1 Newsletter August 2019 Vol. 17, No. 8 My St. Mark s Family, All you have to do is look at the movies or the fall TV schedule to see that we love heroes! Super-heroes are everywhere! Superman, Spiderman, and all the Avengers seem to dominate our entertainment. We love the stories of people overcoming impossible challenges! Our heroes of faith are even more inspiring! We hear the stories of Abraham and Sarah, Joseph and Esther. We learn about our own faith journeys from the disciples, who do miracles in Jesus name! This summer, we ve been walking with David. His incredible relationship with God has taught us so much about the relationship with our creator that each of us can have. But what about some lessor known stories about our amazing God and the people who have followed in faith? We re going to be spending the month of August learning about some Unsung Heroes of the Bible. They may not be as famous as Peter, or written letters like Paul- but they show us that God uses ordinary people for His extraordinary purposes. And God can use YOU! 2 news announcements news announcements news August, 2019 Hi friends, I admit it! I m struggling over what to write this month! No catch phrases or devotional thoughts are running around in my head as I face the deadline to submit something to Becky. In pondering why nothing is popping into my brain, I m realizing I ve taken a break this month from my normal routine of worship, study & prayer time. Oh, I ve been in church and prayed as I traveled to reunion with my siblings, visit a very sick friend and then to enjoy a granddaughter s play, but not in any intentional structured way. My Bible has gone with me in the car, but it hasn t opened itself to send me messages. The same is true of my devotional book that has been in my suitcase. A closed book doesn t say much to my spirit. Now that I need to share an encouraging message, I m coming up dry! The lesson: God is our source of power, so to be a caring courageous disciple I need to stay plugged in to the power source. In trying to run on stored up spiritual energy, my battery has run out!! It s time to recharge! May the good Lord be with all of us every day!! Peggy Lootens, Lay Leader Back to School Blast!! Join as we serve like Jesus! On August 10th a team from St Mark's will be heading over to Parkway Church on the Mountain in order to serve at the Roanoke Rescue Mission's Back 2 School Blast! The Back 2 School Blast ministers to students in the Roanoke area who are under-served by providing school supplies, check-ups and new shoes! Through your generosity and God's grace St. Mark's is able, once again, to be the shoe sponsor! The saints of St Mark's will go to Parkway in order to remove old shoes and socks from children, pray for their new school year and all that comes with it, and give them brand new shoes and socks to start school! This service opportunity is for people who are 18 and over. Please sign up for this holy event! That is the question that our Finance team has been working on regarding the Family Life Center mortgage. At the end of this year, the "Sharing the Mission" capital campaign will draw to a close. Over the last 7 years, our congregation has faithfully paid down our mortgage on the Family Life Center from approximately $1.8 million to just under $750,000. Praise God!! This is a fantastic testimony of working together toward God's goals! So what's next? We'll be having 2 information sessions in August to share our plans, answer questions, and invite you to be a part of the next phase: Sunday, Aug 18 at noon (after the 11 am worship service) and Tuesday, Aug 20 at 7 pm. We especially encourage member and friends who have come to St. Mark's since 2016 to attend. Feel free to see Pastor Justin with questions. Lunch and Learn LOA S next LUNCH & LEARN will be held at LEWS Restaurant on Tuesday, August 6th at 11 am. Call Brenda Willis at if you are interested in becoming a member of this group or just want to come once as a guest to check it out! TAME News TAME stands for That All May Eat. Our Rise Against Hunger Packing Project is on September 21st. Save the date to help us pack that day and invite your friends and neighbors to help. Look for a sign-up sheet towards the end of August. The TAME Ministry will be selling St. Mark s Christmas ornaments this year to help raise money for hunger needs. The ornaments are a 50th Anniversary of the Church Commemorative Ornament. Look for those in the fall at our 50th Anniversary Celebration. Women s Evening Bible Study Women s Thursday Evening Bible Study continues to meet at 7 pm each week at the home of Edna Nicely. Scrapbook Fellowship Scrapbook Fellowship: The next Scrapbook Fellowship will be Thursday, August 15th from 9 am-2 pm. Bring your own lunch and fellowship with other scrappers. For more information, contact Susan Wagner susanbwagner59@gmail.com Adult Fellowship Luncheon Adults of all ages are invited and most welcome to join us this Wednesday, August 7th at 11:30 am, as we meet at Bellacino s here in Daleville, to enjoy a meal and Christian fellowship. This is a great way to meet and make new friends at St. Mark s! Can You Help?? Our St. Mark s Christmas Fair is in need of a chairman or co-chairman for the kitchen. Please consider stepping up to fill this position as sales from the kitchen bring in almost $1000 for the Building Fund. Scouting is gearing up for Fall! St. Mark s Cub Scout Pack 211 invites Elementary School age children with their parents and interested adults to an open house August 6, 5:45-6:45 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Cub Scouts works with parents to instill strong character, good citizenship, and physical fitness in boys and girls. With lots of fun and friendship along the way! Each grade has age appropriate activities that include family camping, hikes, fishing, pinewood derby cars, one square foot hike, first aid, and using simple tools. Join Pack 211 and get in on the adventure of learning, sharing, and having fun together that only scouting can offer!! Don t have kids in school 3 but still want to help? The Pack needs adult leaders and helpers to make for the best program possible for the Scouts. Please contact Gilbert Armour, or gdarmour@comcast.net for more information. St. Mark s Scouts BSA Troop 211 invites parents of Middle School age children to an information meeting August 6, 7-8:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Scouts BSA provides fun, adventure, learning, challenge, and responsibility to help boys and girls become the best version of themselves. August and September A support group for rising 5th - 12th grade girls, their moms and ladies through 120. Hope everyone has had new experiences and fun memories made this summer. On August 10, at 11 am, you are invited to get in one last summer splash at Randolph Park in Dublin. The group cost is $5 a person. The park has a picnic shelter that allows a cooler of home packed lunches. Due to their full service concession, restaurant food is not allowed at pool shelter. Please RSVP to Becky Gay at reach2sky14@gmail.com by August 1. A support group for new 5th graders and up with their moms. The teen years bring changes for parents also. This group is a great place to meet others and a place for girls to focus on following their path. In OUR HOMETOWN, we serve our community. Join us on September 14, 10 am at Carrington Place for games with the residents. Please RSVP to Becky by September 7. The St. Marks Methodist men will meet Wednesday, August 14th at 5 pm at Dave Hamblin's house for a picnic. Dinner will include "Bar B Que by Dave". All members of the men's group are welcome as well as anyone interested in learning more about the group. If you plan to attend, please bring a chair.

4 news announcements news announcements news The United Methodist Women will have our Annual Dinner Out on Monday, August 12th at 6 pm. We have reservations at O Charley s at Valley View. There will be no business meeting just a time for fellowship and fun! United Methodist Women is open to all women of the church come join us. We do need a head-count for the restaurant. Please let Patricia Lightner know by Sunday, August 11th if you plan to attend. Sign up sheet is on the bulletin board. Cost is $74 per person. NEW ALASKA CRUISE LAND TOUR June 11-22, 2020 Brochures with details are on the bulletin board across from the choir room. The registration form is on the bottom of the 1st page of the brochure. Your name must be exactly as it appears on your passport. A $250 deposit is due with your registration form. This is part of the total price of the trip and is refundable up until the final payment is due. The cruise line is holding space for us until December 17, At that time, any space we do not have names or deposits on will be recalled. 5 Children s Ministries Children s Ministries Children's Ministries Galactic Blast VBS St. Mark s Vacation Bible School was held July 15th through 19th. What a ride through space and time! Many thanks to all those who donated items to be used in this VBS! You may pick up items in the large basket under the VBS bulletin board in the Narthex after July 25th. Thank you for sharing! Thanks also to those who have been keeping VBS in their prayers! Take a moment to look at our VBS pictures on the bulletin board in the Narthex! Sixty children attended and with volunteers, we had over 100+ people in attendance each day! Our mission projects included collecting school supplies for the Roanoke Rescue Mission s Back-2-School Blast and $ in donations for T.A.M.E. The children also raised $180 for Back Pack Buddies by memorizing VBS scriptures! An anonymous donor is giving $1 for every scripture the children memorized! Many thanks to all those who generously donated to our VBS mission projects! We want to recognize and thank all the men, women and youth of VBS. How exciting it was that each of these folks had the opportunity to bring children closer to God through Jesus Christ! These people were truly missionaries of St. Mark s, as they ministered to the children of this church and of our community! Thank you for sharing your time and talents for this important ministry! Bible Presentations The church will be presenting a Children s NRSV Bible to those children who will be in 3rd grade this school year, on Sunday, August 4th during the three Worship Services. These are the Bibles we will be using as we move forward both in The Garden and in FROGs. Your child is invited to take this Bible home with them, read it daily and return to St. Mark's each week with it. Children who bring their Bibles with them to The Garden and FROGs will receive a FROG dollar each time they bring their Bible to church! Blessing of the Backpacks! All children and youth are invited to bring their backpack to one of the three Worship Services on August 4th, for a special blessing for the new school year! Please come, bring your backpack and bring a friend! Promotion Sunday Promotion Sunday will be Sunday, August 4th! That Sunday, all children, age 3 by September 30th and toilet trained, will move up to the Preschool Sunday School class. Those heading to Kindergarten this school year will move downstairs to The Garden: Where Disciples Grow in room 101, The Gathering room. New middle schoolers in sixth grade will move into the Youth Sunday School room. This is a great time to start your child or youth in Sunday School! Sunday School; it s for life! Acolyte Training! St. Mark s is in great need of Acolytes for both the 8:30 and 11:00 Worship Services! All children and youth, 4th grade through 12th grade, are invited to Acolyte training on Sunday, August 25th after the 11:00 Worship Service is over. A Pizza Lunch will be provided in the Fellowship Hall at 12:30, so please let Miss Lee Ann know that you are coming by Friday, August 23rd. Serving as an Acolyte is an important way you can fulfill the commitment you made/will make to the church through confirmation! If you have already been trained, but have not served in a while, please prayerfully consider doing so. Your church needs you!

6 youth news youth news Birthdays Anniversaries Youth Events and News: July has been a wonderful summer month for Shipyard Youth. We had some last minute changes, some wonderful time together, and we ve continued to grow in our faith. We re looking forward to finishing out summer on a high note before those dreaded words no child wants to hear: Back to School! June 30th was our Youth Sunday. We d like to give a shout out to all of those that participated, shared their experiences, and made this whole Sunday (all 3 services!!!!) possible. We love you and are continually praying for you!! On to August: August 4 HOT MESS!!!! It s time for everyone s hottest, messiest, and favoritest day! We ll be having our messiest yard games to kick off our new school year and welcome our new 6th graders. Come prepared to get wet, get messy, and have a lot of great fellowship! August 11 Car Wash Fundraiser! We were messy, now it s time to get clean. Come out and enjoy the time together and help us raise money for the upcoming year. August 18 We ll be keeping things fun with a Cooking Class at the church! We will put together a menu and ingredients, learn how to make it them tasty, and then enjoy a meal together after our laborious evening! August 25 As most will be (ugh) Back to School, we ll be continuing our fun month with Real Life Clue. We will need adults to dress up as characters, as well as people to figure out whodunnit! Fun for the whole family! As always, thank you for your constant support and love of these wonderful people. The growth and excitement they have for their ministry is inspiring!
