The five-game home stand will be the final home games of the 2009 season for the Red Wolves. THE TEAMS: Arkansas State will take the field Wednesday with an overall record of 19-27, while the Skyhawks will make the trip to Jonesboro at on the season. Both teams went 1-2 last weekend in conference action, with ASU dropping a Sun Belt Conference series at Florida International and UTM falling at home to Austin Peay. The two teams last met April 21, with UTM taking a 6-2 win over the Red Wolves April 21 in Martin, Tenn THE UTM SERIES: Arkansas State holds a advantage in the series with the Skyhawks after last week s loss at UTM. When the two teams met last year, ASU picked up a 12-6 victory in Martin March 25, but UTM evened the count for the year with a 9-8 win in Jonesboro April 1. AMONG THE BEST IN THE BELT: ASU sophomore center fielder Todd Baumgartner is second in the Sun Belt Conference with 76 hits and is just three behind leagueleader Bryce Brentz of Middle Tennessee heading into the home stretch of the season...baumgartner s.364 batting average ranks him 13th in the Sun Belt...he is also tied for ninth in the Sun Belt in runs scored (45), and tied for eighth in doubles (14) and...senior pitcher Chase Ware leads the league with 75 and his ERA of 3.33 is second-best in the league and senior Chris Bullington is sixth with an ERA of 3.71 and ninth with 53 strikeouts. SEASON HIGHS AND HIGHLIGHTS: Arkansas State set several new season highs in its series at FIU last weekend, including senior Chase Ware s 10-strikeout performance in Friday night s 13-1 win over the Panthers. Ware s strikeout total surpassed his nine-strikeout performance set on two difference occasions earlier this season once against ULL and once against South Alabama the Red Wolves were hit by a seasonhigh six pitches during the Friday night win over FIU, surpassing the total of four set twice earlier this season junior shortstop put down two sacrifice bunts in Friday s victory at FIU the most for an ASU player in any game this season. ELLER WINS TERRY GWIN AWARD: Arkansas State senior first baseman Brandon Eller, track and field performer Amy Bowman and football player Brian Flagg were named the recipients of the prestigious Terry Gwin Awards at the annual Student-Athlete Senior Ring Ceremony at the ASU Student Union Auditorium April 27. The award is named after former ASU football player Terry Gwin and is the highest honor ASU student-athletes can receive. The awards are based on leadership, citizenship, scholarship and athletic performance. ASU student-athletes nominated for Sun Belt Conference awards were honored at the ceremony as well. Eller and basketball player Caroline Starr were nominated for the Sun Belt Conference Sporting Behavior Award. Starr was also nominated for the SBC Postgraduate Award and NCAA Woman of the Year. Student-athletes from each sport were also recognized as institutional nominees for the Sporting Behavior Award, including Starr, Bowman, Eller, football player Alex Carrington, cross country runners Maggie Kimani and Brad Reach, golfers Adrian Sportsman and Sawyer Radler, soccer player Stasha Siers, tennis player Leydi Zora, volleyball player Erin Neeley, bowler Emily Troutman, basketball player Jeremy Thomas and track and field performer Bryant Hankton. SPRING COOKOUT PLANNED: The Arkansas State baseball program invites all members of the Home Run Club to the ASU Baseball Spring Cookout Thursday following practice. The cookout will be held on the Barton s Baseball Deck at Tomlinson Stadium, and all members of the Home Run Club are encouraged to attend. Anyone interested in joining the Home Run Club is also invited to attend and meet the ASU baseball team and coaching staff. Thursday s practice is scheduled to end at 5:00 p.m., with the cookout beginning shortly afterward. The team and coaching staff are very appreciative of the support given to us by the Home Run Club, said ASU Head Coach Tommy Raffo. We are all looking forward to the opportunity to thank them for their enthusiasm and support heading into this weekend s series with FAU. The Red Wolves host Florida Atlantic this weekend in a key Sun Belt Conference series at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field. Friday s series opener is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. Saturday s game is scheduled to get underway at 2:00 p.m., with Senior Day ceremonies scheduled for approximately 1:45 p.m. Sunday s series finale is set to begin at noon. The FAU series will be the final Sun Belt Conference home series of the 2009 season. STRONG ON THE MOUND: Although the Red Wolves came up on the short end of a 2-1 series loss to Western Kentucky last weekend, the ASU pitching staff put forth a stellar effort against the league-leading Hilltoppers. Arkansas State pitchers Chase Ware, Nick Lambert, Jacob Lee, Andy Ferguson, Jett Jones and Chris Bullington held the Hilltoppers, who started the week hitting.350 as a team, to a.181 average on the weekend. The Red Wolves gave up just 19 hits and six earned runs on the weekend while walking just seven batters and registering 32 strikeouts in three games. During the weekend, 14 of the 19 hits ASU surrendered were singles, and 22 of the 32 strikeouts were recorded by three pitchers - Ware 2009 A-State Baseball 2

3 notched seven strikeouts in nine innings, Jones fanned seven batters in just four innings, and Ferguson struck out eight Hilltoppers in just five innings in his first conference start. 31 AND DONE: The Red Wolves shut down two 31-game hit streaks in a 4-day period when they faced Western Kentucky April 18 and Tennessee-Martin April 21. Western Kentucky designated hitter Matt Rice went into the Hilltoppers game at ASU April 18 with a 31-game hit streak on the line and came away empty. Four days later, Tennessee-Martin second baseman Scott Gladstone took the field against the Red Wolves having hit successfully in his last 31 games, but like Rice, did not get a hit off of the ASU pitching staff. HIT STREAKS BUILDING: ASU junior outfielder Cody Pace extended his consecutive-game hitting streak to 20 games last week the longest single-season hit streak at Arkansas State since former All-American Josh Yates had 21-game hit streak during the 2007 season. Yates streak actually lasted 23 games he hit successfully in the last two games of the 2006 season as well. When Pace began the hit streak, senior first baseman Brandon Eller was in the process of putting together a 15-game hit streak that at the time, was the longest of the season for the Red Wolves. Although Eller s streak has since ended, he has hit successfully in 29 of the last 31 games. EXCELLING IN THE CLASSROOM: The Arkansas State baseball team finished the 2008 fall semester with 16 current members of the team on the Academic Honor Roll, and posted an outstanding team GPA of 3.01 during the term. Members of the team designated as Summa Cum Laude ( GPA) were seniors Brandon Eller, Jett Jones and junior Cody Pace. Members of the team designated as Magna Cum Laude ( GPA) were sophomore Andy Ferguson and freshman Codie Rollins. Red Wolves named Cum Laude ( GPA) were seniors Guy Brown, Lawson Hipps and Nick Lambert, juniors Cory Lambert and Danny Riemenschneider, sophomores Drew Benes, Justin Counce and Murray Watts, and freshmen Kevin Burgi, Jacob Lee, Jeff Miller and Justin O Brien. FANNING FOUR: Arkansas State senior Jett Jones struck out four batters in one inning during the April 10, 15-0 victory over Chicago State. Jones struck out the first two batters he faced in the seventh inning, and after a dropped third strike allowed his third strikeout victim to reach base, Jones fanned the fourth batter he faced to close out the frame. SEASON HIGH FOR K S: Arkansas State pitchers Chase Ware, Jett Jones and Ryan Blackburn combined to strike out a season-high 16 batters in ASU s 15-0 win over Chicago State April 10. The 16 strikeouts was just two short of the all-time school record for strikeouts in a single game. The 18-strikeout record was set against Kansas in 1960 and matched in a 1995 game against Memphis. SEASON HIGH FOR HITS: The Red Wolves tied their season high with 18 hits in their 15-0 victory over Chicago State April 10, then topped the mark when they belted out 20 hits in their 16-9 win over the Cougars the next afternoon. The 38 hits in the two games is the most in any two consecutive games this season. LAMBERT SETS RECORD: Arkansas State senior right-hander Nick Lambert broke the ASU record for career appearances March 21 when he took the mound in the 10th inning of ASU s 10-6 victory over ULM. Lambert went to the hill in his 86th contest to break the record of 85 set by Ryan Hamilton from Lambert entered the game with the winning run at third and one out, struck out the next two batters to end the ULM threat, then retired the side in the 11th to wrap up his third victory of the season. He now has 98 appearances in his career. BROWN HEATING UP: Senior third baseman Guy Brown is batting.3041season, 37 points higher than his career average heading into the season. Brown has also started 184 consecutive games for the Red Wolves, the second-most in school history behind Chris Floyd, who started 224 consecutive from STOLEN BASES ADDING UP: With 46 games under its belt, Arkansas State has topped the stolen base mark set for all of last year. Arkansas State has 34 stolen bases on 41 attempts in ASU stole just 26 bases during the 2008 season. TURNING TWO: Arkansas State has 2009 A-State Baseball 3

4 turned 33 double plays thus far in the 2009 season, compared to just 34 in all of last season. The Red Wolves turned a season-high four double plays March 10 in their 11-1 victory over Harris-Stowe and have turned three double plays in two other games this season. The four double plays against Harris-Stowe was just one short of the school record, set in 1952 against Arkansas Tech. ARKANSAS STATE MOURNS PASS- ING OF GEORGE KELL: The Arkansas State University family joins the family of George Kell in mourning the passing of the former Northeast Arkansas baseball legend. A native of Swifton, Ark., Kell was considered one of the greatest third basemen ever to play the game and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Kell was an active supporter of Arkansas State baseball for many years. Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field, the home of ASU Baseball, bears the name of the former third baseman who won the American League batting title in Kell was a long-time supporter of ASU Athletics and was inducted into the ASU Athletic Department Hall of Honor in He was honored by the ASU baseball program and the ASU Home Run Club at the 2008 Grand Slam Banquet. We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Kell, said ASU Director of Athletics Dr. Dean Lee. He left a tremendous impact not only on Arkansas State University, but on the entire nation with his accomplishments both on and off the baseball field. His loyalty to the ASU family will always be remembered by the fans that enter our stadium which bears his name. ANOTHER HONOR FOR ELLER: Arkansas State senior Brandon Eller has been selected as one of 30 NCAA baseball student-athletes to be candidates for the 2009 Lowe s Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be classified as a NCAA Division I senior and have significant achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, character, community and competition. Brandon is a complete student-athlete in my mind, said ASU Head Coach Tommy Raffo. He works hard off the field in the community. He does a wonderful job in the classroom. He plays hard on the field and gets the most out of his ability. Eller has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA while at ASU, vaulting him to ESPN The Magazine Academic All Region First Team in both 2007 and 2008 and Third Team Academic All America in He was also named to the Athletic Director s Honor Roll every semester and to the Sun Belt Conference Academic Commissioner s List three consecutive years. Voted team captain entering his senior season, Eller overcame shoulder surgery following his freshman season to come back and be a solid three-year contributor for the ASU baseball program. A starter in all games last season, Eller was one of three players to start all 55 games in He led ASU with 19 multiple-hit games in 2008, including three-hit performances against Michigan State, Tennessee-Martin and Western Kentucky. In addition, he delivered a team-high 16 doubles and a batting average of.290 (third-highest on team). He ranked second on team with 62 runs scored and second on the team with 32 RBI s. Brandon had three home runs and one triple and led the team in 2007 with batting average of.347. He has started 114 of 115 games over the past two-plus seasons for ASU. BACK ON TRACK ON THE ROAD: With ASU s 2-1 series victory at ULM March 20-22, the Red Wolves captured their first series victory on the road since sweeping ULL to open conference play in the 2008 season. ASU PITCHING SHINES: The Red Wolves pitching staff enjoyed an outstanding weekend in the Sun Belt Conference opening series against Louisiana-Lafayette March 6-8. Nine Red Wolves saw action on the mound during the weekend and gave up just 15 hits in the three games combined. All 15 of the Ragin Cajun hits were singles and the effort helped hold ULL to only five total runs on the weekend - two of which were unearned. The Red Wolves posted a team ERA of 0.96 on the weekend and held the Cajuns to a.163 batting average. Senior Chase Ware got the weekend off to a strong start when he threw a complete-game shutout in the Friday night game, striking out nine batters to lead Arkansas State to a 2-0 victory. The Red Wolves continued to be strong on the mound in this week s midweek doubleheader against Harris-Stowe, giving up just three runs in the two games. FREE BASEBALL: Arkansas State has played seven extra-inning games this season, going 4-3 in those contests. Arkansas State defeated Texas State 4-3 in the season opener and closed out the Sun Belt Conference series with Louisiana-Lafayette two weeks ago with a 3-2 win to clinch the series. The Red Wolves dropped their first extra-innings game of the season when they fell 10-8 Friday night in the series opener at Middle Tennessee State. The Red Wolves defeated ULM 6-4 March 21 in extra innings before falling 10-8 in the series finale at ULM March 22. Arkansas State rallied to beat Memphis 8-7, March 8 in extra innings, then fell to Western Kentucky 3-2 April 17. All of ASU s extra-inning games were 10-inning affairs with the exception of of the 10-8 loss at ULM, which went 11 innings. OPENING WITH SUCCESS: The 61st season of Arkansas State baseball got underway Feb. 20, with ASU picking up a 4-3 victory over Texas State to earn its first season-opening victory since the 2006 season. First-year head coach Tommy Raffo became the fourth A-State baseball coach to pick up a victory in his coaching debut. MORE OPENING SUCCESS: With its victory over SIU-Edwardsville Feb. 27, Arkansas State won its home opener for the 19th consecutive season, scoring the most runs in a single game since defeating Western Kentucky 21-4 during the 2006 season. OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION: After scoring 11 runs combined in its first four games, Arkansas State exploded for 11 runs in the fifth inning of its victory over Southern-Illinois Edwardsville Feb. 27. Senior Brandon Eller and sophomores Todd Baumgartner and Murray Watts all hit home runs in the frame, with Eller and Baumgartner unleashing three-run shots. Arkansas State finished the game with 19 hits as 22 players made appearances at the plate. CHASING SUCCESS: Arkansas State senior pitcher Chase Ware has been named to the All-Sun Belt Conference Preseason Baseball Team, the league announced Feb. 10. Ware was one of two starting pitchers named to the preseason all-conference team as voted on by all 11 head coaches from across the Sun Belt Conference. Louisiana-Monroe shortstop Ben Soignier was named the league s Preseason Player of the Year, while Western Kentucky s Matt Ridings was named Preseason Pitcher of the Year and also earned all-conference honors as a starting pitcher along with Ware. Western Kentucky was the preseason favorite to win the Sun Belt title, while Arkansas State was voted 10th. A two-time Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week during the 2008 season, Ware earned second-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors as a junior after posting an ERA of 3.57 the third lowest of any pitcher in the league. Despite finishing the season at 5-6, Ware was one of the most effective pitchers in the Sun Belt Conference during the 2008 season. In 85.2 innings pitched, which was the third most of any pitcher in the conference, 2009 A-State Baseball 4

5 Ware gave up just 34 earned runs on 84 hits. He struck out 67 opposing batters while walking 26. We are extremely happy that Chase has been named to the preseason all-conference team, said ASU Head Coach Tommy Raffo. It is an honor for Chase and our entire program. We expect Chase to be an integral part of our weekend rotation and this honor certainly reinforces the expectations we have for him during the upcoming season. The Sun Belt Conference preseason team was the second such honor the pound right-hander from Southaven, Miss. has earned heading into the 2009 season. Ware was also named to the Rivals.com preseason All-Sun Belt Team in late January. Last season, Ware was named the league s player of the week after throwing a complete-game shutout at Louisiana-Lafayette Mar. 8, and earned the honor again after giving up one earned run while striking out seven batters in ASU s 8-2 win at Florida Atlantic May 9. He struck out a season-high 10 batters May 15 against Arkansas-Little Rock in his final appearance of the year. NEW ERA AT ASU: The season is the first season in which Arkansas State University will compete as the Red Wolves. After 77 years of competition as the Indians, the Red Wolves mascot was adopted in January 2008 after many hours of work by the University s Mascot Selection Steering Committee. The job of the committee was to make a new mascot recommendation to Chancellor Dr. Robert L. Potts and the University administration. The committee recommended Wolves at a Jan. 31 meeting, and the Red Wolves mascot evolved from that point. Tournament and Conference MVP. MALATESTA INKS WITH ASU: Arkansas State Head Coach Tommy Raffo announced May 4 that Phillip Malatesta (Oxford, Miss.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his baseball career at ASU. Malatesta, a right-handed pitcher and outfielder, is a four-year player at Oxford High School, starting at pitcher for the two years. Malatesta was selected to play in the Crossroads Diamond Club High School All-Star Game and finished the season at 11-0 with an ERA of In 64.2 innings of work, he gave up just 26 runs on 43 hits, with 22 walks and 88 strikeouts. We are very excited about adding Phillip Malatesta to the Red Wolves baseball family, said ASU Head Coach Tommy Raffo. He has very good command of the strike zone and we think he can be a major contributor for us in Sun Belt Conference play. He is currently 6-1 on the season with an ERA of 2.50, recording 52 strikeouts in 46.1 innings of work. Larry Templeton, Former Director of Athletics (Mississippi State) and Chairman, NCAA Baseball Tournament Selection Committee Tommy Raffo was named Arkansas State's fifth head coach on July 1, Raffo comes to Jonesboro with 14 years as an assistant coach at Mississippi State University under his belt. He served as the hitting and outfield coach for a Bulldog program that made three trips to the College World Series. "We are extremely pleased to hire a coach with the background and experience of competing at the highest level that Tommy Raffo brings," said ASU Director of Athletics, Dr. Dean Lee. "We had an extremely strong pool of candidates for this position, and feel that Coach Raffo was unquestionably the best fit to take over the Arkansas State baseball program. Tommy is highly respected in the coaching field for his integrity and for his superior knowledge of the game." During his 14 seasons at Mississippi State, Raffo served as the recruiting coordinator for the Bulldog baseball program, landing 10 straight recruiting classes ranked in the top 33 nationally by Collegiate Baseball. He coached seven All-America players and four Academic All-Americans. He was named as the 2007 Southeastern Conference Fellowship of Christian Athletes Coach of the Year, and during his time at MSU, 49 Bulldogs were chosen in the Major League Baseball Draft. Raffo's outstanding recruiting at MSU paid dividends for the program as he helped the Bulldogs reach the SEC Tournament 12 times, with two championships to their credit. Mississippi State also made 11 appearances in the NCAA Tournament during Raffo's time with the program, winning five regional titles. The Bulldogs made three appearances in the NCAA Super Regionals and advanced to the College World Series in 1997, 1998 and Raffo coached one Johnny Bench Award winner, given annually to the top college catcher in the country, and helped seven hitters finish the season in the SEC's top five batting averages. As a player, Raffo was co-captain of the 1990 Mississippi State team that advanced to the College World Series. He was a two-time Academic All-American and a three-time Academic All-SEC selection. He was named first-team All- SEC in 1989 and 1990, and in 1990 earned second-team All-America honors from both the American Baseball Coaches Association and Baseball America. "My family and I are extremely excited about this opportunity," said Raffo. "Since my first visit, I was impressed by the campus, by the city of Jonesboro, but most importantly, by the people. There is an energy at Arkansas State that I did not expect. What a special time for ASU baseball. Every person I meet is enthusiastic about the leadership on campus and the direction our baseball program is headed. I can't wait to lead and be a part of it." After earning his Bachelor's of Business Administration Degree from Mississippi State in 1990, Raffo was chosen by the Miami Miracle with the first pick of the eighth round in the 1990 MLB Draft. While playing in the Reds organization, he was the MVP of the 1991 South Atlantic League All- Star Game, and was Co-Captain of the 1992 Midwest League Champion Cedar Rapid Reds.
