ECU falls to overall, 7-7 in Conference USA action, snapping a three-game win streak, while the Tigers improve to 9-18, 6-8 in league play. LaCoya Terry s jumper at the 7:21 mark gave the Lady Pirates the 50-49, and a Gabriela Husarova three-pointer increased the ECU lead out to four, A three-pointer by Paris Leonard with 3:53 to play cut the ECU lead down to one, Jasmine Young blocked a Jessica Jackson shot and turned it in to two points, extending the Lady Pirate advantage out to three, 57-54, with 2:16 on the clock. However, another Leonard trey knotted the game at 57 all with 1:55 remaining. Alex Winchell connected on a three-pointer with 33.9 seconds left to take the three point lead, but a Days jumper cut the lead down to one with 19.6 seconds on the clock, making the score After a pair of missed free throws by the Tigers, ECU got the ball back with 6.2 seconds to play. Terry drove through the lane for the game-winning layup, but was called for the offensive charge with less than a second to play. ECU drew the technical foul on the play, allowing Aroha Jennings to go to the line to shoot a pair of free throws. She missed the first and hit the second, giving the Tigers the victory. The first half saw the lead go back and forth between the two teams, with neither team leading by more than four points. ECU shot 37.5 percent from the floor while the Tigers shot 32.4 in the opening half. Jackson led all scorers with 18 points adding nine rebounds. Terry led the Lady Pirates with 14 points and four rebounds while Young chipped in 12 points, a career-high nine rebounds and five assists. Days closed out her ECU home career with her fourth career double-double scoring 10 points and pulling down a career-tying 16 caroms. The Lady Pirates will close out the regular season on the road, as they travel to Houston, Texas this weekend to play the Cougars on Thursday, Feb. Feb. 28 and Rice on Saturday, March 1. The team will then head to Greenville for a few days before taking off for Orlando, Fla. for the Conference USA Championships March 6-9. In her first five years with the Lady Pirate Program, she has not disappointed. Given the task of resurrecting the women s program, she eagerly jumped in immediately and has quickly transformed ECU women s basketball into a championship caliber team. The season saw Baldwin-Tener and her staff continue to build a championship program. Not only did the Lady Pirates enjoy their first winning season since , the team advanced to their fourth straight C-USA Tournament and posted their first tournament win in C-USA history after defeating UAB. The 17 wins in was the most in school history dating back to the season, when the team finished with a 21-8 mark. The season was not without its records as Baldwin-Tener recorded her 50 th career win at on Feb. 10 after the Pirates defeated Memphis, Baldwin-Tener also guided the Pirates to their 500 th school victory with a win over Mississippi Valley State (Dec. 30, 2005). The Pirates also recorded their firstever Conference USA Tournament win defeating ninth-seeded UAB (March 2, 2006). For the fourth consecutive season under Baldwin-Tener, the Pirates finished higher in the regular season standings than predicted by the C-USA preseason poll. In , the Pirates were predicted to finished 12 th and finished tied for sixth. Continuing her player development, she molded freshman Jasmine Young and junior transfer Cherie Mills into all-conference players in just one season. Mills finished her first season ranked among the Conference USA leaders in seven statistical categories, and recorded 32 blocks on the year, the most in a single season by a Pirate since Young, who tallied 153 assists on the year, finished the season ranked 27 th in the nation in assists per game. Under Baldwin-Tener s tutelage, Young became the first Pirate in school history to earn Freshman-of-the-Year honors. In the season, Baldwin-Tener and the Lady Pirates accomplished something that had never been done in history; they won the Conference USA Championship. For the first time in 25 years, the Lady Pirates would be represented in the field of 64 in the NCAA Tournament. Baldwin-Tener also led the Lady Pirates to their first-ever bye in the C-USA Championship, securing a third place regular season finish with a program-best 11 conference wins. The team also enjoyed the fourth longest winning streaks in the country, taking a 10-game win streak into the NCAA Tournament. Another highlight of the season was the 19 wins, the most since the season. Continuing in the player development, both senior Cherie Mills and sophomore Jasmine Young repeated as second-team all-conference players. Young also earned C-USA All-Defensive team and All-Tournament team honors. Breaking onto the scene was another sophomore, LaCoya Terry, who was named C-USA Tournament MVP. A LOOK AT THE LADY PIRATES The Lady Pirates have added six new faces this season, including assistant coach and former Lady Pirate Tali Robich... LADY PIRATES PICKED TO FINISH THIRD After winning the 2007 C-USA Championships, with a record and an 11-6 C-USA record, was picked to finish third by the league s coaches, receiving two top votes...tulane was picked as the preseason favorite while UTEP was chosen second. YEAR SEVEN IN CONFERENCE USA University is in its seventh season as a basketball member of Conference USA... Starting in 2001, the Lady Pirates became eligible to compete for the C-USA Championship after 17 seasons as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association... In the past six seasons, the Lady Pirates have made consecutive appearances in the C-USA Tournament and a year ago finished third in the regular season, their highest ranking since joining the conference... ECU also recorded its first C-USA Championship with its win over Rice in the championship game. LADY PIRATES SIGN FOUR Head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener announced that Jamie Shaw, Ashley Clarke, Chareya Smith and Jean Best have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Lady Pirates beginning in the season... All four signees are from either North or South Carolina... Shaw, a Columbia, S.C. native averaged 19 points and nine assists as a junior... Clarke, a combo guard from Myrtle Beach, S.C. averaged 20 points and six rebounds... Smith is a 6-0 forward who averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds as a junior while Best is a 6-5 center who averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds last season. LaCoya Terry recently moved into 9th place all-time in career assists, passing Robich on her way up the record books. 1,000 POINT CLUB ADDS ONE MORE With her seven points at Virginia Tech, Jasmine Young became the 17th Lady Pirate to surpass the 1,000 mark in points scored... She currently has 1,208 career points in a Lady Pirate uniform in her third season in purple and gold... She is 20 points from passing Justine Allpress for 10th all-time. BRINGING DOWN THE BOARDS Senior Nicole Days etched her name into the record books on Jan. 31 as she pulled down nine rebounds en route to her 500th career rebound. JOINING THE CLUB With her first basket against UCF on Feb. 17, junior LaCoya Terry became the second Lady Pirate to eclipse the 1,000 point mark this season... She currently sits at 1,012 all-time and isthe 18th member of the 1,000 point club. WINNING WHERE IT COUNTS The Lady Pirates are 1-0 this season at the new UCF Arena... If last year proved anything, this could prove to be a good sign... ECU went 1-0 at the Reynolds Center in the regular season, and then improved their record to 4-0 after rolling off three wins en route to the 2007 Conference USA Tournament Championship... The 2008 Championships are being held at the new UCF Arena March 6-9. WILL HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF?? The Lady Pirates will be a marked team come Conference USA season...
