#FIGHTDORES HEAD COACH GEOFF MACDONALD Geoff Macdonald, Vanderbilt s longest- tenured coach, enters his 24th season as the head coach of the women s tennis team. Macdonald heads into the 2018 dual season as VU s active leader in career wins as a head coach. During the previous 23 seasons, the four-time SEC Coach of the Year and 2015 Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year has placed the Commodores among the nation s elite programs on a consistent basis. Since Macdonald joined the Vanderbilt staff in 1994, the Commodore tennis program has developed a reputation for rapid player improvement, strong commitments to coaching, and unmatched excellence on the court and in the classroom. Before Macdonald s arrival, the Vanderbilt women s tennis program had never been ranked higher than No. 28 in the nation. Under his leadership, the Commodores have finished no lower than No. 19 in 17 of the past 20 years, including a school record No. 1 ranking following the Dores National Championship title at the end of the 2015 season. For the third consecutive year, the Commodores capped the 2017 season with a deep run in the NCAA Tournament, falling to Florida in the Final Four. Just one week after clinching the SEC regularseason title, the Dores hosted the SEC tournament in Nashville, and walked away with the tournament crown. In 2016 Macdonald and his squad fell to the No. 15 Stanford Cardinal 4-2 in tournament semifinals in Tulsa, Okla. VU finished second in the SEC for the second year in a row, falling in SEC tournament semis. VU garnered two All-American honors in The Commodores remained undefeated at home for the third season, boasting a 35-match home winning streak was a year to remember for the Commodores as the program won its first SEC and NCAA National titles. On April 19th the Commodores upset the second-seeded UGA Bulldogs in a 4-3 thriller for the SEC Tournament Title. Exactly one month later, the Dores were making waves in tournament play once again, defeating the defending champions UCLA Bruins 4-2 to clinch Vanderbilt s third NCAA Championship and first tennis title. For his outstanding leadership on and off the court, Macdonald was voted the 2015 SEC Coach of the Year for the third time in his career and earned the 2015 Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year Award. Other notable wins include the Dores three victories over the Florida Gators, an achievement which has only been done by the 2015 VU squad. At the end of the 2015 campaign three Commodores earned ITA All-American status; Sydney Campbell (S), Ashleigh Antal (D) and Astra Sharma (D). 4 2017 VANDERBILT WOMEN S TENNIS falling to one of the top teams in the country, Southern Cal. In 2011, Macdonald lead his team back to the NCAA tournament with an appearance in the Sweet 16 round. In 2008, Macdonald and his team started out hot as they won eight of their first 10 matches, including wins over No. 2 Georgia Tech and No. 9 Notre Dame. The 2008 squad won eight straight matches in March, including six straight SEC matches. His 2008 squad defeated eight top-25 teams in route to its 11th straight sweet 16 appearance. During the first round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament, Vanderbilt s 4-0 win over Indiana State gave Macdonald his 300th career win, putting himself among the nation s best. The Commodores finished the year with a 20-6 (.769) record and were ranked 10th nationally by the ITA. While Macdonald s leadership continues to improve the Commodore program every season, Macdonald s impact was felt immediately in his very first year at Vanderbilt in The team finished the year 16-8, including an 8-3 mark in the SEC and advanced to the for the first time in school history. Once Vanderbilt began its rise to the top, the achievements kept coming. In 1996, the Commodores posted a 24-7 record, finished second in the SEC, advanced to the SEC Tournament Championship match for the first time and, once again, earned a berth in the, advancing to the Round of 16. The team s 24 wins marked the the third most wins by a single team in the nation that year. The team continued to improve with each successful season and in 2001 the Dores finally found themselves in the national spotlight as they competed in the NCAA finals. The event marked the first time that any Vanderbilt sports team had played for a national championship. Despite falling to the Stanford Cardinals, Macdonald s squad ended the season with a 26-5 record and a No. 4 national ranking, while three singles players and two doubles teams earned individual bids to the NCAA championships. The following season, Macdonald not only matched the success of the previous year, but led the Dores to a record-setting 27 wins. The team also advanced to the finals of the National Team Indoors tournament, which featured sixteen of the top ranked teams in the country. Following the season, Sarah Riske and Aleke Tsoubanos were both named ITA All-Americans. In 2003, Macdonald oversaw the final year of Sarah Riske s career, who became the school s only four-time All-American (two in singles, two in doubles). Riske left VU as the school s all-time winningest doubles player, but Tsoubanos surpassed that mark a year later. The Dores finished the 2003 season with a 21-6 record en route to advancing to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. In 2004, the Commodores returned to the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament where they lost to undefeated Stanford, the eventual national champions. The 2004 Commodore team included All American, All-Academic and ITA Scholar Tsoubanos, who is entering her ninth year as Macdonald s assistant. Other honors achieved by Commodores included Annie Menees All Academic and ITA Scholar awards, while Audra Falk and Kelly Schmandt landed All-American honors. In 2006, the Commodores posted a 23-5 record en route to the team s ninth consecutive NCAA Sweet 16 appearance, despite the young team s lack of senior -4- representatives. Following the season, junior Amanda Fish became the seventh Commodore under Macdonald to receive ITA All-American honors. Macdonald has earned three Coach of the Year honors, including SEC recognition for his 2001 team, which included four ITA ranked singles players. He previously earned the title at Duke and Louisiana State University, where he began his coaching career in Before coming to Nashville, Macdonald was the head coach at Duke University. Macdonald was honored with ACC Coach of the Year honors in While in Durham, he guided the Blue Devils to three conference championships and three appearances in the NCAA tournament, where Duke made two appearances in the quarterfinals and one semifinal appearance. During his three years with the Tigers, Macdonald took LSU from last in the SEC to the NCAA Championship as the No. 13 seed in just three years. Following the Tigers 1991 season, Macdonald was named the SEC Coach of the Year. Macdonald amassed a record while at the helm of the LSU women s tennis program. As a player at the University of Virginia, Macdonald capped off a successful collegiate career by winning the ACC singles title in He advanced to the NCAA Championship, where he defeated David Pate in the first round.

#FIGHTDORES Macdonald was named the ACC s Most Valuable Player and also won the league s Sportsmanship Award. He finished second to basketball great Ralph Sampson in the Athlete of the Year voting at Virginia in After his collegiate career, Macdonald played professionally for three years. And, toward that end, he adheres to a simple coaching philosophy: Hard work and hours of individual attention for each player every week. Macdonald is married to Kate Daniels, a highly acclaimed English professor at Vanderbilt, who also has taught at Wake Forest, LSU, Virginia, UMass and Bennington College. 26 2017 VANDERBILT WOMEN S TENNIS BROWNLEE O. CURREY JR. TENNIS CENTER The Brownlee O. Currey Jr., Tennis Center was completed in November With the opening of its doors, the Vanderbilt tennis program provides one of the finest tennis facilities in the nation for varsity collegiate tennis. Plans for the new tennis center were unveiled in April 1993 when former Director of Athletics Paul Hoolahan announced that a $2.2 million project was being made possible by the generous benefactors of Vanderbilt tennis. Nashville businessman Brownlee O. Currey Jr. spearheaded the fund-raising for the project. Additional gifts were made by the Joe. C. Davis Foundation, the Fleming Foundation and Mrs. Joanne Fleming Hayes. The previous tennis center, which had provided three indoor courts, underwent several changes throughout the renovation. A twostory, 16,000-square-foot addition was made to the existing indoor structure, providing enough space for five indoor courts. The lower level of the facility houses spacious locker rooms for both varsity teams as well as a training room and locker room space for visitors. A special feature of the center is a state-of-the-art audio/visual room, also located on the second floor. Small video cameras are mounted at the north end of each indoor playing court, allowing the coaches to monitor and record matches in progress on all five courts. The room also serves as a classroom for the coaches and their teams. In addition to the changes of the interior of the tennis center, the building was given an exterior face lift as well. Its new red-brick exterior now matches the architecture of many buildings on the Vanderbilt campus. The fundraising for the renovations of the outdoor tennis courts began in 2001, and five years later fans and athletes are enjoying the fruits of their patience and labor. The $5 million project was completed just in time for the beginning of the 2005 tennis season, where the team advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the seventh consecutive year. The new outdoor complex at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center includes nine lighted courts and seating for more than 1,000 spectators. The new facility also features vending areas and restrooms. One of the most dazzling features of the new facility is its stateof-the-art lighting system. The courts are lighted with the most powerful lights on the market so matches can be easily televised at night. The inaugural season of the outdoor facilities drew more fans out to support the Commodores due to the added comfort and accessibility. During the season, Vanderbilt added an electronic scoreboard to the outdoor courts, allowing fans to follow the action more closely. Electronic scoring was also added to the indoor courts at the same time. In the summer of 2009, Vanderbilt unveiled a new All- American display inside the Currey Tennis Center. The display recognized every tennis All-American who has donned the Black and Gold. Prior to the 2013 season all 15 courts were re-surfaced and changed from green to blue. The new courts are to be slower than the previous ones, last resurfaced prior to In 2014, Marie Casares, a former member of the Commodores women s tennis program ( ), played a role in pushing Vanderbilt athletics to the forefront of sustainable energy on campus. She proposed the installation of solar panels atop the Currey Tennis Center, where she once starred as a Commodore student-athlete. Since their compete installation in the fall of 2016, the panels have greatly reduced the building s energy consumption, and they could be the precursor to a renewable energy movement across Vanderbilt s campus. -26-

#FIGHTDORES VANDERBILT ADMINISTRATION Vanderbilt Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos continues to demonstrate his appreciation for and commitment to the University s athletic program in a variety of ways. For the ninth time since becoming Chancellor in 2008, Zeppos will put on his running shoes to lead the freshman class through the Vanderbilt Stadium tunnel and across Dudley Field in the Anchor Dash, moments before the Commodores kick off their home opener on September 9, His active role in Southeastern Conference leadership and regulatory issues and his vocal support of college athletics becoming more diverse and inclusive are just two examples of how Zeppos influence has been felt far beyond the Nashville campus. Zeppos has taken a keen interest in athletics at Vanderbilt throughout his tenure at the University which spans more than two decades. I don t call the plays or throw the passes, Zeppos said. I m here simply trying to do whatever I can to support all of the talented people who do these things. In the spring of 2016 Zeppos displayed that support yet again during the hiring of two of the nation s most dynamic and sought after basketball coaches, Bryce Drew and Stephanie White, to lead the Commodores men s and women s respective basketball programs. Prior to that, he worked hand-in-hand with Vice Chancellor and Athletics Director David Williams II to -27- lure Derek Mason away from Stanford University to lead the Vanderbilt football program. That effort is yielding big dividends on West End, as Mason enters his fourth straight season seeking even more victories. Zeppos previously endorsed an athletics capital improvement plan that has surpassed $60 million, orchestrating efforts to improve the student experience for athletes and assist with recruiting. One thing I consider the ultimate compliment is when a coach calls me and says, I ve got a couple of recruits here. Could you meet them? Zeppos has said. Zeppos previously served as president of the Southeastern Conference and continues to be an important voice within the SEC where his legal expertise and commitment to fairness, student-athlete welfare, and diversity have been on display for nearly a decade. He played a key role in the extensive SEC commissioner search while serving as chair of the SEC Executive Committee of presidents and chancellors and in March 2015, he introduced Greg Sankey as the choice to replace Mike Slive as league commissioner. A distinguished legal scholar, teacher and executive, Zeppos served from 2002 to February 2008 as Vanderbilt s chief academic officer, overseeing the University s undergraduate, graduate, and professional education programs as well as research efforts in liberal arts and sciences, engineering, music, education, business, law and divinity. As provost and vice chancellor, he chaired Vanderbilt s budgeting and capital planning council and led all fundraising and alumni relations efforts across the institution, in addition to overseeing the dean of students and dean of admissions. Zeppos has led a number of important initiatives at Vanderbilt, including the planning process for The Ingram Commons, a landmark transformation of the first-year experience; Warren and Moore colleges for upperclassmen; and Vanderbilt Barnard College, the next phase of the university s unique living-learning residential college system currently under construction on the original campus. Other key advancements include restructuring of the institution to split out clinical health care operations into a new corporate entity; the Academic Strategic Planning Group; innovative efforts in undergraduate admissions and financial aid; and the development of new programs in Jewish studies, law and economics and genetics. In February of 2016, Zeppos was honored by Insight Into Diversity magazine for his commitment to diversity and inclusion with its national Giving Back Award.

2017 VANDERBILT WOMEN S TENNIS In a bold move to strengthen Vanderbilt s commitment to admitting undergraduates on the basis of accomplishment and achievement, rather than their ability to pay, Zeppos significantly expanded the financial aid program in By replacing undergraduate, need-based loans with grant and scholarship assistance, the University opened its doors wider to highly talented and qualified students of all economic, cultural and geographical backgrounds. The expanded aid program is funded by a combination of strategic budget allocations and gifts from thousands of generous donors to the current Opportunity Vanderbilt campaign. Zeppos was recognized with five teaching awards at the law school before serving as an associate dean, associate provost, and provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. He served as interim chancellor for eight months prior to being formally appointed as Vanderbilt s eighth chancellor on March 1, The Chancellor is a member of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics and serves on a number of institutions Board of Directors: Association of American Universities, Foundation for Educational Exchange Between Canada and the United States of America (Fulbright Canada), Mary Parrish Center, Conexión Américas, and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He also recently served as co-chair of the United States Senate-appointed Task Force on Government Regulation of Higher Education. From 1982 to 1987, Zeppos practiced law in Washington, DC, at the United States Department of Justice and at Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, specializing in appellate litigation involving complex regulatory, statutory and constitutional matters. A Milwaukee native, Zeppos is a 1979 magna cum laude graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School, where he served as editor-in-chief of the Wisconsin Law Review and was selected as the outstanding graduate of his class. He studied history during his undergraduate years at the university and was a 1976 Phi Beta Kappa graduate. He is married to Lydia A. Howarth, an accomplished editor. They have two sons, Benjamin and Nicholas. -28-

#FIGHTDORES VANDERBILT ADMINISTRATION Vanderbilt Director of Athletics David Williams II ranks among the university s most prominent leaders. Aside from his role in McGugin Center, Williams is Vice-Chancellor for University Affairs and Athletics as well as a tenured professor at the University s nationally ranked law school. He continues to teach at the Law School where he conducts courses on Taxation and Education as well as Sports Law. He is also an active participant in the SEC and NCAA in matters of negotiations, reforms, enforcements and planning. Williams is a frequent speaker on collegiate athletics, including recent appearances at Harvard and Arizona State law schools and as keynote speaker at the Black Male Student Athlete Summit. Since adding athletics to his multiple titles and responsibilities in 2002, Vanderbilt has seen its athletic department and individual programs recognized as being among the nation s most innovative and successful. The academic year may have been one of the best yet under Williams leadership. Eight Vanderbilt teams reached NCAA postseason competition, including an SEC regular season and tournament title and a third straight Final Four appearance by the 2015 NCAA national champion women s tennis. Men s golf won its first SEC Championship and claimed a spot in the Final Four for the first time in program history. Vanderbilt baseball reached the NCAA tournament for the 12th straight season the longest active streak in the SEC and reached an NCAA Super Regional for the fourth time in five years. Meanwhile, women s bowling finished third at the and second consecutive Southland Conference crown. In the most recent Academic Progress Rate scores released by the NCAA, Vanderbilt football, men s golf, women s golf, men s tennis and women s tennis led the SEC in APR. Bowling and lacrosse also finished atop the Southland and BIG EAST Conferences, respectively. All Vanderbilt teams scored between 976 and 1000 (which is a perfect score), with an overall average of That average surpassed the NCAA four-year rate of 981. Moreover, seven programs received the prestigious Public Recognition Award, which honors programs ranking in the top 10 percent nationally in multiyear APR scores in each sport. In 2016, Williams again demonstrated his hiring prowess. Williams orchestrated two successful searches resulting in the hiring of two of the nation s top basketball coaches, Bryce Drew and Stephanie White, to lead the respective Vanderbilt men s and women s programs. In addition, the return of Commodore legend and favorite Carolyn Peck as a member of the women s staff was very well received by the Vanderbilt faithful. Drew and White join a growing list of highly regarded head coaches hired by Williams, including head football coach Derek Mason in The next year, Williams attracted Darren Ambrose from the University of Pennsylvania to direct the women s soccer program. In 2012, Williams directed the search for men s golf coach Scott Limbaugh, who has since led the team in three straight NCAA Final Eight appearances and just earned men s golf National Coach of the Year recognition. In addition, Williams has hired Greg Allen (women s golf coach), Ian Duvenhage (men s tennis coach) and Steven Keith (cross country/track coach), all who have taken their teams to NCAA postseason. Allen and Keith also have guided their teams to SEC team titles. Williams has also retained top coaches and staffs by orchestrating extensions for Mason, baseball coach Tim Corbin, women s tennis coach Geoff MacDonald, women s bowling coach John Williamson and women s lacrosse coach Cathy Swezey. Williams has addressed numerous facility upgrades, including a state-of-the-art training center which opened February 2016 in McGugin Center. The new training center provides top-notch medical care for Vanderbilt student-athletes. Crews recently finished replacing the football practice field, on the John Rich Practice Facility, with highly sought after Shaw Sports synthetic turf. Ground was broken immediately after this past baseball season for a new expansion of our wonderful baseball complex, Hawkins Field. Other improvements in recent years include refurbishing of Vanderbilt Stadium and its football locker rooms, an addition of new tennis courts and amenities at Brownlee O. Currey Tennis Center, renovations in Memorial Gym and McGugin Center, a new multipurpose facility for athletic and general university use, a new four-lane bowling center and a clubhouse with hitting bays for our men s and women s golf programs. An initiative to allow more overseas travel and study abroad for Vanderbilt student-athletes also has become reality during Williams tenure. In 2013, 15 athletes ventured to Tanzania during the summer for a service trip to bring shoes to underprivileged communities in Africa in conjunction with Soles4Souls. The partnership continued in 2014 with another community service effort to Costa Rica. In 2015, Williams led the summer service trip to Cuba, and this past summer a group of Commodores ventured to Jamaica on a service trip in partnership with Soles4Souls. -29-
