With a win against North Texas, Arkansas State head coach Brian Boyer will tie former ASU women s head coach Jerry Ann Winters with 196 career victories - the most for any women s or men s head basketball coach in ASU history. Tipoff for Wednesday night s Sun Belt Conference West Division matchup is set for 7:05 p.m. at the ASU Convocation Center. All Arkansas State women s basketball games may be heard on KWHF 95.9 FM The Wolf and through the StateZone portion of. THE OPPONENT: North Texas will carry a 5-1 record into Wednesday s contest, a slate that includes a -11 mark against Sun Belt Conference competition. North Texas is 1-13 on the season when playing on the road, 4-6 on the year when playing at The Super Pit in Denton and 0- on a neutral court. The Mean Green have lost seven straight heading into Wednesday s game against ASU. North Texas is led in scoring by senior guard Denetra Kellum, who averages 16.5 points per game, along with 7.8 rebounds. Sophomore forward Jasmine Godbolt is second in scoring at 13.4 points per game and leads the team on the boards, averaging 8.3 rebounds per game. Junior guard Kasondra Foreman has a team-high 89 assists and 36 steals on the year. As a team, the Mean Green are shooting.38 from the field,.78 from behind the three-point line and.60 from the free throw line. THE NORTH TEXAS SERIES: Arkansas State owns an 18-8 advantage in the all-time series with North Texas. The Red Wolves have won the last three matchups with the Mean Green and 13 of the last 15. HURST NAMED SBC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Arkansas State junior guard NeNe Hurst has earned Sun Belt Conference women s basketball Player of the Week honors for her efforts in Arkansas State s road victories against Louisiana-Lafayette and Troy last week, the league announced Monday morning. The Red Wolves defeated ULL Feb. 16 before picking up an overtime victory at Troy Feb. 19. Hurst scored in double figures in both games, including a career-high 8 points in the Red Wolves win at Troy. Against Troy, Hurst s 8 points were the most scored by any ASU player this season, and she also added nine rebounds, a pair of assists and four steals while playing the full 45 minutes. For the week, Hurst averaged 1.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, three assists and.5 steals in ASU s two games. She not only had a good week of scoring, but she had a very good week rebounding and a strong week defensively. It was a good week for us as a team to get two road wins and NeNe was a huge part of both of those wins. She is the Sun Belt Conference leader in steals, averaging.5 per game, and her.7 assists per game rank 14th in the league. Her steals average ranks 77th nationally, and she is ranked in the top 11 at ASU all-time in blocked shots, assists and steals. She is 67 points away from becoming the 19th player in ASU women s basketball history to reach 1,000 points in her career. Against ULL, Lewis knocked down three three-pointers on her way to an 11-point performance in which she also added five rebounds, three assists and three steals. In the Red Wolves overtime win at Troy, Lewis drained seven three pointers and finished with a career-high 1 points against the Trojans. She also added a pair of steals and two blocked shots. BOYER CLIMBING: With the Red Wolves victory over Louisiana-Lafayette Jan. 1, only one other coach in the history of ASU men s or women s basketball has won more games than Arkansas State head coach Brian Boyer. Boyer has climbed to second place on the ASU overall career win chart and now holds a record of record of and needs just one win to move into a first-place ties as the all-time winningest basketball coach in A-State history among both women s and men s coaches. Former women s head coach Jerry Ann Winters leads all coaches with 196 victories, followed Boyer with 195. Former men s coaches John Rauth, Dickey Nutt and Nelson Catalina rank third and fourth with 191, 189 and 188 wins, respectively. Boyer also entered the season ranked fifth all-time in Sun Belt Conference victories with 96. HOT SHOTS: Arkansas State s 83 points in its overtime win at Troy Feb. 19 were the most points put up by the Red Wolves since scoring 87 just over a year ago against ULL. The Red Wolves 50.8 field goal percentage against the Trojans was also a season high. TOPS AMONG GUARDS: Senior guard Jazmine Taylor recorded her 69th career blocked shot Feb. 10 against ULM, moving her into first place as the A-State all-time leader among guards in blocked shots. Taylor now stands at 71 blocks, which ranks at #7 among all players. She is one of only 3 active players in the nation to have reached 1,000 points and triple digits in rebounds and steals. If she reaches triple digits in blocks, she will be just the second player at ASU to reach 1,000 points, 900 rebounds, 100 blocks and 100 steals in their career. Former Red Wolf Adrianne Davie (003-07) is the only other ASU player to accomplish the feat, finishing her career with 1,978 points, 1,147 rebounds, 13 blocks and 109 steals. Davie finished her career as the ASU leader in rebounding and blocked shots and still holds those two records. She also topped the century mark in career assists, finishing with 105. CLAMPING DOWN: Arkansas State s defensive effort in the first half against Denver Feb. 5 led to a new record-low for points scored in a half at the ASU Convocation Center. The Red Wolves held the Pioneers to just 10 points in the first half of ASU s 6-53 victory, bettering the old mark that had been in place for 15 years. The previous low was 11 points, set by ASU against Louisiana Tech in 1996, and the previous low for an opponent was 13 points scored by Texas-Pan American during the 1993 season. 30 FOR SCOTT: Shay Scott notched her 30th career double-double, and 1th of the season by finishing with 15 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and two assists in the Red Wolves 6-53 win over Denver Feb. 5. Scott went to the locker room scoreless at the half, but responded after the break by hitting 7-of-10 shots from the field to help ASU hold off the Pioneers in the second half. Scott s 15 points moved her into the top- 10 on the ASU career scoring chart with 1,33 points, her 11 rebounds gave her an even 900 for her career and her three blocked shots made moved her into the No. spot on the career blocked shots charts with 97. She has since increased her double-double total to 31 and 13 following ASU s win at ULL Feb. 16. Scott s rebounding average of 9.5 per game ranks 40th nationally and her 13 double-doubles are 16th-best in the nation. STEALING THE SHOW: Heading into the final week of regular-season play, Arkansas State is leading the league in steals per game (10.6) and Shay Scott (98) Jazmine Taylor (71) NeNe Hurst (39) turnover margin (+4.3). Junior guard NeNe Hurst is the league-leader in steals, averaging Career Assists Rank.5 per game, with senior guard Jazmine Taylor ranking third at. steals per game and sophomore Jazmine Taylor (84) NeNe Hurst (5) Quinishia McDowell ranking 10th at 1.9 per game. The three guards have helped the Red Career Steals Rank Wolves to a No. 47 ranking nationally in team steals. TOE-ING THE LINE: Arkansas State shot a season-high 77.3 percent from the free throw line in it s 6-59 overtime win at North Texas Jan.. The Red Wolves hit 17-of- shots from the line in the game, including 13-of-15 in the first half that helped ASU erase a 16-point deficit against the Mean Green. FIRST FOR HURST: Junior guard NeNe Hurst recorded her first career double-double to lead the Red Wolves to a 6-59 overtime victory Jan. at North Texas. Hurst finished the game with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and also added four steals, three assists and a blocked shot. SETTING NEW HIGHS: Arkansas State shot a season-high.468 from the floor Jan. 1 in its victory over Louisiana-Lafayette, and the Red Wolves 80 points tied for the most scored in any game this season. Their 80 points were also the most scored in a game that ended in regulation. The Red Wolves also notched 18 steals against the Ragin Cajuns, which was a season-high. 5 competition, Morrill scored a total of 5 points, for an average of 10.4 points per game. She also notched the first double-digit rebound game of her career during the span, pulling down 10 boards against FAU Jan. 8. During the fivegame stretch, she has hit 0-of-3 (.65) shots from the field, 3-of-4 (.740) from beyond the three-point arc and 9-of-13 (.69) from the line. She has also averaged a blocked shot and just under five rebounds per game. STREAK SNAPPED: With their 6-61 victory over FIU Jan. 5 in Miami, the Red Wolves snapped a three-game losing streak to the Golden Panthers dating back to the season. The win was just the second victory for the Red Wolves on the Golden Panthers home court. Arkansas State went into the game with a 1-11 record against FIU in Miami and picked up their first road win in the series since a overtime win during the season, snapping a four-game losing streak at U.S. Century Bank Arena. STRONG AT THE LINE: The Red Wolves performance at the free throw line against FIU Jan. 5 was a big factor in helping ASU snap it s fourgame losing streak at U.S. Century Bank Arena. The Red Wolves knocked down 10-of-13 free throws in the game for a season-high.769 percentage from the stripe. CAREER HIGH FOR MORRILL: Arkansas State freshman forward Jane Morrill hit 9-of-13 shots from the field on her way to a career-high 19 points in the Red Wolves 6-61 victory over FIU Jan. 5, but no shot was bigger than her three-pointer with.5 remaining on the game clock. Morrill took an inbounds pass from junior guard NeNe Hurst and dropped in the game-winning three from the left corner to give the Red Wolves their first win in Miami since the season. She followed that up with her first double-digit rebound performance in ASU s Jan. 8 game at FAU, pulling down a career-best 10 boards against the Owls to go along with three blocked shots. For the week, she averaged 1.5 points on 61.1 percent shooting from the field, 8.5 rebounds and.0 blocked shots per game. DOUBLE DOUBLE-DOUBLES: When Arkansas State s Shay Scott and Quinishia Mc- Dowell notched double-doubles in ASU s 59-4 victory over Stephen F. Austin Dec. 1, it marked the first time this season that two players have recorded a double-double in the same game. Scott finished the night with 1 points and 16 rebounds, while McDowell chalked up 10 points and 11 rebounds. Scott s 1 points against the Ladyjacks were at the time the most scored by an ASU player this season and was also the first 0-point performance this year by an A-State player. Junior guard NeNe Hurst came close to being the third ASU player to record a doubledouble in the SFA game, finishing with 13 points and nine rebounds. CLEANING THE GLASS: Arkansas State pulled down a season-high 51 rebounds in their Dec. 1 win over Stephen F. Austin, topping the mark of 47 set Dec. 5 at Missouri State. The Red Wolves also held SFA to just 33 rebounds in the game, which ties their Nov victory over Georgia Southern as the fewest rebounds given up this season. MORE STRONG PLAY VS. SFA: In addition to the Red Wolves dominance on the boards against Stephen F. Austin, the Red Wolves 4 points surrendered were the second-fewest of the season, as were the 16 field goals given up. Arkansas State held the Ladyjacks to.96 shooting from the floor, which was also the secondlowest percentage of the season for an ASU opponent. STRONG ON THE BOARDS: Arkansas State senior Shay Scott ripped down a career-high 18 rebounds in the Red Wolves game at Missouri State Dec. 5, and has now posted double-digit rebounding numbers in seven of ASU s last 10 games. Scott s efforts on the boards have helped her post seven double-doubles on the season to bring her career total to 5. BREAKING OUT: After leading the Red Wolves at the free throw line a year ago with a.795 shooting percentage, junior guard NeNe Hurst went into the Dec. 5 Missouri State game connecting on just nine of her 4 attempts on the season (.375). Hurst got back to form against the Lady Bears, hitting all seven of her attempts from the line on her way to a season-high 19 points. go along with her 10 points and eight rebounds Nov. 7 against Georgia Southern. In the two games combined, she also totaled six steals, four blocked shots and three assists. She shot.390 from the floor, but hit 50 percent of her shots from behind the three-point arc, connecting on 8-of-16 attempts. Her 19 points against UTA and her 17 against SMU are the two highest point totals for any ASU player in a game this season. BREAKOUT GAME FOR JT: Sophomore guard/forward Jasmine Taylor put forth her best performance as a Red Wolf during ASU s double-overtime loss at SMU Nov. 6. She has flirted with being a post-season all-conference player the past three years and now it appears that she is ready to become that player. She has had the best pre-season of her career and I am confident that this will continue throughout the season." An All-SBC Tournament selection in her freshman season, Scott scored in double figures in games and pulled down double-digit rebounds in eight others to average 1.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per game last year. She notched seven double-doubles on the season to bring her career total to 18 and led ASU with a field goal percentage of.478. She blocked 30 shots on the season, which ranks at No. 8 in ASU history and averaged 3.7 offensive rebounds per game to lead ASU and rank 5th in the SBC. Arkansas-Little Rock s Chastity Reed was named the league s preseason Player of the Year, while Western Kentucky and UALR were picked as the favorites to win the league s East and West Divisions, respectively. I don t see any surprises with the preseason poll, said Boyer. With what UALR and Western Kentucky have coming back, they were easy choices as favorites to win their divisions. I think most coaches were probably not sure which direction to go with us. We graduated two players that had very good senior seasons in Ebonie Jefferson and Lyndsay Schlup, but I think they recognize that we also have a strong group of returning players. Arkansas State's season will get underway Nov. 1 at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islander Tipoff, and the home opener against Arkansas- Pine Bluff is scheduled for Nov. 15. Two exhibition games are also on the schedule The Red Wolves will host Lyon College Nov. 1 and Arkansas Monticello Nov. 9 in preparation for the upcoming season. The Red Wolves return four starters and nine letterwinners for the upcoming season, including two of the three top scorers from the season. Hunt, 6, is currently averaging 13 points, 1 rebounds and three blocked shots per game during her senior season at St. Pius X High School, while shooting just over 57 percent from the floor. Jasmine is a post that is listed 6, but she plays much bigger than that, said Boyer. She plays big and long in the post, which will be a great help for us defensively, and she fits our system because of her versatility. She handles the ball and shoots it well from the perimeter and has the potential to be an impact post player in the Sun Belt Conference. Hunt is the daughter of Julie Hunt and is coached by Fernando Villasana at St. Pius X. She is also a member of the AAU HBA-Texas Blazers and is coached by Herbert LeDee. As a junior at Wagoner High School, Reel averaged 14 points and eight rebounds, while shooting 51 percent from the field. Laura can be one of the most physical post players that we have had during my time here at ASU, said Boyer. She can be a physical presence in the paint both on offense and defense and has very good speed to compliment her strength as well. Reel, 6, is the daughter of Ricky and Hazel Reel and plays AAU basketball for the Oklahoma Mustangs under head coach Ruben Diaz. She is coached at Wagoner by Shartese McHenry. Wharton, 6 1, averaged seven points and five rebounds, while shooting 47 percent from the floor last year at Pike High School. Kienna will bring good size to the forward position for us, said Boyer. She is a face-up forward with a very good shooting touch from the perimeter. Because of her size, I think she will cause some matchup problems with her ability to step to the perimeter and shoot, in addition to taking advantage of post-up opportunities. Wharton is the daughter of Gloria Wharton, plays for Robert Anglea at Pike and plays AAU basketball for the Indy Gym Rats under head coach James Banks. My staff did an outstanding job with this recruiting class, added Boyer. Going into the summer, we had committed to signing three front-line players, and this came during a year where there were very few post prospects in our normal recruiting areas. Our staff had to stretch our recruiting base into different areas of the country, and I could not be happier with this signing class. Jasmine, Laura and Kieanna are each individually talented but more importantly they complement one another very well. Junior guards NeNe Hurst and Meghan Lewis both posted career-high scoring totals to lead four Arkansas State players in double figures. Hurst finished with a game-high 8 points, Lewis knocked down seven three-pointers to finish with 1, while senior Shay Scott and sophomore Quinishia McDowell each added 13. McDowell hit one-of-two free throws with 9 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime after the Red Wolves trailed for most of the second half. A three-pointer from Lewis with seven minutes to play in regulation pulled ASU even for the first time after halftime, knotting the score at Following two more ties, Troy battled back to take a four-point lead at 65-61, but a three-pointer from Hurst and a pair of free throws from senior Jazmine Taylor helped the Red Wolves outscore the Trojans 6- in the final two minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime. The two teams traded buckets to open the extra period before ASU reeled off 14 straight to break a tie and win going away. "It was one of those games where it all came down to heart and toughness," said ASU head coach Brian Boyer. "This was one of those times where our team looked exhausted. We have a few of them that are under the weather, and I couldn't be prouder of this group for the way they found that 'extra something' in the second half. They were able to get tough, force this thing into overtime, and then just cut loose in overtime." HEAD COACH BRIAN BOYER: Through 11 seasons as head coach at Arkansas State University, Brian Boyer s name has become synonymous with success and the women s basketball program. Entering his 1th season as head coach at ASU, Boyer has climbed to second place on the ASU career win chart with a record of and needs just 16 victories to take over first place as the all-time winningest basketball coach in A-State history. Under Boyer s guidance, Arkansas State has reached the Women s National Invitation Tournament four times, including three of the past seven seasons. He led the Red Wolves to the Sun Belt East Division Championship, the program has produced 18 All-Sun Belt Conference players with Boyer at the helm, and Boyer was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year following the and seasons. His 96 career Sun Belt Conference victories rank him fifth all-time in career conference wins. The Red Wolves finished the year at under Boyer, with a 7-11 mark in Sun Belt Conference action. Although Arkansas State did finish under.500 on the year and below the lofty standards that Boyer has maintained during his tenure, the Red Wolves did advance to the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament before falling late to the eventual tournament champions. The Red Wolves posted an overtime victory on the road against Big XII power Kansas State, and that overtime win, coupled with three other extra-period victories during the season, boosted Boyer s overtime record to an impressive 11-1 in the regular season. Boyer directed the Red Wolves to yet another winning season as he wrapped up his first decade as the program s head coach in The Red Wolves finished the season at 16- ence games during the season, and reached the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament for the 13th time in 16 tries. The Red Wolves finished the season with the distinction of being the only Division I program in the country with a winning record that did not have a single player who averaged double figure scoring. Arkansas State posted victories over Brigham Young and Alabama early in the season, earning the win over the Crimson Tide on the road in Tuscaloosa. The Red Wolves finished 007 with a 6-7 record, but went on a tear in the New Year, closing out the season with a 14-5 finish and a run to the semifinals of the SBC Tournament for the fourth consecutive season. Like always, the team was especially tough at home, posting a 13- record at the ASU Convocation Center that included a 9-0 record against Sun Belt Conference opponents. In the season the Red Wolves finished 1-13, advanced to the second round of the WNIT before falling to eventual tournament runner-up Wisconsin, and continued to build on their already-impressive home record with a 14- mark at the ASU Convocation Center. The Red Wolves posted home victories over NCAA Tournament participants Oklahoma State and Louisiana-Lafayette, Southeastern Conference member Alabama, and WNIT participants South Dakota State and Murray State. In all, 14 of the Red Wolves 34 games during the season were against teams that played in the NCAA or WNIT tournaments. The Red Wolves also reached the 10-victory milestone quicker than any other team in ASU history, picking up their 10th win of the season Jan. 3, 007, and their 1-win total equaled the highest in Boyer s eight seasons. Under Boyer s guidance, several individual records fell during the season as well. Seniors Adrianne Davie and Rudy Sims rewrote the Red Wolves record books, with Davie shattering the career blocked shots record with 13 and the career rebounding record with 1,147. Sims set a new mark in career assists with 548, ence Tournament, and Davie earned first-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors for the third straight season. Davie also joined the ASU 1,000-point club, along with Sims and senior Amber Abraham. In the season, ASU put together a program-best 10-game Sun Belt Conference winning streak, part of an 11-game win streak that was the fourth longest in Red Wolves history. The Red Wolves finished the season 1-11 overall and in second place in the Sun Belt East Division at 11-3, giving Boyer his first 0-win season as head coach. The Tribe advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT Tournament, defeating SEC powers Mississippi State and Arkansas along the way. The second round victory over Arkansas was played in front of a Convocation Center record crowd of 10, 89. The team s success earned Boyer his second straight Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year Award. Boyer joined former Red Wolves coach Jerry Ann Winters as the only two ASU women s basketball coaches to win back-to-back coach of the year honors. Davie, Sims and Carter all earned All-Sun Belt honors following the season, marking the first time in Red Wolves history that three players earned all-conference honors in a single season. The season culminated with the program s first-ever regular season conference championship, and a return to the WNIT. The Red Wolves finished overall and 10-4 in league play, earning a share of the Sun Belt East division title as they posted one of the top turnarounds in Division I, picking up seven more wins than the previous season. ASU s 19 victories that season were the most since the season, sparked in part by the best start in ASU women s basketball history a seven game win streak to open the season. The strong start carried over into Sun Belt play as the Red Wolves held the top spot in the East division from start to finish. During the season, the Red Wolves posted a overall record against a schedule that included nine NCAA Tournament teams, and three that participated in the WNIT. A-State advanced to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Confer- years and resulted in a strong finish and a trip to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. In his first season as head coach of the Red Wolves, Boyer led ASU to its first-ever Top 5 national ranking, 18 victories, and a trip to the WNIT Tournament. The Red Wolves 18 victories gave Boyer the most wins by a first-year coach at ASU since Sara Wooley won 19 games in her first season in The Red Wolves opened the season by winning 10 of their first 11 games, including road wins over Southern Miss and nationally ranked ASU Women s Basketball 9

The Red Wolves finished the season at 18-1 overall, ending the year with the program s second straight invitation to the WNIT. Boyer came to ASU in 1995 spending four seasons as an assistant for former head coach Jeff Mittie, who is now the head coach at TCU. A graduate of Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, Mo., with a bachelor's degree in education, Boyer was an assistant coach for the men's program for six seasons, including the last three, which he spent as an assistant with the women's program as well. As an assistant to the men's team, Missouri Western was a NCAA Division II Tournament participant five years (1990, 1991, 199, 1994 and 1995) and won two conference championships. The team made the Sweet 16 in As a women's assistant, Boyer and Missouri Western made two NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Final Four in 1995 and the Elite Eight the previous season. The team went 31-3 in 1995 and made it to the Final Eight of the national tournament. In his four seasons at Arkansas State as an assistant coach, Boyer and the Red Wolves earned a 75-4 mark. The team went with a trip to the Women's NIT. In the process, ASU earned wins over nationally ranked Virginia and Kansas. The Red Wolves won 0 games in back-to-back seasons in the and seasons. The 1997 team opened the season with a victory over nationally ranked Illinois and had a 1- game winning streak during the season, the second longest in school history. The 1998 squad knocked off nationally ranked Western Kentucky at the Convocation Center and came within four points of scoring an upset over national power Louisiana Tech at home as well.
