1 Newsletter September 2018 Vol. 16, No. 9 My St. Mark s family- As I hope everyone knows, our vision for ministry here at St. Mark s is to Equip Caring Courageous Disciples for the work our Lord sets out for us. But have you ever thought about how we do that? How do we equip each other to serve Christ in caring and courageous ways? We are going to be spending the rest of the fall focusing on how we can live in to that vision- both as a church and as individuals. One of the ways that John Wesley helped the early Methodists grow spiritually was to encourage them to be a part of a small group. Right now, we are learning lessons of discipleship from the first Christian small group- The 12 Disciples. Take a look at the small groups we will be starting or re-starting in September. Which one is right for you? Then, October will be Missions Month at St. Mark s. We will all be challenged to participate in a mission of St. Mark s in some way, large or small. Everyone will have a chance to serve and support our missions, locally and around the world! 2 news announcements news announcements news Our Sunday School lesson this week includes this Theme Statement: We have been baptized into the death and resurrection of Christ. Because of this, we are called to a life that rejects harmful and destructive ways of relating to others. We are bound together in the community of God s people where social divisions are being overcome, and we practice patterns of forgiveness and love. For all of this, we give thanks to God. As we know first hand, this statement isn t always easy to practice. Our growing, thriving community of believers faces challenges every day in getting along with each other. There is a workshop being offered by our Roanoke District on September 29 for clergy and laity in all ministry areas that is very appropriate to this topic. WHY: Church is one of the only places where up to five generations converge on a regular basis. This poses a unique opportunity for faith transference, as well as a challenge to effectively communicate and to create a culture that engages all ages and stages in meaningful faith community. WHEN: Saturday, 9/29/18, 8:30 am--4:00 pm. WHERE: Greene Memorial UMC COST: $10, including lunch. Ironically, it is the same Saturday as our big meal packing event, which is the best example of something we do that includes all generations in the great mission of feeding the world. It isn t an easy choice to make, but I plan to go to this leadership training event believing that we might just learn something that will help us move forward into tomorrow as caring courageous disciples. It would be nice to have others to go with me, so let me know if you also choose to do this workshop. The deadline for registering is September 24. You can call me if you want more details ( or ). We now have a team who would love to share the sacrament with you. Contact Pastor Justin. 2 Financial Update The wonderful missions and ministries of St. Mark's are only possible because of your support! Through the end of June, St. Mark s YTD receipts were $193,523. The YTD expenses were $210,690. This leaves a shortfall of $17,168. Let s all do our part to help meet our expenses. Women s Daytime Bible Study We will be studying the Miracles of Jesus. We will be meeting Tuesdays at in St. Mark s sanctuary. Please contact Patricia Lightner ( ) for more information. Scrapbook Fellowship Our next Scrapbook Fellowship will be Thursday, September 20th from 9 am-2 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Bring your own lunch and snacks. Fifth Sunday Fellowship Mark your calendars now for our Church Family Movie/Pizza Night on Sunday, September 30th at 5 pm in the Family Life Center! We will be watching the movie The Greatest Showman (Rated PG)! Everyone is encouraged to wear pajamas and slippers and bring a blanket if you would like! Besides pizza and drinks, we will have ice cream sundaes and popcorn too! Suggested donation is $2 per person or a maximum of $10/family for the pizza. Prayer Chain We have 60 faithful people serving on the St. Marks Prayer Chain. 3 news announcements news announcements news Gun Violence Prevention Forum Six members of this group from St. Marks had the privilege of attending the March for Our Lives forum in Blacksburg on August 2. Several students from Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL provided moderator/panel duties along with about ten other young people from around the country including four local area young people. It was very heart-warming and uplifting to listen to these intelligent and articulate young people. Their testimonies, comments, and suggestions were positive and uplifting and made us all very proud of what the younger generation is working to accomplish. If you would like additional information regarding this very worthwhile project, contact Mary Ward, or Diane Glazebrook, Safe Sanctuaries Training A Safe Sanctuaries training will be held in the Fellowship Hall on September 6th at 6:30 pm. This training will be held hand-in-hand with a FROG and Tadpole leader meeting. If you are planning on joining the training and/or the FROG leader meeting please contact Lee Ann at LeeAnnCritz@yahoo.com A support group for ladies 5th grade -12th grade along with their moms & up to age 120 welcomes all to Career Day. Pizza will be provided. We will have the opportunity to hear from multiple ladies of St. Mark's about their careers. Come learn about their education and how they balance home and church while contributing to the work force. On October 7, we will meet in the FLC at 12:15. Please RSVP by October 1 to Becky Gay at reach2sky14@gmail.com Counseling There are many ways we have the opportunity to support one another. One way that St. Mark's is serving is by offering free counseling on a monthly basis. Wanda Osburn, a licensed counselor and a member of St. Mark's is now offering counseling. You may contact Wanda via her wosburn1971@gmail.com to make an appointment. 3 Blood Drive Coordinator Needed About five years ago St. Mark s started hosting a Red Cross blood drive. A gentleman from the Red Cross came to give a program at a United Methodist Women s meeting on the importance of blood donations. We decided to sponsor a blood drive and since then we have been having drives about every other month. A person can donate blood every 56 days so we schedule them so that a person that donates at our drive can donate again at our next drive. I became blood drive coordinator at St. Mark s soon after we started. I have enjoyed doing it and have met some nice people that come to donate. I would like to step down and would like for someone else take my place. If no one is willing to do it, I will have to ask the Red Cross not to schedule any drives after November. It is not difficult and if anyone is interested I would like them to come to the drive on September 15 and see how simple it is. You don t even have to donate blood. The main responsibility is to have the Family Life Center open by the time the Red Cross truck gets to the church at around 9:00 am and set up a few tables and chairs. After the drive is over around 4:00 pm put the tables away and lock up the building. Some of our St. Mark s people have been faithful in volunteering to help with such things as running the canteen to give the blood donors a snack when they have finished and registering the donors as they come in. Nancy Craft St. Mark s Blood Drive Saturday, September 15th pm Did you know? The blood used in an emergency is already on the shelves before the event occurs. More than 1.6 million people were diagnosed with cancer last year. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment. A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood. Please consider stopping by to donate a pint of blood. Volunteers are always needed to help with the blood drive. 4 news announcements news announcements news Kroger Community Rewards St. Mark s has a new account number (TE560). The old number will still be associated with St. Mark s, but new enrollees will have to use the new number. There is no longer a need to re-enroll every August. We have about 59 households enrolled and receive around 5-6 hundred dollars quarterly from their shopping at Kroger which goes into St. Mark s building fund. If you too would like to help out go to your Kroger account and click on the Community Cares Program. Click on enroll. It is easier to enter our church number TE560 instead of the church name when designating the beneficiary for the use of your Kroger rewards card. If you have any questions or problems contact Julia Greer at or see her at church. Joyful Journey Travel News Spaces are still available for the 1 day trip to D. C. to visit the Museum of the Bible. The cost of $75 covers the bus, driver's tip, and museum fee. The bus will leave St. Mark's at 6:30 am on Oct. 26 and return before 10:00 pm. Either eat breakfast before boarding the bus or bring something to eat on the bus. You may bring a lunch to eat before going into the museum or food and drinks may be purchased in the museum (they are very expensive). We will stop for dinner on the way back to the church. There will also be several rest stops coming and going. Sign up on the bulletin board across from the choir room. Payment in full is due by Oct. 5. Make checks payable to the Joyful Journey Travel Club and return them to St. Mark's. Spaces are also available for the Wohlfhart Haus Christmas program and meal on Dec. 11. Love, The Koloda Family United Methodist Women Sunday Candle Burning Service September 16, 2018 As part of UMW Sunday, we will include our annual Candle Burning that reflects United Methodist Women s total cost of mission work around the world. In 2018, this will be: $18,921,600. During our service, we will light a candle to recommit ourselves to spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. If you would like to make a contribution to Missions -- In Honor or Memory of someone special to you -- please complete the envelope in the Narthex and return to Mona Tolley or drop in the offering place by Sunday, September 9. Please make checks payable to St. Mark s UMW. The names will be printed in the bulletin on Sunday, September and the candle will burn during the service reflecting the amount received. In 2017, we received $373 for this mission work. The UMW will be meeting September 10th at 7 pm. We will have Ann Seddon speak to us on climate justice. Her talk will include ways to take care of our environment and ideas to help us. She will also share some results of not doing so. We hope to see you there. UMW Reading Program Calling all readers! If you are keeping a list of the books you have read then please get them to Karen Sledd. Karen will be turning in the reading report for the year this month. We hope that you continue to read the UMW books that are books with a purpose to inform, uplift, and also entertain. New books from the 2019 list have been ordered. The titles are The Same Sky, When Did Everyone Else Get So Old? and Eleanor, A Spiritual Biography. Anyone in the congregation is welcome to check out a book from the UMW library in the bride s room. Sign out your selection in the large binder and return when finished.

5 news announcements news announcements news News from TAME Mark your calendars for the annual Rise Against Hunger Meal Packing Event September 29th: Join us as we pack about 30,000 meals with Rise Against Hunger to be sent to food insecure countries around the world! These meals are a link in the chain that helps to break the cycle of poverty. We need people to help us set up tables and stations, pack meals, and to volunteer in the nursery. On September 9th sign up sheets will be in the sanctuary and in the family life center for you to sign up where ever you feel called! We have been working with Rise Against Hunger (formerly Stop Hunger Now) for many many years and several months ago we received an from a Daleville native who has been working with children in Haiti. The school in which he works receives these meals in order to feed their students and he was excited to see boxes from St Mark s UMC in Daleville. He was generous enough to send us pictures of the school and students who benefit from the meals we pack. How wonderful an opportunity we have to see the beautiful faces of healthy students who are blessed by our efforts. Thank you so much to those who have taken a Saturday to pack meals and for those who plan to come at the end of the month! 5

6 news announcements news announcements news CHILDREN'S MINISTRIES DOWN AT THE POND JUMP INTO A NEW YEAR OF F.R.O.G.s AND TADPOLES! FROGs and Tadpoles will begin a new year on Sunday, September 9th from 5 to 7 pm! Tadpoles are preschool aged children, 3 and 4 years old. FROGs will be divided into Younger Elementary (Kindergarteners through 2nd graders) and Older Elementary (3rd through 5th graders). Please come and bring a friend! The program will be held the 2nd and 4th Sundays of most months during the school year and will include Children's Choir practices, a lesson or mission project. Dinner will be provided. Please fill out a Registration Form for each child attending the program and return it to the church office by the first night the child attends. If your contact information has not changed, there is no need to fill out another form. Registration forms are available in the Narthex. Anyone interested in helping with this exciting discipleship ministry, please contact Lee Ann! There will be a brief organizational meeting for all Tadpole and FROG leaders on Thursday, September 6th at 6:30, followed by a Safe Sanctuaries Training for those who have not been trained in the past 3 years. 7 youth news youth news Birthdays Anniversaries Youth Events and News: Hello All Youth, Parents, Volunteers and Supporters! We have kicked off the school year in a blast with Hot Mess and had an awesome group of 6th graders move up and join us in Shipyard Youth! We are very excited for all that we have in store for September and our schedule is as follows! Sunday School is from to 10:45 am and we will be starting our new series The Wisdom of Pixar the Animated look at Virtue, and Unwind from the Grind every Wednesday from to 7 pm We will begin meeting at the church as we start this new time and discuss what activities we want to do on Wednesdays throughout the month for Octobers Unwind from the Grind! September 2nd. We will not be having youth on September the 2nd enjoy time with your families on Labor Day Weekend! September 9th we will be kicking off our new time of 5 pm -7 pm as the same time as Frogs and Tadpoles. Dinner will be provided as we will begin talking about emojis of the bible and prayer!! September 16th will be our Monthly Mission as we will be going across the street and doing a window washing at Kroger so we can Spread the Love and shoppers will leave being able to See God More Clearly after they leave. This will also be from 5 to 7 at the Kroger across from the church but we will meet at the church to start!! September 23rd we will be back at the church ready to discuss emojis of the bible from 5 pm to 7 pm and dinner will be provided it will be sure to put a smile on your face!! Sunday September 30th we will not have youth but instead we invite everyone to come to the churches 5th Sunday fellowship movie night! See the ad on page 6. Come bring a friend!
