All ASU games may be heard on KWHF 95.9 FM The Wolf and through the StateZone portion of. THE TEAMS: Arkansas State returns to the Convo with an overall record of 9-14, including a 4-8 mark in Sun Belt Conference action. In their last outing, the Red Wolves were defeated Feb. 6 at New Orleans. Louisiana-Monroe will take the court at 9-14 on the season on the season as well, with a 3-10 record in league action. In their most recent action, the Warhawks lost at Western Kentucky Feb. 3. THE ULM SERIES: Arkansas State leads the all-time series and has won 12 of the last 13 games in the series, including the last three. Arkansas State won both of the meetings between the two teams last year, defeating the Warhawks in Jonesboro before earning a win in Monroe later in the season. The Warhawks one victory in the last 12 games came during the season in Monroe, when ULM handed ASU a defeat in the first of two meetings between the two teams. THE COACHES: Arkansas State head coach Brian Boyer is in his 11th season at the helm of the Red Wolves program. Boyer holds a career record of and has directed the Red Wolves to the Women s National Invitation Tournament four times, including three of the past six years. Boyer is assisted by Tanya Ray, Rebecca Peoples and Jennifer Sullivan. Mona Martin is currently in her 15th season as head coach at Louisiana-Monroe and holds a career-record of JEFFERSON NAMED SBC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Arkansas State senior guard Ebonie Jefferson (Laurel, Miss.) was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week for her performance in the Red Wolves two victories last week, the league office announced Monday, Feb. 1. Jefferson posted her second double-double of the season and the third of her career when she scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the Red Wolves victory over Louisiana-Lafayette Jan. 27. For the week, Jefferson connected on an impressive 16-of-31 (.516) shots from the floor, grabbed 17 rebounds, seven of which were on the offensive end, and added four steals and three assists. "Ebonie is very deserving of this recognition, said ASU head coach Brian Boyer. I thought she played extremely well this week in all aspects of the game. She scored, she rebounded the ball extremely well, her defense was outstanding and she made good decisions with the ball." A preseason All-Sun Belt third-team selection, Jefferson leads the Red Wolves in scoring this season, averaging 15.6 points per game to rank third in the Sun Belt Conference. She also leads the team with an average of 2.5 steals per game which ranks fourth in the league, and her 6.1 rebounds per game average ranks 17th overall in the Sun Belt. Jefferson has scored in double figures in 17 of the Red Wolves 21 games this season, including five games with 20 or more points. She scored a career-high 27 points Nov. 27 against Missouri State and has led Arkansas State in scoring in 14 of the Red Wolves games. With 963 career points to her credit, Jefferson needs just 37 points to reach the 1,000-point milestone and become the 18th ASU player to do so. RAISING THE BAR: Junior Shay Scott blocked a career-high four shots during Arkansas State s loss at New Orleans Feb. 6. Scott also tied her career-high in minutes played when she logged 35 against the Privateers...freshman Jasmine Taylor scored a career-high eight points against the Privateers while playing a career-high 18 minutes. Taylor also drained a careerbest two three-pointers. BREAKING A TREND: With their victory at North Texas Jan. 16, the Red Wolves picked up their first victory of the season in which an opponent won the battle on the boards. Heading into the game, the Red Wolves were 0-9 on the season when being out-rebounded by their opponent. North Texas out-rebounded Arkansas State in the game, but ASU came out on top WORKING OVERTIME: With their overtime victory over UT-Arlington Dec. 15, Arkansas State improved to 11-0 during the regular season in overtime games under head coach Brian Boyer. Seven of those games have been played on the road, including this year s victory at Kansas State and the Red Wolves win at Northern Arizona. Arkansas State s three overtime victories this season are the most ever in a single season for ASU. The Red Wolves played three overtimes in three previous seasons ( , and ) but finished 2-1 in those games each year. Arkansas State has never played four overtime games in a single season. In all overtime games played under Boyer, the Red Wolves stand at 11-2, falling to New Mexico State in double overtime in the 2004 Sun Belt Conference Tournament and to New Orleans in the 2002 SBC Tournament. DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR SCHLUP Senior forward Lyndsay Schlup recorded the her second double-double of the season and third of her career when she pulled down 10 rebounds and scored 11 points against FAU Jan. 23 in Boca Raton. Schlup also recorded a double-double earlier this season with 16 points and 10 rebounds against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Schlup continues to lead ASU on the boards this season with a 7.9 rebounds per-game average, and her 10 rebounds against FAU gave her six doubledigit rebound games on the season. EB ON A ROLL: After scoring seven points in ASU s season opener at Creighton, senior guard Ebonie Jefferson has scored in double figures in all but four of ASU s games since, including double-doubles in the Red Wolves wins over Northern Arizona and ULL. Jefferson has been ASU s leading scorer in 15 of ASU s 23 games this season and has five of the top eight individual scoring performances of the year for the Red Wolves. One week after earning alltournament honors at the Nov Seton Hall Classic, Jefferson scored a career-high 27 points against Missouri State Nov. 27 to help her average a team-best 21.7 points in ASU s three games during the week of Nov Jefferson opened her week with a 20-point performance against Louisiana Tech, added 27 against Missouri State and finished the week with 18 at Saint Louis. For the week, Jefferson shot 50% from the field (21-42),.821 from the line (23-28) and averaged 5.7 rebounds per game. She also added six steals, six assists and a blocked shot. In Arkansas State s only game the following week, Jefferson scored a game-high 23 points and completed her second career double-double with 11 rebounds in ASU s overtime victory at Northern Arizona Dec. 5. She hit 9-of-14 shots from the field against the Lumberjacks, five-of-7 from the line and added three steals in the game. Jefferson is closing in on the 1,000-point mark for her career as well. 5 ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS: Senior Ebonie Jefferson was named to the alltournament team at the Anaconda Sports & The Rock Seton Hall Classic last weekend following her performance in ASU s two games. Jefferson scored in double figures in both of ASU s games, finishing with 11 points against Virginia Commonwealth in the Red Wolves opening game before repeating the effort in Saturday s consolation game against Seton Hall. Jefferson also had five steals and eight rebounds in the two-game classic. Jefferson was joined on the team by Kandice Green of Seton Hall, Corin Adams and Erin Hawkins of Morgan State and La Tavia Rorie and D Andra Moss of VCU, with Moss earning MVP honors. SCHLUP SHINES: Senior forward Lyndsay Schlup was outstanding on the boards for Arkansas State during the week of Nov Schlup opened the week with a 6-rebound performance against Louisiana Tech, cleaned the glass for 13 rebounds against Missouri State, then topped that figure with 15 more against Saint Louis. For the week, Schlup averaged 11.3 rebounds per game and added four blocked shots and four steals. She currently leads the Red Wolves on the boards, averaging 8.4 rebounds per game and has five double-digit rebounding games this season. DOUBLE-DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Senior guard Ebonie Jefferson (23 points, 11 rebounds) and junior forward Shay Scott (16 points, 10 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles in ASU s overtime win at Northern Arizona Dec. 5, marking the second time this season that two ASU players have posted a double-double in the same game. Senior forward Lyndsay Schlup and junior forward Shay Scott both recorded doubledoubles against Arkansas-Pine Bluff Nov. 18 to mark the Red Wolves first game with two double-doubles since Scott and senior guard Ebonie Jefferson each doubled-up against North Texas during the season. Schlup finished the UAPB game with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Scott scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Jefferson and Schlup s double-doubles were the second of their careers while Scott has now piled up 15 double-doubles. HOT SHOOTING: Although the Red Wolves came up on the short end of a score, Arkansas State made a season-high seven 3- pointers at Saint Louis Nov. 30 and shot a season-high.467 (7-15) from behind the arc. Additionally, the Red Wolves committed a season-low 14 turnovers against the Billikens. SBC HONORS: Arkansas State senior Ebonie Jefferson (Laurel, Miss.) has been named preseason third-team All-Sun Belt Conference, and the Red Wolves are picked third in the Sun Belt West Division preseason poll as voted on by the league s 13 head coaches, the conference office announced Oct. 20. "I expect Ebonie to play at an all-conference level this season, said ASU head coach Brian Boyer. I can't imagine that there is a tougher competitor or a harder worker in the league. I am so proud of how far Ebonie has come during her career, and I look forward to her continued improvement this season." Jefferson scored in double figures in 14 of ASU s last 17 games a year ago, had 19 double-figure games on the season and led ASU in scoring with an 11.8 points-per-game average, a figure that climbed to 13.0 pointsper-game in Sun Belt Conference play. The Red Wolves return three of their top four scorers and four of the top five rebounders from last year s team that finished LAST TIME OUT: NEW ORLEANS, La. (2/6/10) Trailing by 15 points with 16 minutes to play, the Arkansas State Red Wolves (9-14, 4-8) cut New Orleans lead to five points at with 11:44 remaining, but ASU could not complete the comeback and fell to the Privateers Saturday afternoon at Lakefront Arena. New Orleans (9-15, 3-10) led when guard Rachele Monroe hit from three-point range at the 16-minute mark, but the Red Wolves went on a 12-2 run over the next 4:16 to pull within five at Senior guard Ebonie Jefferson, who led the Red Wolves with 17 points, scored four straight to spark the run. Junior forward Shay Scott knocked down a pair of free throws with 14:16 remaining to trim the UNO lead to 45-36, then fed sophomore guard Meghan Lewis for a layup following a New Orleans miss to cut the Privateers lead to seven at New Orleans answered with a pair of free throws from guard Brittany Helm to push the Privateers lead back to nine before ASU sophomore guard NeNe Hurst hit back-toback jumpers to make it a five-point game. Following a timeout, UNO outscored the Red Wolves 13-3 in just under six minutes to push the Privateers lead back to 15 at with 5:54 remaining, and ASU did not get within single digits the rest of the way. I thought the second half was much better, said ASU head coach Brian Boyer. We kept them off the boards and took care of the ball but the damage was already done. We just seemed to miss easy shots, added Boyer. Especially early, we got the shots we wanted and we were getting the ball inside, we just didn t finish. It s disappointing because we got pretty good shots, they just didn t go in. New Orleans shot 50 percent from the field and outrebounded the Red Wolves 22-9 in the first 20 minutes to take a lead into the locker room at the halftime break. After giving up 10 offensive rebounds in the first half, Arkansas State kept UNO off of the offensive glass in the second half, limiting the Privateers to just two offensive boards, but New Orleans hit 10-of-21 shots from the field and 10-of-13 from the line to help hold off the Red Wolves. Arkansas State shot 36.4 percent on the afternoon from the field and 65 percent (13-20) from the free throw line. In addition to Jefferson s 17 points, Arkansas State also got seven points and seven rebounds from Scott, nine from Hurst, eight from freshman Jasmine Taylor and seven from Lewis. UNO guard Nicole Holmes led all scorers with 20 points, and Helm added 17 for the Privateers. ASU IN SEASON OPENERS: The Red Wolves are all-time in season openers, with a record of 7-14 when opening the season on the road. Under head coach Brian Boyer, the Red Wolves are 6-5 in seasonopeners, including a 3-5 record when opening on the road. INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP: In an effort to help acclimate Arkansas State s international students to life in the United States, the ASU women s basketball program began a partnership with the university s international community by holding a basketball clinic Sunday evening at the ASU Convocation Center. Over 80 international students were on hand as the team members and coaching staff introduced themselves and introduced the students to Red Wolves women s basketball. The students joined the team on the court for drills and fundamental instruction, then enjoyed a pizza party to wrap up the night s activities. This is a semester-long project that got underway with the clinic last night, said ASU head coach Brian Boyer. We wanted to let our international students know how much we appreciate them and to encourage them to be more involved with all of the activities on campus. We also wanted to increase their awareness of athletics here at Arkansas State, introduce them to the Convocation Center and allow them to get to know our team. Arkansas State s players will partner with an international student throughout the semester, meeting with the student for at least an hour each week to help them become familiar with Arkansas State and ease their transition to life in the United States. The women s basketball team will salute ASU s international students at the Nov. 18 home opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Next week s game has been designated as International Students Night at the Convocation Center. RED WOLVES ADD MORRILL: JONESBORO, Ark. (11/11/09) Arkansas State head coach Brian Boyer announced Wednesday that Scott City, Mo. standout Jane Morrill has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her basketball career at Arkansas State University. A 6 1 forward, Morrill is on pace to top the 1,000-point mark in her career at Notre Dame High School in Cape Girardeau, Mo. and averages 15.7 points and nine rebounds per game. She is a two-time All-Conference, All-District and All-Regional selection, earning conference MVP honors following her sophomore year with the Bulldogs. She has blocked 151 shots over the past two seasons at Notre Dame and is expected to finish her career as the school s all-time leader. From day one, Jane was our number one recruit, and we were so excited when she committed to us, said Boyer. She is going to be an impact front-line player at this level. She is not only a very good scorer, but she is a very versatile post player. She understands the game and passes it very well for a player her size. In addition to her skills on the basketball court, Morrill is a two-time All-State softball player at Notre Dame, also earning All- Conference, All-District and All-Regional honors along the way. She is the daughter of Alan and Carla Morrill. Jane is the total package, said Notre Dame head coach Renee Peters. She has size, shooting ability, passing ability, shot blocking ability and rebounding ability. She knows the game so well. She can see the game set up and know how to thread the needle with passes. She is also an excellent perimeter shooter and ball handler. You are not going to see many girls her size take the ball behind their back when they take someone one-on-one. But she isn t someone who worries about cushioning stats and making herself look better; she wants to win and however that falls in place is fine with her. 7 (11/11/09) Arkansas State head coach Brian Boyer announced Wednesday that Hanna Qedan, a 5 11 guard from Farmington, Ark., has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Red Wolves lineup for the season. Hanna can really shoot the ball, said Boyer. To go along with that, she has very good size for a guard, so she is able to get a shot off on a lot of people. But the thing that really stands out about her is her explosiveness. She handles the ball just as well left or right, so she is more than just a shooter, she is a very good all-around guard. The Farmington High School standout averages 19.4 points per game, 11.0 rebounds per game and four blocks per game. She has 19 double-doubles so far in her career and owns a 32-point career-high game. She was named All-Conference and an AAO Top 25 Camp nominee. She was selected to the All-Northwest Arkansas team, the All- County team, the KURM Dream Team and was a Top 10 All-American Camp participant. Hanna is a tenacious player on both ends of the floor, said Farmington head coach Brad Johnson. She is a big guard who has a great face-up game. She can shoot it from outside, but probably her biggest asset is her explosiveness to the basket. She gets to the basket quickly with either hand and she is big enough and physical enough that she can take it down low and post up. She is a very versatile player and knowing the offensive sets that Coach Boyer runs at ASU, she is tailor-made for them offensively. She is the daughter of Bashar and Jeri Qedan. a great offensive rebounder. It is unfortunate that she didn t get to play last year due to a knee injury, but her best basketball is ahead of her and we have all the confidence that she is going to be a great player for us. I think Arkansas State is getting a young lady with a lot of athleticism who has a lot of upside to her game, said Millington head coach Stan Gatlin. She has great rebounding ability, jumping ability and great defensive intensity. MADDOX SIGNS WITH ASU: JONESBORO, Ark. (11/11/09) Arkansas State head coach Brian Boyer announced Wednesday that Millington (Tenn.) Central guard/forward Olivia Maddox has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her basketball career at ASU. Maddox, 5 11, was a Class 3-A All-State Tournament selection following her sophomore year in which she averaged 8.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game and helped lead Millington to a state runner-up finish. She was also named Memphis Best of Preps and earned All-District honors following the season. Olivia has been a part of one of the most successful programs in the Memphis area, said Boyer. In addition to being on a very successful team, they are very well balanced in terms of scoring. She is a great athlete who really fits our system well and is someone that our fans will enjoy watching over the next four years. 8 Head Coach Brian Boyer Through 10 seasons as head coach at Arkansas State University, Brian Boyer s name has become synonymous with success and the women s basketball program. Entering his 11th season as head coach at ASU, Boyer has climbed to second place on the ASU career win chart with a record of Under Boyer s guidance, Arkansas State has reached the Women s National Invitation Tournament four times, including three of the past six seasons. He led the Red Wolves to the Sun Belt East Division Championship, the program has produced 17 All- Sun Belt Conference players with Boyer at the helm and Boyer was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year following the , and seasons. His 89 career Sun Belt Conference victories heading into the season rank him fourth all-time in career conference wins. Boyer directed the Red Wolves to yet another winning season as he wrapped up his first decade as the program s head coach in The Red Wolves finished the season at 16-14, posting victories over post-season participants Creighton and Arkansas-Little Rock along the way. Although the season was expected by many to be a rebuilding year, Boyer put forth what was arguably one of his finest coaching performances, molding a group of unheralded players into a team that produced yet another 20-win season at Arkansas State. Faced with the task of replacing three 1,000- point scorers, including the program s all time leading shot blocker and rebounder, along with the all-time assists leader, Boyer directed Arkansas State to a record. ASU won a record 13 conference games during the season, and reached the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament for the 13th time in 16 tries. The Red Wolves finished the season with the distinction of being the only Division I program in the country with a winning record that did not have a single player who averaged double figure scoring. Arkansas State posted victories over Brigham Young and Alabama early in the season, earning the win over the Crimson Tide on the road in Tuscaloosa. The Red Wolves finished 2007 with a 6-7 record, but went on a tear in the new year, closing out the season with a 14-5 finish and a run to the semifinals of the SBC Tournament for the fourth consecutive season. Like always, the team was especially tough at home, posting a 13-2 record at the ASU Convocation Center that included a 9-0 record against Sun Belt Conference opponents. In the season the Red Wolves finished 21-13, advanced to the second round of the WNIT before falling to eventual tournament runner-up Wisconsin, and continued to build on their already-impressive home record with a 14-2 mark at the ASU Convocation Center. The Red Wolves posted home victories over NCAA Tournament participants Oklahoma State and Louisiana-Lafayette, Southeastern Conference member Alabama and WNIT participants South Dakota State and Murray State. In all, 14 of the Red Wolves 34 games during the season were against teams that played in the NCAA or WNIT tournaments. The Red Wolves also reached the 10-victory milestone quicker than any other team in ASU history, picking up their 10th win of the season Jan. 3, 2007, and their 21-win total equaled the highest in Boyer s eight seasons. Under Boyer s guidance, several individual records fell during the season as well. Seniors Adrianne Davie and Rudy Sims rewrote the Red Wolves record books, with Davie shattering the career blocked shots record with 132 and the career rebounding record with 1,147. Sims set a new mark in career assists with 548 and became the first ASU player in over a decade to record a triple-double when she scored 14 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and handed out 10 assists in a overtime victory at Louisiana-Lafayette. Davie was named All-Sun Belt Conference for the fourth straight season, while Sims earned the honor for the third straight year. Senior Ali Carter became the 16th member of the career 1,000-point club. During the season, the Red Wolves posted a overall record against a schedule that included nine NCAA Tournament teams, and three that participated in the WNIT. A-State advanced to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, and Davie earned first-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors for the third straight season. Davie also joined the ASU 1,000-point club, along with Sims and senior Amber Abraham. In the season, ASU put together a program-best 10- game Sun Belt Conference winning streak, part of an 11-game win streak that was the fourth longest in Red Wolves history. The Red Wolves finished the season overall and in second place in the Sun Belt East Division at 11-3, giving Boyer his first 20-win season as head coach. Arkansas State advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT Tournament, defeating SEC powers Mississippi State and Arkansas along the way. The second round victory over Arkansas was played in front of a Convocation Center record crowd of 10, 892. The team s success earned Boyer his second straight Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year Award. Boyer joined former Red Wolves coach Jerry Ann Winters as the only two ASU women s basketball coaches to win back-to-back coach of the year honors. Davie, Sims and Carter all earned All-Sun Belt honors following the season, marking the first time in Red Wolves history that three players earned all-conference honors in a single season. The season capped a pair of rebuilding years and resulted in a strong finish and a trip to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. In his first season as head coach of the Red Wolves, Boyer led ASU to its first-ever Top 25 national ranking, 18 victories and a trip to the WNIT Tournament. The Red Wolves 18 victories gave Boyer the most wins by a first-year coach at ASU since Sara Wooley won 19 games in her first season in The Red Wolves opened the season by winning 10 of their first 11 games, including road wins over Southern Miss and nationally ranked Kansas, giving ASU a No. 25 ranking in the Associated Press poll the following week. The Red Wolves finished the season at overall, ending the year with the program s second straight invitation to the WNIT. Boyer came to ASU in 1995 after spending four seasons as an assistant for former head coach Jeff Mittie, who is now the head coach at TCU. A graduate of Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, Mo., with a bachelor's degree in education, Boyer was an assistant coach for the men's program for six seasons, including the last three, which he spent as an assistant with the women's program as well. As an assistant to the men's team, Missouri Western was a NCAA Division II Tournament participant five years (1990, 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1995) and won two conference championships. The team made the Sweet 16 in As a women's assistant, Boyer and Missouri Western made two NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Final Four in 1995 and the Elite Eight the previous season. The team went 31-3 in 1995 and made it to the Elite Eight of the national tournament. It also went undefeated through its MIAA schedule at In 1994, the team finished third in the nation, losing in a national semifinal contest and finishing with a 29-3 overall mark. In his four seasons at Arkansas State as an assistant coach, Boyer and the Red Wolves earned a mark. The team went with a trip to the Women's NIT. In the process, ASU earned wins over nationally ranked Virginia and Kansas. The Red Wolves won 20 games in back-to-back seasons in the and seasons. The 1997 team opened the season with a victory over nationally ranked Illinois and had a 12-game winning streak during the season, the second longest in school history. The 1998 squad knocked off nationally ranked Western Kentucky at the Convocation Center and came within four points of scoring an upset over national power Louisiana Tech at home as well.
