Live Stats may be accessed online at THE TEAMS: With a home record on the year, Arkansas State is assured of its first home winning season since 2006 when it takes the field against Murray State Tuesday night. The Red Wolves stand at overall after dropping two of three games at home last weekend against Sun Belt Conference foe Florida Atlantic. FAU won the Friday opener 9-5 before the Red Wolves evened the count at 1-1 with an 11-4 victory Saturday. The Owls clinched the series with a 10-6 win in the Sunday finale. Murray State travels to Jonesboro at overall, including an 11-7 mark when the Thoroughbreds are playing away from home. Murray State has been on a hot streak since mid-april, winning 10 of its last 13 games, including a 2-1 series victory at Tennessee- Martin last weekend. THE MURRAY STATE SERIES: Murray State leads the all-time series , but the Red Wolves have won 19 of the last 23 meetings. Drew Benes, the scheduled starter for ASU Tuesday night, took the loss in the game. FERGUSON NAMED SBC PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Arkansas State sophomore Andy Ferguson has been named Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance on the mound in the Red Wolves 11-4 victory over Florida Atlantic May 9 in Jonesboro. Ferguson, a right-hander from Benton, Ark., started and worked eight innings to earn the victory over the Owls, striking out seven batters, five looking, along the way. Ferguson did not issue a walk in the game, while giving up just two runs on six hits. In the middle innings, Ferguson retired nine consecutive batters and 15 of the 16 batters he faced. We are very proud of Andy s achievement this past weekend against Florida Atlantic, said ASU Head Coach Tommy Raffo. He continues to work hard and improve each time he takes the mound for Arkansas State. Ferguson became a weekend starter for the Red Wolves midway through the season and has earned four victories in his last six starts. He ranks third among all ASU pitchers with an ERA of 4.87 and is tied for third on the team with 40 strikeouts on the season. SBC TOURNAMENT SCENARIOS: Although the Red Wolves lost their Sun Belt Conference series against FAU last weekend, 2-1, it is still possible for ASU to make the 8-team field at the SBC Tournament in Troy, Ala., May The Red Wolves are currently in 10th place in the league, but can make the tournament field under the following conditions: Arkansas State sweeps UALR this weekend, and ONE of the following takes place - 1. FAU loses once in its 3-game series with FIU. 2. ULL sweeps UNO. 3. UNO wins 2-of-3 against ULL 4. Troy wins 2-of-3 against South Alabama. ELLER, JONES NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-REGION: Arkansas State seniors Brandon Eller and Jett Jones have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI baseball team, released Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Red Wolves On the Radio A-State Baseball can be heard on Earl FM, KBTM 1230 AM and online at Matt Stolz will handle the play-by-play, returning for his fourth season as the Voice of ASU Baseball. Eller, a first baseman from Sherwood, Ark., was named to the first team and will be placed on the Academic All-America ballot, while Jones, a pitcher from Stuttgart, Ark., was named to the second team. Eller and Jones were two of just 22 players named to the teams, which are made up of studentathletes from Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi and New Mexico. We are extremely pleased and excited about Brandon and Jett receiving top academic honors as student-athletes from CoSIDA and ESPN The Magazine, said ASU Head Coach Tommy Raffo. They have worked diligently in the classroom throughout their careers at ASU and have deservingly been recognized for their efforts. Eller is a three-time Academic All-District winner and was named Academic All-America following his junior season. A Mathematics major, he carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average and is currently batting a career-high.311. He has driven in 35 runs on the year and has five home runs, both of which rank him second on the ASU team. He has started 143 consecutive games over the last three seasons and has hit successfully in 31 of the last 34 games. A Chemistry major with a 3.85 GPA, Jones has been outstanding since moving to the bullpen midway through his senior season. He has given up just six earned runs in his last seven appearances and struck out six batters in just 3.1 innings against leagueleader Western Kentucky April 18. His 35 strikeouts and 49.0 innings pitched are tops among ASU relievers, and his 19 walks ties for second-fewest on the team. To be nominated for Academic All-Region honors, student-athletes must maintain at least a cumulative 3.2 GPA and be at least a sophomore both academically and in athletic eligibility. Eller and Jones were the only players from the state of Arkansas or the Sun Belt Conference to be named to the Academic All-District VI team at the University level. ELLER WINS TERRY GWIN AWARD: Arkansas State senior first baseman Brandon Eller, track and field performer Amy Bowman and football player Brian Flagg were named the recipients of the prestigious Terry Gwin Awards at the annual Student-Athlete Senior Ring Ceremony at the ASU Student Union Auditorium April 27. The award is named after former ASU football player Terry Gwin and is the highest honor ASU student-athletes can receive. The awards are based on leadership, citizenship, scholarship and athletic performance. ASU student-athletes nominated for Sun Belt Conference awards were honored at the ceremony as well. Eller and basketball player Caroline Starr were nominated for 2009 A-State Baseball 2

3 the Sun Belt Conference Sporting Behavior Award. Starr was also nominated for the SBC Postgraduate Award and NCAA Woman of the Year. Flagg and Bowman were nominated as SBC Student-Athletes of the Year. To be added to the broadcast for baseball releases, contact Van Provence in the Sports Information office. 31 AND DONE: The Red Wolves shut down two 31-game hit streaks in a 4-day period when they faced Western Kentucky April 18 and Tennessee-Martin April 21. Western Kentucky designated hitter Matt Rice went into the Hilltoppers game at ASU April 18 with a 31-game hit streak on the line and came away empty. Four days later, Tennessee-Martin second baseman Scott Gladstone took the field against the Red Wolves having hit successfully in his last 31 games, but like Rice, did not get a hit off of the ASU pitching staff. EXCELLING IN THE CLASSROOM: The Arkansas State baseball team finished the 2008 fall semester with 16 current members of the team on the Academic Honor Roll, and posted an outstanding team GPA of 3.01 during the term. Members of the team designated as Summa Cum Laude ( GPA) were seniors Brandon Eller, Jett Jones and junior Cody Pace. Members of the team designated as Magna Cum Laude ( GPA) were sophomore Andy Ferguson and freshman Codie Rollins. Arkansas State pitchers Chase Ware, Nick Lambert, Jacob Lee, Andy Ferguson, Jett Jones and Chris Bullington held the Hilltoppers, who started the week hitting.350 as a team, to a.181 average on the weekend. The Red Wolves gave up just 19 hits and six earned runs on the weekend while walking just seven batters and registering 32 strikeouts in three games. During the weekend, 14 of the 19 hits ASU surrendered were singles, and 22 of the 32 strikeouts were recorded by three pitchers - Ware notched seven strikeouts in nine innings, Jones fanned seven batters in just four innings, and Ferguson struck out eight Hilltoppers in just five innings in his first conference start. DENIED: Six Arkansas State pitchers combined to throw 22 consecutive scoreless innings spanning three games against Memphis and Chicago State April The Red Wolves did not allow a run in the final seven innings of their 8-7, 10-inning victory over Memphis Wednesday, shut out Chicago State in nine innings Friday and went the first six innings of Saturday s win without giving up a run. ASU pitchers Chris Bullington, Andy Ferguson, Nick Lambert, Chase Ware, Jett Jones and Ryan Blackburn all contributed to the streak. FANNING FOUR: Arkansas State senior Jett Jones struck out four batters in one inning during the April 10, 15-0 victory over Chicago State. Jones struck out the first two batters he faced in the seventh inning, and after a dropped third strike allowed his third strikeout victim to reach base, Jones fanned the fourth batter he faced to close out the frame. SEASON HIGH FOR K S: Arkansas State pitchers Chase Ware, Jett Jones and Ryan Blackburn combined to strike out a season-high 16 batters in ASU s 15-0 win over Chicago State April 10. The 16 strikeouts was just two short of the all-time school record for strikeouts in a single game. The 18-strikeout record was set against Kansas in 1960 and matched in a 1995 game against Memphis. SEASON HIGH FOR HITS: The Red Wolves tied their season high with 18 hits in their 15-0 victory over Chicago State April 10, then topped the mark when they belted out 20 hits in their 16-9 win over the Cougars the next afternoon. The 38 hits in the two games is the most in any two consecutive games this season. LAMBERT SETS RECORD: Arkansas State senior right-hander Nick Lambert broke the ASU record for career appearances March 21 when he took the mound in the 10th inning of ASU s 10-6 victory over ULM. Lambert went to the hill in his 86th contest to break the record of 85 set by Ryan Hamilton from Lambert entered the game with the winning run at third and one out, struck out the next two batters to end the ULM threat, then retired the side in the 11th to wrap up his third victory of the 2009 A-State Baseball 3

4 season. He now has 99 appearances in his career. BROWN HEATING UP: Senior third baseman Guy Brown is batting.305 this season, 38 points higher than his career average heading into the season. Brown has also started 187 consecutive games for the Red Wolves, the second-most in school history behind Chris Floyd, who started 224 consecutive from STOLEN BASES ADDING UP: With 49 games under its belt, Arkansas State has topped the stolen base mark set for all of last year. Arkansas State has 36 stolen bases on 43 attempts in ASU stole just 26 bases during the 2008 season. TURNING TWO: Arkansas State has turned 35 double plays thus far in the 2009 season, compared to just 34 in all of last season. The Red Wolves turned a season-high four double plays March 10 in their 11-1 victory over Harris-Stowe and have turned three double plays in two other games this season. The four double plays against Harris-Stowe was just one short of the school record, set in 1952 against Arkansas Tech. ARKANSAS STATE MOURNS PASS- ING OF GEORGE KELL: The Arkansas State University family joins the family of George Kell in mourning the passing of the former Northeast Arkansas baseball legend. A native of Swifton, Ark., Kell was considered one of the greatest third basemen ever to play the game and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Kell was an active supporter of Arkansas State baseball for many years. Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field, the home of ASU Baseball, bears the name of the former third baseman who won the American League batting title in Kell was a long-time supporter of ASU Athletics and was inducted into the ASU Athletic Department Hall of Honor in He was honored by the ASU baseball program and the ASU Home Run Club at the 2008 Grand Slam Banquet. We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Kell, said ASU Director of Athletics Dr. Dean Lee. He left a tremendous impact not only on Arkansas State University, but on the entire nation with his accomplishments both on and off the baseball field. His loyalty to the ASU family will always be remembered by the fans that enter our stadium which bears his name. ANOTHER HONOR FOR ELLER: Arkansas State senior Brandon Eller has been selected as one of 30 NCAA baseball student-athletes to be candidates for the 2009 Lowe s Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be classified as a NCAA Division I senior and have significant achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, character, community and competition. Brandon is a complete student-athlete in my mind, said ASU Head Coach Tommy Raffo. He works hard off the field in the community. He does a wonderful job in the classroom. He plays hard on the field and gets the most out of his ability. Eller has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA while at ASU, vaulting him to ESPN The Magazine Academic All Region First Team in both 2007 and 2008 and Third Team Academic All America in He was also named to the Athletic Director s Honor Roll every semester and to the Sun Belt Conference Academic Commissioner s List three consecutive years. Voted team captain entering his senior season, Eller overcame shoulder surgery following his freshman season to come back and be a solid three-year contributor for the ASU baseball program. A starter in all games last season, Eller was one of three players to start all 55 games in He led ASU with 19 multiple-hit games in 2008, including three-hit performances against Michigan State, Tennessee-Martin and Western Kentucky. In addition, he delivered a team-high 16 doubles and a batting average of.290 (third-highest on team). He ranked second on team with 62 runs scored and second on the team with 32 RBI s. Brandon had three home runs and one triple and led the team in 2007 with batting average of.347. He has started 114 of 115 games over the past two-plus seasons for ASU. BACK ON TRACK ON THE ROAD: With ASU s 2-1 series victory at ULM March 20-22, the Red Wolves captured their first series victory on the road since sweeping ULL to open conference play in the 2008 season. ASU PITCHING SHINES: The Red Wolves pitching staff enjoyed an outstanding weekend in the Sun Belt Conference opening series against Louisiana-Lafayette March 6-8. Nine Red Wolves saw action on the mound during the weekend and gave up just 15 hits in the three games combined. All 15 of the Ragin Cajun hits were singles and the effort helped hold ULL to only five total runs on the weekend - two of which were unearned. The Red Wolves posted a team ERA of 0.96 on the weekend and held the Cajuns to a.163 batting average. Senior Chase Ware got the weekend off to a strong start when he threw a complete-game shutout in the Friday night game, striking out nine batters to lead Arkansas State to a 2-0 victory. The Red Wolves continued to be strong on the mound in this week s midweek doubleheader against Harris-Stowe, giving up just three runs in the two games. FREE BASEBALL: Arkansas State has played seven extra-inning games this season, going 4-3 in those contests. Arkansas State defeated Texas State 4-3 in the season opener and closed out the Sun Belt Conference series with Louisiana-Lafayette two weeks ago with a 3-2 win to clinch the series. The Red Wolves dropped their first extra-innings game of the season when they fell 10-8 Friday night in the series opener at Middle Tennessee State. The Red Wolves defeated ULM 6-4 March 21 in extra innings before falling 10-8 in the series finale at ULM March 22. Arkansas State rallied to beat Memphis 8-7, March 8 in extra innings, then fell to Western Kentucky 3-2 April 17. All of ASU s extra-inning games were 10-inning affairs with the exception of of the 10-8 loss at ULM, which went 11 innings. OPENING WITH SUCCESS: The 61st season of Arkansas State baseball got underway Feb. 20, with ASU picking up a 4-3 victory over Texas State to earn its first season-opening victory since the 2006 season. First-year head coach Tommy Raffo became the fourth A-State baseball coach to pick up a victory in his coaching debut. MORE OPENING SUCCESS: With its victory over SIU-Edwardsville Feb. 27, Arkansas State won its home opener for the 19th consecutive season, scoring the most runs in a single game since defeating Western Kentucky 21-4 during the 2006 season. OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION: After scoring 11 runs combined in its first four games, Arkansas State exploded for 11 runs in the fifth inning of its victory over Southern-Illinois Edwardsville Feb. 27. Senior Brandon Eller and sophomores Todd Baumgartner and Murray Watts all hit home runs in the frame, with Eller and Baumgartner unleashing three-run shots. Arkansas State finished the game with 19 hits as 22 players made appearances at the plate. CHASING SUCCESS: Arkansas State senior pitcher Chase Ware has been named to the All-Sun Belt Conference Preseason Baseball Team, the league announced Feb. 10. Ware was one of two starting pitchers named to the preseason all-conference team as voted on by all 11 head coaches from across the Sun Belt Conference. Louisiana-Monroe shortstop Ben Soignier was named the league s Preseason Player of the Year, while Western Kentucky s Matt Ridings was named Preseason Pitcher of the Year and also earned all-conference honors as a starting pitcher along with Ware. Western Kentucky was the preseason favorite to win the Sun Belt title, while 2009 A-State Baseball 4

5 Arkansas State was voted 10th. A two-time Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week during the 2008 season, Ware earned second-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors as a junior after posting an ERA of 3.57 the third lowest of any pitcher in the league. Despite finishing the season at 5-6, Ware was one of the most effective pitchers in the Sun Belt Conference during the 2008 season. In 85.2 innings pitched, which was the third most of any pitcher in the conference, Ware gave up just 34 earned runs on 84 hits. He struck out 67 opposing batters while walking 26. We are extremely happy that Chase has been named to the preseason all-conference team, said ASU Head Coach Tommy Raffo. It is an honor for Chase and our entire program. We expect Chase to be an integral part of our weekend rotation and this honor certainly reinforces the expectations we have for him during the upcoming season. The Sun Belt Conference preseason team was the second such honor the pound right-hander from Southaven, Miss. has earned heading into the 2009 season. Ware was also named to the Rivals.com preseason All-Sun Belt Team in late January. Last season, Ware was named the league s player of the week after throwing a complete-game shutout at Louisiana-Lafayette Mar. 8, and earned the honor again after giving up one earned run while striking out seven batters in ASU s 8-2 win at Florida Atlantic May 9. MALATESTA INKS WITH ASU: Arkansas State Head Coach Tommy Raffo announced May 4 that Phillip Malatesta (Oxford, Miss.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his baseball career at ASU. Malatesta, a 6-2, 200-pound right-handed pitcher and outfielder, is a four-year player at Oxford High School, starting at pitcher for the two years. Malatesta was selected to play in the Crossroads Diamond Club High School All-Star Game and finished the season at 11-0 with an ERA of In 64.2 innings of work, he gave up just 26 runs on 43 hits, with 22 walks and 88 strikeouts. We are very excited about adding Phillip Malatesta to the Red Wolves baseball family, said ASU Head Coach Tommy Raffo. He has very good command of the strike zone and we think he can be a major contributor for us in Sun Belt Conference play. He brings hard work, competitiveness and a desire to be a part of our program and we expect Phillip to make a big impact for us early in his career. Phillip is the son of Larry and Susanne Malatesta and was coached at Oxford by Bradley Roberson. He is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars, Mu Alpha Theta and the OHS Honor Roll. He won the U.S. Achievement Academy National Leadership and Service Award and was named Student of the Month and is a Distinguished Alumni Congressional Youth Leadership Council nominee. Larry Templeton, Former Director of Athletics (Mississippi State) and Chairman, NCAA Baseball Tournament Selection Committee Tommy Raffo was named Arkansas State's fifth head coach on July 1, Raffo comes to Jonesboro with 14 years as an assistant coach at Mississippi State University under his belt. He served as the hitting and outfield coach for a Bulldog program that made three trips to the College World Series. "We are extremely pleased to hire a coach with the background and experience of competing at the highest level that Tommy Raffo brings," said ASU Director of Athletics, Dr. Dean Lee. "We had an extremely strong pool of candidates for this position, and feel that Coach Raffo was unquestionably the best fit to take over the Arkansas State baseball program. Tommy is highly respected in the coaching field for his integrity and for his superior knowledge of the game." During his 14 seasons at Mississippi State, Raffo served as the recruiting coordinator for the Bulldog baseball program, landing 10 straight recruiting classes ranked in the top 33 nationally by Collegiate Baseball. He coached seven All-America players and four Academic All-Americans. He was named as the 2007 Southeastern Conference Fellowship of Christian Athletes Coach of the Year, and during his time at MSU, 49 Bulldogs were chosen in the Major League Baseball Draft. Raffo's outstanding recruiting at MSU paid dividends for the program as he helped the Bulldogs reach the SEC Tournament 12 times, with two championships to their credit. Mississippi State also made 11 appearances in the NCAA Tournament during Raffo's time with the program, winning five regional titles. The Bulldogs made three appearances in the NCAA Super Regionals and advanced to the College World Series in 1997, 1998 and Raffo coached one Johnny Bench Award winner, given annually to the top college catcher in the country, and helped seven hitters finish the season in the SEC's top five batting averages. As a player, Raffo was co-captain of the 1990 Mississippi State team that advanced to the College World Series. He was a two-time Academic All-American and a three-time Academic All-SEC selection. He was named first-team All- SEC in 1989 and 1990, and in 1990 earned second-team All-America honors from both the American Baseball Coaches Association and Baseball America. "My family and I are extremely excited about this opportunity," said Raffo. "Since my first visit, I was impressed by the campus, by the city of Jonesboro, but most importantly, by the people. There is an energy at Arkansas State that I did not expect. What a special time for ASU baseball. Every person I meet is enthusiastic about the leadership on campus and the direction our baseball program is headed. I can't wait to lead and be a part of it." After earning his Bachelor's of Business Administration Degree from Mississippi State in 1990, Raffo was chosen by the Miami Miracle with the first pick of the eighth round in the 1990 MLB Draft. While playing in the Reds organization, he was the MVP of the 1991 South Atlantic League All- Star Game, and was Co-Captain of the 1992 Midwest League Champion Cedar Rapid Reds.
