With less than 25 seconds remaining and the game tied, Tauja Catchings came up with a steal and took it the length of the floor for the game winner. The Illini s win over then No. 10 Arkansas broke that school s 25-game home winning streak. Illinois win over Penn State on Jan. 17 ended the Lady Lions 34-game home court Big Ten win streak. The Illini defeated Drake and Duke in the first rounds, respectively, of the NCAA Tournament. UI battled top-ranked Connecticut in the Sweet 16 before falling, Season Accomplishments The team won the school s first Big Ten championship in women s basketball. Illinois regular season attendance total of 44,194 shattered the previous record of 20,927 set in Illinois set a Big Ten single-game attendance record when 16,050 fans attended the Feb. 23 Purdue game at the Assembly Hall. The Illini s seven-game conference winning streak from Jan. 17- Feb. 14 is the longest in school history. Illinois regular-season home record of 12-1 tied the school record and included a perfect 12-0 record at Huff Hall. Illinois season record of 24-8 was the program s best ever, bettering the record set in The Fighting Illini s Big Ten mark of 12-4 was the best conference record in the program s history. Ashley Berggren became the first Illinois Player ever to be named Big Ten Player of the Year by the media. She was also honorable mention All-America. Illinois averaged 82.5 points per game, the second best in school history. The 83.1 ppg average in Big Ten play ranked second in conference history. Season Highlights: Illinois won the San Juan Shootout Tournament title in November. Theresa Grentz won her 500th game with a victory over Providence in the tourney semifinal. Tauja Catchings was named the tournament MVP. Illinois won nine straight games, including a 7-0 mark to start the Big Ten season. The win over Purdue began an 18- game home court winning streak. Illinois built a 22-point first-half lead at No. 1 Tennessee before succumbing, Ashley Berggren hit a short jumper in the lane with two seconds left to lift the Illini over Purdue. The shot was the CNN Player of the Day. Senior Krista Reinking set the Illinois career three-point record against Minnesota on Jan.9. Reinking ended her career with 194 treys. Ashley Berggren became Illinois all-time leading scorer with 22 points at Purdue. She was named Third-Team All-America and finished with 2,089 points. Illinois defeated Michigan State, 98-51, on senior night. For the second straight year, Illinois hosted the NCAA First and Second Round. The Illini defeated UW-Green Bay, 82-58, and UC-Santa Barbara, 69-65, to advance the Sweet 16. Season Accomplishments: Illinois began the year ranked No. 7 in the nation in both national polls and its No. 5 ranking in the Dec. 1 and Dec. 8 USA Today/ESPN Poll were the highest rankings ever by an Illinois team. Ashley Berggren became the first Illinois player to earn All-Big Ten honors three straight years. Tauja Catchings and Alicia Sheeler were second-team all-conference choices. Coach Grentz earned her second straight Big Ten Coach of the Year Award. The Illini defeated four ranked teams -- Purdue, Wisconsin, Colorado, and Duke. 30 Big Ten Medal of Honor Wrestler John Lockhart, of Mahomet, is Illinois' 2002 male Medal of Honor winner. Lockhart was a three-time All-American for the Illini whose national title at heavyweight in 2001 helped lead the team to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. He placed third in 2002 and seventh in 2000 and completed his career with a record. He also was a two-time Academic All-American, posting a 3.43 GPA in kinesiology. Trackster Gia Lewis, of Champaign, is Illinois' 2002 female recipient. While competing for the Illini, she earned All-Big Ten honors after winning the discus title in She also holds the school record in the event. In addition to her success on the field, she was a triple major achieving degrees in all three fields. She was an academic All-American and All-Big Ten selection. In 1914, the Big Ten Conference endowed a Medal of Honor, to beawarded annually at each institution to the student demonstrating proficiency in scholarship and academics. Beginning in 1982, a woman athlete from each institution has also been awarded the Conference Medal of Honor. In the 86-year history of the award, 14 Fighting Illini football players have earned the award, including punter Forry Wells in There has been one father-son UI Medal of Honor duo, Lee Sentman (track) in 1931 and his son, Lee Sentman III (fencing) in Gymnast Howard Beck (1974 and 1975) is the only two-time recipient of the award.
