6 INFORMATION SEASON OUTLOOK DUKE RETURNS EXPERIENCED GROUP The Blue Devils enter the season with seven of eight letterwinners returning from last season s team, and a highly touted transfer from Fresno State in Marianne Jodoin. Last season, Duke ran the ACC slate ending the season with a perfect 11-0 record, and finished with a 29-3 record overall. After claiming the ACC Tournament title, the Blue Devils advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA Championship before falling to eventual champion Florida, 4-3, in the semifinal. Jodoin joins the Blue Devils after posting a singles record last season at Fresno State including a perfect 14-0 mark in Western Athletic Conference play. Jodoin, a native of Varennes, Quebec, is a two-time WAC player of the year, two-time WAC all-tournament team selection in both singles and doubles, and 2011 WAC Freshman of the Year. In addition to Jodoin, Duke returns senior Mary Clayton, juniors Hanna Mar and Rachel Kahan, and last season s No. 1 ranked freshman class of Beatrice Capra, Ester Goldfeld, Monica Turewicz and Annie Mulholland. SEVEN RANKED IN ITA PRESEASON POLL Seven members of the Duke women s tennis team were listed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association s preseason rankings of the top 125 singles players in the nation, headlined by sophomore Beatrice Capra, who was tabbed No. 2 overall on the list. The seven ranked players is the most of any team in the nation, followed by UCLA who has five players ranked. Three other Blue Devils were also ranked in the top 50 in the preseason poll, with junior Marianne Jodoin coming in at No. 27, junior Hanna Mar listed at No. 35 and senior Mary Clayton tabbed No. 44. Sophomores Monica Turewicz, Ester Goldfeld and Annie Mulholland rounded out the ranked Duke players at No. 67, 68 and 108, respectively. The Blue Devils were also well represented in the ITA s preseason doubles rankings, as three tandems were listed among the top 60 in the nation. The duo of Capra and Mar received a No. 19 ranking, followed by the team of Clayton and Jodoin at No. 27 and Goldfeld and Mulholland at No. 43. CAPRA NO. 2 PLAYER IN THE NATION Capra wrapped up an outstanding freshman campaign with an overall record of 32-5 in singles, as well as a 23-2 mark in dual match play, and collected All-America accolades after reaching the quarterfinals of the 2012 NCAA Singles Championship in Athens, Ga. In addition, Capra was named the 2012 ACC Player of the Year, ACC Freshman of the Year, ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player, ITA National Co-Rookie of the Year and ITA Carolina Region Rookie of the Year. Capra s 33 doubles wins in 2012 were tied for first on the team, and were the second most by a freshman in program history. The Ellicott City, Md., native did not compete during singles play in the fall of season, but tallied a 4-1 record in doubles play en route to the championship match at the Riviera All-American in Pacific Palisades, Calif. ASHWORTH CLAIMS ACC COACHING RECORD Head coach Jamie Ashworth set the All-Time wins record in the ACC in 2012 after a 4-3 triumph over Virginia on March 23 to pass former North Carolina coach Kitty Harrison, who previously held the record with 352 wins. Over the past 17 years at the helm of the program, Ashworth has led Duke to a (.815) overall record and a (.843) ACC mark, while advancing to the NCAA Semifinals eight times, NCAA Championship match twice and collecting ACC Tournament Championships on eight occasions. CLAYTON NEARS 100-WIN CLUB Senior Mary Clayton is approaching the 100-win club as she enters the spring season, and currently owns a career record overall with a.756 winning percentage. Clayton, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., tallied a singles record in 2012, and with only four more wins, she will be one of only 21 Blue Devils to win 100 or more matches in their career. Vanessa Webb currently stands atop the list of career wins with 161 in her career. After a perfect 9-0 ledger in ACC play last season, Clayton moved into a tie for ninth on Duke s all-time ACC wins list with 24. Reka Zsilinszka currently holds the school record with WIN SEASON STREAK RESUMES With 29 wins in 2012, the Blue Devils notched their fifth straight season with at least 20 wins. In 16 seasons under head coach Jamie Ashworth, Duke has tallied win seasons, averaging 24 wins each season, and has failed to break the 20-win threshold just two times. CHALLENGING SCHEDULE Of the 18 dual matches in the spring of 2013, 11 will be against teams who were ranked in the final ITA rankings of 2012, including a 2012 NCAA tournament semifinal re-match when Duke hosts defending national champion Florida on Feb. 17. In addition to Florida, the Blue Devils will also face Northwestern, Notre Dame, Michigan, William & Mary, Princeton and Indiana during their non-conference slate. In addition to a challenging non-conference schedule, conference play will be even more competitive as the ACC has six schools ranked in the top 25 of last season s final ITA poll including North Carolina, Clemson, Virginia, Miami and Georgia Tech. MAR CRUISES THROUGH THE FALL Junior Hanna Mar concluded a successful fall season with an appearance in the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship in Flushing, N.Y. after topping No. 89 Aleksandra Josifoska of UNLV and No. 41 Katie Le of Santa Clara in the first two rounds. In addition to the solid performance in the national event, Mar claimed three titles this fall at the Duke Fab 4 Invitational in singles, and the ITA Regional Championships in both singles and doubles play. Mar, a native of Burr Ridge, Ill., tallied a 13-3 record this fall, including a 5-2 slate against ranked opponents. DEVIL S DOUBLES Last season, Duke tallied a (.705) overall record in doubles play led by the duo of Rachel Kahan and Beatrice Capra, who posted a 21-7 record on the season. With the 21 wins as a team, Capra and Kahan are currently 14th on the all-time list of wins in a season. During the season, Capra totaled 33 doubles wins, which tied for first on the team with Hanna Mar, and placed her in second on the all-time wins list in a season for a freshman. Julie Smith currently owns the record with 35 wins in the 2003 season. This fall, the Blue Devils continued their strong play by posting a 20-8 overall record in doubles play including a 5-3 ledger against nationally ranked opponents. Junior Hanna Mar led the way for the Blue Devils with a 9-1 record in doubles, highlighted by a trip to the Riviera All-American Championship match when she was paired with Capra. WIN STREAK ENTERING SPRING Entering the 2013 spring season, a number of Blue Devils have winning streaks extending from last season. Sophomore Monica Turewicz enters the spring on a 15 match win streak in dual matches dating back to March 2012 while junior Rachel Kahan kicks off the season on an 11-match win streak in dual matches. In addition, sophomore Annie Mulholland is in the midst of a nine match win streak in dual matches. In ACC play, Capra and Clayton hold a nine match win streak after going undefeated in 2012, while Turewicz enters the spring on an eight match streak. Vanessa Webb currently holds the school record with 22 consecutive ACC wins

7 Ambler Tennis Stadium and Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center Over the past decade, Duke University has invested more than $25 million to make its athletic facilities among the finest in the nation. This commitment is evident in the changes instituted directly for the Blue Devil tennis teams. Duke Athletic Director Kevin White continues to lead the way in providing Duke with top facilities to help student-athletes stay in peak condition. Originally completed in the summer of 1987, the Duke Tennis Stadium was renovated into the Ambler Tennis Stadium. The facility was funded by Merrill Ambler and features seat-backs for fan seating, a scoreboard, new court surfaces and restrooms. INFORMATION In addition to the fine outdoor courts, the Duke athletic department completed the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in the winter of Named after Karl and Alice Sheffield, the facility features six courts, offices for the coaches, a hall of fame room and locker rooms. It was awarded the 2000 United States Tennis Association Outstanding Tennis Facility on February 25, The Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center is only the third tennis center in North Carolina to receive the award since it began in The modern training room provides all of the equipment and services necessary to keep the Duke men s tennis team healthy and in action. The trainer s office is off the main training area, allowing the players convenient access to this care. The weight room is another extensive area, directed by strength coordinator Dan Perlmutter. The 3,300 square-foot weight room has over three tons of free weights along with Nautilus, Hydra-Gym and Universal stations. In 2008 the completion of the Michael W. Krzyzewski Center - Dedicated to Academic & Athletic Excellence - provided all of Duke s student-athletes with a new Academics Center featuring tutorial rooms, dedicated study space, computer lab areas and offices for academics staff, nearly tripling the size of the previous academics area. Some more recent additions to the tennis facilities include a new state of the art Daktronics indoor scoring system. This project, which was installed in the fall of 2006, includes seven wireless scoreboards. There are six individual scoreboards (one mounted behind each court) that provides the player s name as well as the game and set scores. The main scoreboard shows the dual match score and scores of all six courts. Also the six main outdoor courts have been resurfaced in the US Open (Duke) blue color. General Information There is no charge for tennis matches. All indoor matches occur in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. All outdoor tennis matches occur in the Ambler Tennis Stadium. The entrance to the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center is located between the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center and the Ambler Tennis Stadium. The handicap entrance to the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center is located on the south side of the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center The entrance to the Ambler Tennis Stadium is located behind the bleachers of the stadium via the stairwells Handicap seating is located on the south side of the courts closest to Krzyzewskiville. Restrooms in the Sheffield Tennis Center are located on court level under the bleachers. Restrooms in the Ambler Tennis Stadium are located underneath the bleachers between the two stairwells

10 COACHES & STAFF One of the winningest women s tennis coaches in the nation, Jamie Ashworth has led the Blue Devils to new heights. Since becoming the head coach in 1997, he has led the program to win seasons and 13 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Under his guidance in 2009, the Blue Devils reached the pinnacle of success as they captured the program s first NCAA Championship. Over the past 16 years at the helm of the program, he has led Duke to a (.815) overall record and a (.843) ACC mark, while advancing to the NCAA Semifinals eight times, NCAA Championship match twice and notching ACC Tournament Championships on eight occasions. 14 Kevin M. White VICE PRESIDENT & DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS ADJUNCT PROFESSOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION ST. JOSEPH S COLLEGE 72 COACHES & STAFF Kevin M. White was named Duke University s vice president and director of athletics on May 31, He also serves as an adjunct professor of business administration at the university. White, 60, joined the Duke family after leading Notre Dame s athletics program to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom from He also has held a number of prominent national leadership roles within intercollegiate athletics, including his service in as president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and in as president of the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association. Guided by the Strategic Plan that was approved by Duke s Board of Trustees in April of 2008, White made an immediate impact on Duke Athletics. In addition to leading the department to unprecedented success in competition, he reshaped the organization into a more efficient and modern department; strengthened ties to both campus and community constituents though consistent outreach efforts; successfully oversaw Duke s fundraising efforts during an economic downturn; completed partnerships with major corporate entities to enhance revenue streams; commissioned a master facilities plan to position Duke well into the 21st Century; and emphasized a stronger commitment to the university s intramural, club and recreational sports programs. Since White s arrival, Duke has captured three NCAA Championships women s tennis in 2009, men s basketball in 2010 and men s lacrosse in 2010 and nine ACC titles (three in 2011). On the strength of 14 teams participating in NCAA Championship competition and robust finishes in several sports, Duke ranked fifth in the 2011 Learfield Sports Directors Cup standings, which determine an institution s all-around strength in intercollegiate athletics. The fifthplace finish matched Duke s best in the rankings and its points earned were the most in program history. The fifth-place showing marked the eighth consecutive year that Duke has ended among the nation s top 20 programs. In White s three years at Duke, the Blue Devils placed 17th (2009), 10th (2010) and fifth (2011) in the Directors Cup standings. Twenty-three Blue Devil teams ranked among the nation s top 10 teams during the past three seasons with six men s basketball (2009, 2010, 2011), men s lacrosse (2010) and women s tennis (2009, 2010) reaching No. 1. In all, 42 Duke teams advanced to NCAA postseason competition the last three seasons. Individually, 89 student-athletes earned All-America, 159 All-ACC and 103 All-Region or District honors the past three years. During White s tenure, Duke boasts seven NCAA individual champions in Juliet Bottorff (outdoor track and field 10k in 2011), Mallory Cecil (women s tennis in 2009), Abby Johnston (threemeter diving in 2011), Nick McCrory (platform diving in 2010 and 2011), and Becca Ward (women s fencing, saber in 2009 and 2011). In 2011, Duke celebrated four individual NCAA and 11 individual ACC titles. Academically, Duke teams continued strong performances under White. In the 2011 spring semester, 25 of 26 Blue Devil varsity teams earned grade point averages of 3.0 or better after 24 of 26 teams achieved the same during the fall of In two key elements in tracking a department s academic success, Duke ranked among the nation s best again. Duke posted a 97% Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and 14 teams achieved a 100% GSR. Fifteen Blue Devil teams were ranked in the top 10% of their respective sport in the most recent Academic Performance Rate (APR) Report, including the men s basketball team that was only one of four national champions from the season included on the list. Duke was one of only three football programs in the ACC to qualify for this recognition and the 95 percent rate posted by the Blue Devils was the secondhighest among FBS teams in the nation. Individually in 2011, senior Dorian Cohen (men s fencing) received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship (one of 26 awarded nationally), while Allie Speidel (women s swimming and diving) was awarded one of 31 Marshall Scholarships in the United States. Three Duke student-athletes were selected CoSIDA Academic All-America, while 16 others received National Scholar-Athlete or Scholar All- America accolades. During the 2010 fall semester, 469 student-athletes posted a 3.0 grade point average or better. That number was 462 during the 2011 spring semester. In White s three-year tenure, former women s tennis player Parker Goyer won a Rhodes Scholarship (2009), while track athlete Sally Liu (2009) and Speidel (2011) earned prestigious Marshall Scholarships. Under White, Duke has continued its focus on outreach to the local community. Modeling the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program s commitment to service, learning projects and outreach, close to 500 Duke student-athletes across the department participated in a combined effort of more than 2,000 community service hours (an increase of nearly 600 hours based on activities and events coordinated through and reported to Student-Athlete Development during the year). White s commitment to the overall mission of the university remains clear. In May 2011, Duke Athletics announced that a portion of ticket sales from Blue Devil regular season home sporting events will be directed to the Duke University Libraries. Per White s vision, the Duke Athletics Library Fund will generate significant unrestricted revenue for the Duke University Libraries to support teaching and research across the institution. In , nine facility projects were completed, impacting most of Duke s 26 varsity sports. By August 2011, the new Duke Multi-Purpose Fieldhouse, an 80,000 square-foot facility that will house a 120-yard playing surface for the school s football program and other on-campus recreational activities, will be completed. White, who holds a Ph.D. in education, has taught graduate-level classes since 1982 and currently teaches a sports business course in Duke s Fuqua School of Business as part of Duke s MBA program. In August 2003, SI.com (the Sports Illustrated web site) listed White, then at Notre Dame, third in its rankings of the most powerful people in college football. In January 2004, The Sporting News listed him in its Power 100 as third among five names in the front office category (and the lone college athletics director among the 100). White previously served on numerous NCAA committees, including being an ex-officio member of the NCAA Committee on Academic Performance and a member of its Penalty and Rewards subcommittee. For several years, he was a representative with the football Bowl Championship Series. Additionally, White was part of the NCAA Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics (COIA) that dealt with academics, fiscal reform and student-athlete well-being. Currently, he is the secretary of NCAA Football, a non-profit corporation that acts as the collective voice to promote college football, and serves on the Black Coaches and Administrators Board of Directors. Given his background and success, it is not surprising that 20 current or former directors of athletics were mentored by White. That impressive list includes Jim Sterk of Washington State and San Diego State, Tom Boeh of Ohio University and Fresno State, Ian McCaw of Northeastern, Massachusetts and Baylor, Bruce Van De Velde of Utah State, Iowa State and Louisiana Tech, Herman Frazier previously of Hawaii, Rudy Keeling formerly of Emerson and now commissioner of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), Scott Devine of St. Mary s College (Md.), Tom Collins of Ball State, Tim Van Alstine of Western Illinois, Mark Wilson of Tennessee Tech, Bubba Cunningham of Ball State and Tulsa, Sandy Barbour (who followed him at Tulane) of California-Berkeley, Jim Phillips of Northern Illinois and Northwestern, Bernard Muir of Georgetown and Delaware, Sandy Hatfield Clubb of Drake, Vic Cegles of Long Beach State, Norwood Teague of Virginia Commonwealth, Bob Bierie previously of Loras College, Greg Capell previously of Loras College, and Boo Corrigan of Army. Prior to joining Notre Dame in 2000, White served as athletic director at Arizona State University, Tulane University, the University of Maine and Loras College in Iowa, where he originated the National Catholic Basketball Tournament. Before becoming an administrator, White served as head track and field coach at Southeast Missouri State ( ) and assistant cross country and track and field coach at Central Michigan ( ). He began his coaching career at Gulf High School in New Port Richey, Fla., coaching cross country and track and assisting in football and wrestling. White earned his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University in 1983 with an emphasis on higher education administration. In 1985, he completed postdoctoral work at Harvard University s Institute for Educational Management. He earned his master s degree in athletics administration from Central Michigan University in 1976 and his bachelor s degree in business administration in 1972 from St. Joseph s College in Rensselaer, Ind., where he also competed as a sprinter. White and his wife, Jane, a former college track and field coach, have five children and nine grandchildren
