Project Description, application to the Norwegian Research Council 2008 Acronyme: GENESCAPE FARMED COD SPAWNING IN NET PENS: OFFSPRING RECRUITMENT UNDER NATURAL CONDITIONS AND INTERBREEDING WITH WILD LOCAL STOCK Responsible applicant: Institute of Marine Research (IMR), Bergen. Project manager: Principal scientist Knut E. Jørstad, IMR Research Group Population Genetics and Ecology Project team: Knut E. Jørstad, Terje van der Meeren, Terje Svåsand, and Anders Thorsen
PROJECT OBJECTIVES As described above the spawning experiments conducted have clearly demonstrated that spawning of farmed cod do take place in net pens and result in viable offspring, as detected for the larvae stage. A similar spawning experiment is also planned for in 2008 as part of Institute program. The main focus of this proposed project, however, is to investigate the performance of existing farmed offspring in the Heimarkspollen system with regards to recruitment to spawning population and the extent of spawning success, including interbreeding with the wild cod. Thus the main hypotheses of the new project is offspring from farmed cod spawning in net pens are viable in the wild environment and will recruit to spawning stage and interbreed with the wild, local cod population. This will be done by: Estimating the impact (abundance, frequency, geographical distribution) of farmed offspring in Heimarkspollen and adjacent waters. Carry out detailed performance comparisons of farmed and wild offspring during the recruitment period. Estimating the extent of recruitment of farmed cod offspring to the local cod spawning stock. Estimate spawning success of farmed offspring and potential interbreeding with local wild cod.

Vil larvene overleve?
