MCAS Standards Advanced: Comprehensive and in-depth understanding of rigorous subject matter (260-280) Proficient: Solid understanding of challenging subject matter (240-259) Needs Improvement: Partial understanding of subject matter (220-239) Warning: Minimal understanding of subject matter (200-219) 11
MCAS CHANGES NCLB Requirements Add New Tests. Board of Education Votes to Increase Competency Determination Standard. Board of Education Votes to Include a Science Test as part of the Competency Determination. DESE develops new data on student growth. 12
Composite Performance Index The CPI measures the extent to which students are progressing toward proficiency. CPI is a 100 point index that combines the scores of students who take the standard MCAS (proficiency index) with the scores of students who take the MCAS ALT (MCAS Alt Index) CPI is computed for each test. 13
Importance of CPI CPI is used to measure both performance and improvement Six Performance Rating Categories Improvement Gain Target CPI results: BHS CMS English 99.1 96.8 Math 98.9 90.6 Physics 96.7 14
Improvement Gain Target 100 (Goal) Baseline CPI Divided by Number of Remaining Cycles until 2014 Determines the amount of gain necessary for a group to remain on target 15
AYP Calculations A Participation Rate: 95% or greater in MCAS and MCAS -Alt + B Performance: 90.2 or Greater CPI in ELA 84.3 or Greater CPI in Math or C Improvement: Meet or Exceed 2009 Improvement Target (Specific to districts, schools, student groups) + D Grades 1-8 92% or higher Attendance Rate, or 1% improvement over 2007 High School 4-year graduation rate of 65% applied to 2008 cohort, or 5-year graduation rate of 70% applied to 2007 cohort, or 2 percentage increase in 4-year graduation rate from the 2007 cohort to the 2008 cohort A + (B or C) + D = AYP 16
New Growth Model Data Uses raw score on MCAS tests Requires two years of consecutive MCAS scores to see growth Measures how much a student s score changes relative to other students statewide with similar score histories from one year to the next Reported as a percentile score 17
New Growth Model Data Typical Student Growth Percentile (SGP) is between and 40% and 60%. Information is broken down by subject areas, gender, race, ethnicity, income, English language learners, students with disabilities, and Title 1. Belmont scores as high achievement with typical to high growth. 18
Glossary Participation Rate: 95% or greater Sub Group Participation: Minimum of 40 students and at least 5% of student body in grade tested Performance: 90.2 CPI in ELA and 84.3 CPI in math Improvement: Improvement targets are specific to districts, schools, and student groups Attendance: 92% rate for K-8; 65% hs graduation rate for 2008 cohort, or 5-year rate of 70% applied to 2007 cohort 19
Next Steps Review Test Data to Identify Students in Need of Support. Provide Study in Core Math Concepts to All Students. Provide Programs and Tutorials for Students in Need of MCAS Remediation. (English, math, science) Continue to Encourage Students to Participate in a Rigorous Course of Study. Provide Programs and Tutorials for ELL Focus on Student Sub Groups Use new Growth Data to refine curriculum and instruction 20
