in the production phase. Hypothesis (scientific problem): Traditional AVO inversion relies on Aki and Richards (1984) linearization or some of its variations. This inversion simplifies the plane wave reflections through a first order
4 approximation in both the elastic properties and incident angle. This leads to some limitations for its use, which are often encountered in practice. For example the Base Cretaceous Unit (BCU) is a high contrast unit which cannot be properly estimated: not only the small elastic properties perturbation is violated but also the critical angle is reached at relatively short offset. By comparing the data within the Kirchhoff and the Born approximations, it should be possible to estimate another linearization which would not be limited to the short angles and which could lead to iterative solutions. Thus, the inversion can be approximated to a weakly non-linear inverse problem and iterative approaches should be able to improve the results in case of stronger contrasts. Such approaches have been suggested for acoustic case by Lambaré (1991), the elastic case by Alerini (2002) and for the weak TTI case by Shaw and Sen (2004). However proper numerical validations and evaluation of potential gain are still missing. Test (work): In the present project the candidate will first get familiar with both Kirchhoff and Born approximations of simulated seismic wavefields. Based on the comparison of both approximations, previously published results (acoustic case and eventually elastic case) will be verified theoretically. As both approximations rely on different assumptions, a proper strategy for assessing the validity and quality of the linearization will have to be suggested. Finally, a comparison between Aki and Richards linearization and the suggested approach will show the potential of the method. Successful results may lead to publication. 5 Masteropptaket H2016 Masteroppgave i Geovitenskap Petroleum Full waveform inversion in a Bayesian framework Veileder: Morten Jakobsen Medveileder: to be discussed in the PG group Formål (kort beskrivelse av prosjektet, maks. ½ A4 side): Full waveform inversion (FWI) is a comprehensive imaging or inversion method that makes use of all information in the seismic data, including travel times, amplitudes, internal multiples and diffractions. Although the FWI method promises velocity (or elastic property) images of the underground that are sharper and of higher resolution than those in conventional migration velocity analysis and travel time tomography, the FWI method was for many years considered to be of limited practical use, due to its huge computational cost. In recent years, however, faster computers, more efficient inversion methods, and a constantly increasing demand for more detailed information about the subsurface (e.g., in connection with reservoir characterization and monitoring) has made the FWI method more and more appealing (Jakobsen and Ursin, 2015). FWI is normally formulated using a deterministic inversion method; that is, one searchers for a single (best fitting) solution to the inverse problem that satisfies the data within a given tolerance (e.g., Jakobsen and Ursin, 2015). However, there are often multiple models that fits the data with different probabilities, suggesting that the traditional deterministic approach to FWI has some limitations. In this project, the student should develop methods for Bayesian inversion seismic waveform data that provides information about the uncertainty as well as the most likely values of the seismic model parameter changes (see Gouveia and Scales, 1009). The Bayesian approach is formulated in terms of probability density functions, which allows one to incorporate prior information in a natural manner. However, the Bayesian approach is also characterized by a higher computational cost than the deterministic inversion method. Therefore, the student should focus on the use of scattering theoretical methods (e.g., Jakobsen and Ursin, 2015) for reducing the computational cost as well as the use of rock physics models (e.g., Mavko et al., 2009) for specification of the prior distribution. The Bayesian FWI methods should be tested on synthetic data that have been contaminated with various amounts of random noise. Effects of model errors and issues related to the concept of «inverse crime» may also be investigated. References Gouveia, W.P. and John A. 7 Masteropptaket H2016 Masteroppgave i Geovitenskap Petroleum Full waveform inversion in time-lapse mode using scattering theory Veileder: Morten Jakobsen Medveileder: To be discussed in the PG group Formål (kort beskrivelse av prosjektet, maks. ½ A4 side): In order to monitor changes in the fluid saturations, stress and pore fluid pressure in a petroleum reservoir under production, one can compare seismic data corresponding to different time steps. Conventional time-lapse (or 4D) seismics is based on the analysis of changes in the travel times or seismic amplitude versus offset. However, one can potentially obtain more detailed information about production-induced changes in a petroleum reservoir by performing a full waveform inversion of time-lapse seismic data (Jakobsen and Ursin, 2011). The conventional adjoint state approach to full waveform inversion in the 4D as well as 3D case is very expensive computationally. However, by using a scattering theoretical approach, one can focus the inversion on a particular (4D) target of interest, under the assumption that the rest of the model is known (see Jakobsen and Ursin, 2015). The idea of using scattering theory for full waveform inversion method in time-lapse mode is not new (e.g., Muhumuza, 2015), but there are still plenty of room for further development of this promising approach. In this study, the student should study the advantages and disadvantages of using different strategies for inverting time-lapse seismic waveform data. Also, the student should investigate the use of different scattering theoretical methods for reducing the computational cost of a full waveform inversion in time-lapse mode. The inversion methods and codes developed by the student in this project should be tested on synthetic data that have been contaminated with random noise to make the numerical experiments more realistic. 4D repeatability issues and other sources of uncertainty (model errors) should also be investigated. 9 Masteropptaket H16 Master thesis in Earth Science: Applied Geophysics SEISMIC WAVEFORM INVERSION FOR FRACTURE PARAMETERS Main supervisor: Professor Morten Jakobsen Co-supervisor: to be discussed in the PG group Project description A large percentage of the worlds remaining hydrocarbon reserves are associated fractures, either in the context of naturally fractured (carbonate or tight sandstone) reservoirs or unconventional resources like gas shales (Ali and Jakobsen, 2011a). Fractures are also relevant for CO2 sequestration and geothermal energy (Ali and Jakobsen, 2011b). There is also an interesting connection fractures and gas hydrates (Lee and Collett, 2011). Fractures can have a significant effect on seismic wave propagation (e.g., Jakobsen and Hudson, 2003; Pilskog et al., 2015; Jakobsen et al., 2015) and fluid flow (e.g., Jakobsen et al., 2007; Nysæther et al., 2013), suggesting that it may be possible to derive information about fracture parameters related to permeability from seismic data alone (e.g., Ali and Jakobsen, 2011a,b; 2012; Ali et al., 2011) or in combination with production data (e.g., Jakobsen et al., 2007b; Shahraini et al., 2012). Since fractures tend to have a preferred orientation, seismic and hydraulic anisotropy effects are important in this context. Conventionally, seismic data are used to characterize subsurface fractures by performing P-wave amplitude versus offset and azimuth (AVOA) analysis. AVOA analysis is normally based on the assumption that the associated reflector is laterally invariant (Bansal and Sen, 2010). However, the conventional AVOA approach may be inaccurate in the presence of complex geological structures. More accurate results can be obtained if one performs a full waveform inversion that makes use of all the information that are contained in the seismic data, including traveltimes, amplitudes, diffraction and multiple scattering events. The development of methods for FWI in anisotropic media with fractures is a challenging task. However, we have already made significant progress in this direction. In a VISTA project called «waveform inversion for fracture parameter», we have developed a method for ray-born inversion for fracture parameters that can be used in complex media. Also, we have developed a generalized T-matrix approach to seismic modeling in fractured media and related anisotropic systems, including shales (Jakobsen et al., 2003a, 2015). The principal aim of this project is to develop methods for nonlinear seismic waveform inversion in anisotropic media with fractures based on the results we have already obtained in connection with the above VISTA-project and a related PETROMAX2-project. The candidate should give particular attention to the estimation of anisotropic permeability from seismically derived fractured parameters using a consistent stiffness-permeability model that we have derived in a previous project (see Ali et al., 2011).

This project will focus on the sedimentary analysis of quaternary marine terraces preserved for tens of kilometres along the southern margin of the Gulf of Corinth, Greece. A combination of traditional field techniques with terrestrial LIDAR datasets, photogrammetry and satellite-derived high resolution DEMs will be used in order to generate detailed 3D outcrop models that will contribute to a better understanding of the depositional processes controlling the development of shorelines fringing rift highs. Two periods of fieldwork are planned in the Corinth Rift for this project, which will run in parallel to other master projects working on tectonics, sedimentation and geomorphology of the Corinth Rift. The field area is located between the localities of Xylokastro and Corinth, approximately 2 ½ hours drive, west of Athens. During the masters project the student will gain expertise in sedimentological field techniques, modern digital outcrop techniques and reservoir modelling software. As such, the project will provide relevant training for employment in the oil and gas industry or for advanced sedimentological research. 21 Masteroppgave i Geovitenskap (For Fall 2016) Petroleum Geoscience Project title: Forced regressions in rift shoulder derived deltas Medveiledere/co-supervisors: Martin Muravchik Medveiledere/co-supervisors: Rob Gawthorpe and Gijs Henstra Project Description: Progressive footwall uplift and migration of fault activity at the southern margin of the Corinth Rift, Greece, led to the preservation of spectacularly exposed down-stepping coarsegrained deltas. Detailed sedimentary studies and precise mapping of the delta bodies are highly needed in order to better constraint the evolution of the Corinth Rift southern margin. This project will use a combination of photogrammetry and terrestrial LIDAR datasets to characterize the geometry of the delta lobes and quantify variations in their position, grainsize and depositional architecture. A detailed digital outcrop model will be generated and combined with the sedimentological and sequence stratigraphic information to understand the geological processes controlling this type of coarse-grained delta deposits. The field area constitutes a close analogue for rift-shoulder sourced late Jurassic reservoirs developed around major normal fault blocks in the Northern North Sea (e.g. on the Lomre Terrace). Two periods of fieldwork are planned in the Corinth Rift for this project, which will run in parallel to other master projects working on tectonics, sedimentation and geomorphology of the Corinth Rift. The field area is located inland of Xylokastro, approximately 2 ½ hours drive, west of Athens. During the masters project the student will gain expertise in sedimentological field techniques, modern digital outcrop techniques and reservoir modelling software. As such, the project will provide relevant training for employment in the oil and gas industry or for advanced sedimentological research. Motivation (background): Hydrocarbon column height determination is the most significant unknown parameter when hydrocarbon presence in undrilled structures is evaluated. To date, eight MS theses have been started in the PESTOH (PEtroleum and co2 STOrage students of Hermanrud) group in order to understand what controls the positions of hydrocarbon-water contacts at different places on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The work has had a main focus on identification of leaky areas, which relevance to both CO2 storage and hydrocarbon exploration. Hypothesis (scientific problem): The contact positions are controlled by the structural spillpoint, vertical leakage along faults, lateral fault sealing and pinch-out of individual sand bodies. The relative importance of these factors depends primarily of depositional environment and the burial history. Test (work): A set of structures both water- and hydrocarbon bearing will be investigated in order to reveal what factors that control the fluid contact positions. Generic relationships between column heights and their controlling factors will be sought for with a basis in the complete suite of structures.

26 Masterprogram i geovitenskap prosjekt for søkere høsten 2016 Studieretning: Geodynamikk Prosjekttittel: Seismicity in North Greenland Hovedveileder: Mathilde B. Sørensen (GEO) Medveileder(e): Trine Dahl-Jensen (GEUS, DK), Lars Ottemöller (GEO) Prosjektbeskrivelse (norsk og engelsk): The seismicity of North Greenland and its surrounding regions is poorly known, as few stations have been in operation in real time at any time. An analysis can now be done on a collection of stations operated as project stations. The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) operated a series of stations on the north coast of Greenland in These stations did not operate continuously due to lack of power in the winter. In addition, data from other stations in Svalbard, Canada and Greenland can be included. There is thus a large potential to investigate the seismicity in this remote area. During this project, the student will go through the available data to identify events that have been recorded by the stations in the region during the period Events will then be located and magnitudes determined. If possible, focal mechanisms will be determined for the larger events. 27 Masterprogram i geovitenskap prosjekt for søkere høsten 2016 Studieretning: Geodynamikk Prosjekttittel: Seismic risk assessment for Bergen or Oslo Hovedveileder: Mathilde B. Sørensen Medveileder(e): Dominik Lang (NORSAR) Prosjektbeskrivelse (norsk og engelsk): Although Norway is a region of relatively low seismicity, earthquakes with magnitudes up to 6 are possible near several large urban centers, which may cause damage and significant economic losses. The aim of this project will be to evaluate seismic risk in either Bergen or Oslo in terms of expected damage and loss in case of a large earthquake. In seismic risk assessment, the ground motion due to a scenario earthquake is estimated, and the corresponding damage and loss is derived based on inventories of buildings and their vulnerability. Input ground motions will be derived through ground motion simulation for realistic earthquake scenarios in the study area. This will require collecting seismotectonic information for the study area to identify faults with a potential for generating a large event. An important component of the project will be to update the available building inventory database for the study area, and to calibrate it through sample surveys in the field. Two projects can be defined one for Bergen and one for Oslo. Krav for opptak: None, but the student should have some mathematical background and interest. Eksterne data All required data and software is available in the literature or at the department Felt-, lab- og analyse- arbeid: Building inventory sample surveys. Can be performed year-round, though it is recommended to work in summer. Foreslåtte emner i spesialiseringen (60 sp): Seismotektonikk, Teoretisk seismologi, Processering av jordskjelvsdata, seismisk risiko, Computational methods in solid Earth physics Finansiering: A small amount of funding will be required to cover field work, in case Oslo is chosen as study area.

31 Masterprosjekt til materopptaket høst 2016 Masteroppgave i Geovitenskap Studieretning: Seismology (Geodynamics) Prosjekttittel: Imaging of crustal and upper-mantle structure using multiple modes of converted teleseismic waves Veileder: Stéphane Rondenay (UiB) Medveiledere(inkl. tilhørighet): Lars Ottemöller (UiB) Prosjektbeskrivelse : Teleseismic waves converted at discontinuities in elastic properties form the basis of the Receiver Function (RF) imaging technique, which is used by seismologists to investigate the structure of the Earth s crust and upper mantle. Conventional RF imaging studies tend to focus on regional networks of seismic stations and rely on single modes of conversion to generate images. In this project, we will develop methods that can generate images based on multiple modes of conversion, including forward P-to-S and S-to-P, as well as multiply converted modes that reflect off the free-surface. The method will be tested on, and applied to, a new global dataset of converted waves that was produced at UiB as part of project GLImER. The project will involve the development of unix and matlab software to generate and visualize/interpret the multi-mode images. The results of this project will yield new improved constraints on crustal and upper-mantle structure at global scale. Potential candidates should have completed, and mastered the topics taught in, the following courses as part of their bachelor degree: GEOV112, GEOV113, GEOV219, GEOV254, GEOV276, INF109, MAT160, MAT131, MAT212, MAT236 Experience with code writing in matlab, python, and the unix/linux environment is essential. Background: The deglaciation of the inner parts of Storfjorden is fairly well known, whereas there might be local variations in the timing of Late Glacial and Holocene glacier fluctuations in the valleys of the tributary fjords. The valley Gråsteindalen is a tributary valley to the fjord Geirangerfjorden and is situated within the world heritage area of UNESCO. The valley has lateral moraines formed by a glacier in the fjord, as well as moraine systems formed by local cirque glaciers. Scientific problems: How was the course of the deglaciation in Gråsteindalen? Do the marginal moraines have boulders in stable positions that can be dated ( 10 Be exposure dating), and if so, what is the age of the landform? What was the relationship between former cirque glaciers in the drainage area of Gråsteindalen, and the outlet glacier that went out Geirangerfjorden? Can the stratigraphy of Gråsteinmyrane or any of the other peat areas be used as archives of former environmental change in Gråsteindalen? Work: The project includes mapping and sampling in the field, mapping from aerial photos, construction of a Quaternary geological map, handling of field data, and the possibility of sample preparation in the laboratory. Background: The deglaciation of the inner parts of Storfjorden is fairly well known, whereas there might be local variations in the timing of Late Glacial and Holocene glacier fluctuations in the valleys of the tributary fjords. Geiranger, Valldal and Tafjord have marginal moraines located in the valley slopes. The most noticeable ones are assumed to be deposited during the Younger Dryas stadial by valley (outlet) glaciers flowing into the innermost fjords. Scientific problems: How was the course of the deglaciation in these three valleys? Do the marginal moraines have boulders in stable positions that can be dated ( 10 Be exposure dating), and if so, are the marginal moraines of the same age? Are there lateral moraines from several phases of the deglaciation? Can terraces in elevated tributary valleys have been deposited as a result of glacial damming of the main valleys and thereby be used for reconstructing the course of the deglaciation? Work: The project includes mapping and sampling in the field, mapping from aerial photos, construction of a Quaternary geological map, handling of field data, and the possibility of sample preparation in the laboratory. Datainnsamling: 1.
