Athletic Trainers Karen Green Vice President for Student Affairs/ Dean of Students Karen Green began her duties as vice president for student affairs/dean of students at Muhlenberg College on June 15, 2006, following more than four years as dean of students at Wells College in Aurora, N.Y. At Muhlenberg, Green oversees more than 70 fulltime employees and several departments, including athletics and recreation. Muhlenberg is committed to our scholar athletes and the athletic programs are an integral part of a liberal arts education, said Green. The lessons learned from participation in our programs will sustain our students throughout their lives. The opportunity to be involved in intramural and recreational programs provides balance from the rigors of a challenging academic experience. Students learn negotiation skills, teamwork, time management and to be effective leaders. Our coaches are committed to excellence and are partners with students notwithstanding their skill level. My predecessor as dean of students, Rudy Ehrenberg, said it best, We must provide our students with outstanding coaches, superb facilities and a commitment to excellent programs. These are the ingredients for a quality program and Muhlenberg College is committed to such excellence. I strongly support these words and will be fully committed to the College s athletic programs. 6 MuhlenbergAthletics centennial conference In its 17th year of all-sports competition, the Centennial Conference has taken its place among the nation s elite small college conferences. On June 4, 1981, Keith Spalding, then-president of Franklin & Marshall College, made the announcement that eight private colleges found it timely and appropriate to form a round-robin schedule among institutions with similar attitudes and practices in intercollegiate football. With that statement, the Centennial Conference was born. From , the eight private colleges Dickinson College, Franklin & Marshall College, Gettysburg College, Johns Hopkins University, Muhlenberg College, Swarthmore College, Ursinus College and Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) participated in a football-only conference. Because of the success in operating the Centennial Football Conference, the league expanded to an all-sports conference in 1992, with Bryn Mawr College, Haverford College and Washington College joining as charter members. A purpose and mission statement adopted by the presidents stated, Recognizing that our fundamental purpose is the academic mission of institutions, we agree to establish an all-sports conference in the spirit of rationalizing our competition by controlling travel, schedule and costs. The Conference will be controlled by the presidents of the member institutions. The Centennial Conference encourages athletic competition among national liberal arts colleges and universities that share similar academic aspirations and a commitment to the importance of the total educational experience of students engaged in sports. Intercollegiate athletics programs are an integral part of the life of the member institutions and flow from their educational objectives. Each institution provides a comprehensive, broad-based athletics program. All varsity sports are treated equitably, and every sport is important. The CC crowns champions in 24 sports and continues to sponsor intercollegiate programs of national prominence for women and men. On the average, Centennial members boast of 19 varsity teams, which is well above the national norm. Women s basketball in the CC is growing in national stature. Three years ago, three CC teams received invitations to the NCAA Tournament, and a CC representative has advanced to the second round of the NCAAs five times since COMPOSITE CC STANDINGS W L Pct Johns Hopkins Muhlenberg McDaniel Gettysburg Franklin & Marshall Dickinson Ursinus Swarthmore Washington (Md.) The Mules compete in the Centennial Conference in all sports and are members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III. Muhlenberg s sports program is designed to offer quality competitive experiences for the serious athlete, with opportunities for outstanding teams and individuals to advance to national Division III championships. However, given the breadth of the program, opportunities also exist for the unrecruited athlete to participate in varsity sports. Muhlenberg has excellent on-campus athletic facilities. Opened in 1982, the Life Sports Center is a building During the school year, Muhlenberg won the Centennial Conference championship in football, women s basketball and softball, and Mule individuals earned bids to the NCAA Division III Championships in wrestling, men s and women s track and field, and men s cross country. designed for athletics, intramurals and sports for life as primary uses. 7 BasketballFacilities Memorial Hall Life Sports Center Constructed 1954 On Saturday, Feb. 6, 1954, the dream of each Muhlenberg alumnus was realized when Memorial Hall, the new physical education building, was dedicated in a brief program. The program was concluded with the unveiling of a plaque honoring the Muhlenberg alumni who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean engagement. The plaque read: Memorial Hall; Dedicated to the Memory of These Men Who Made the Supreme Sacrifice in the Service of Our Country. Overcoming a halftime deficit of a single marker, the Muhlenberg men s team gained a well-deserved win over a hustling Gettysburg squad before a capacity dedication crowd. In the 50-plus years since, Memorial Hall has been the site of numerous volleyball matches, wrestling meets, concerts and, of course, basketball games including the first two rounds of the 2008 NCAA Division III Women s Basketball Tournament. With a built-in seating capacity of 3,529, Memorial Hall fosters a big-game atmosphere hard to match in a Division III facility. Renovations to the facility, including the repainting of the floor in the summer of 2004, have kept Memorial Hall modern-looking into its second half-century. THE SCOTTY WOOD TOURNAMENT Held annually in Memorial Hall the weekend before Thanksgiving, the Scotty Wood Tournament has grown into one of the most popular events of its kind in the nation. At a time when smallcollege basketball attendance is spotty and dozens of season-opener tip-off tournaments compete for a limited number of available teams, Muhlenberg College s Scotty Wood event is drawing good crowds, meeting financial goals and retaining major sponsors. The phenomenon has evolved into Scotty Wood Weekend at Muhlenberg: a spectacle of ceremonies, receptions and displays of student enthusiasm dribbling around eight women s and men s basketball games over two days. To generate greater student interest in the tournament, since 1986 the tournament committee has involved the professor and students from a Muhlenberg marketing management class to plan, implement and run publicity campaigns and attendance-drawing events. The marketing students sell t-shirts and other souvenirs, coordinate halftime HOMECOURT ADVANTAGE Due in part to excellent fan support, Muhlenberg has enjoyed a tremendous homecourt advantage since the mid-1980s, winning more than 70 percent of its games. The Mules set a school record with a 20-game homecourt winning streak in and topped that with a 22-game streak that ended in Berg was particularly dominant in Centennial Conference East Division games, winning 45 out of 49 at Memorial Hall from the league s founding in 1993 to the end of division play in Muhlenberg at Memorial Hall Year W L Pct Total activities, hold raffles for prizes and organize Scotty Wood parties and meals. Proceeds from the Scotty Wood Tournament have helped fund special trips for the Muhlenberg women s basketball team, including one to Germany and Austria in the summer of 2007 (see page 21). Renovated A three-level, 40,000-square-foot addition to the Life Sports Center opened in August 2004, further improving Muhlenberg College s athletic facilities. The addition, built directly west of the John Dietrich Field House, includes a large weight facility, an expanded cardio-fitness area, a snack bar, new facilities for health service and counseling, training rooms, locker rooms and coaches offices. The structure overlooks Scotty Wood Stadium and Varsity Field and is joined to the Life Sports Center by a large indoor corridor on the main level. A new main entrance faces the campus. The project also entailed renovations in the Field House, including installation of a new floor and track, new netting, new lighting and painting.
