Prosjekttittel: The High Arctic Large Igneous Province on Svalbard. Veileder: Romain Meyer Medveileder: Rolf B. Pedersen Mafic sills and other igneous rock formations are outcropping all over Svalbard, Franz Josef Land and are found in sedimentary basins in the North-Western Barents Sea. These igneous rocks form an integral part of a widespread Cretaceous igneous event in the High Arctic, which has been identified as a Large Igneous Province. On Svalbard these mafic diabase rocks compose the Diabasodden suite. Increased igneous rock records have been reported on Svalbard from the Eastern Svalbard Dolerite Belt and the Central Spitsbergen Dolerite Centre. While the Eastern Svalbard Dolerite Belt is more remote, the Central Spitsbergen Dolerite Centre is, due to the proximity to Longyearbyen, logistically easier to reach and includes magmatic bodies outcropping around inner Isfjorden, Sassenfjorden, Billefjorden and Dicksonfjorden. Collecting diabase samples from the Central Spitsbergen Dolerite Centre for major-/trace-element, and radiogenic isotopic geochemical work will be carried out, to try to characterize the mantle source, degree of partial melting, and degree of (crustal) contamination involved in petrogenetic history. Objectives of this project are: 1) Identify the geochemical and isotopic characteristics of the Svalbard dolerite magmas. 2) As a result, define the petrogenetic history of these melts. 3) Test the hypothesis of continental breakup due to hot spot interaction with Lithosphere and develop a coherent geodynamic model for the High Arctic Large Igneous Province formation. 4) Comparing our results with published data from the Lomonosov Ridge and the Gakkel Ridge will provide the opportunity to study the Arctic Ocean evolution over time. 5) This early geodynamic history of the Arctic Ocean in combination with data from the Norwegian margin are fundamental data, to shed light on causal relations between excess magmatism and the rift to drift transition. Prosjekttittel: The magmatic carbon cycle: CO 2 reservoirs and fluxes, and their significance to alkaline magma and mantle metasomatism. Veileder: Romain Meyer Medveileder: Rolf B. Pedersen Carbon is widely believed to be necessary for the development and maintenance of life. Terrestrial planets, with silicate mantles and metallic cores, obtained carbon compounds during accretion. CO 2 despite its relative shortage in terrestrial planets has a disproportional influence on the alkaline igneous rock genesis and mantle metasomatic processes. CO 2 not only lowers the mantle solidus line but dissolved CO 2 has the important ability to lower the magma density and viscosity substantially. The proposed project is a hybrid research, consisting of a numerical modelling and a classical petrology part. First you should examine theoretically the conditions allowing carbon to be stored in the mantle, the potential mantle reservoir(s) and the mantle degassing to its present state. The greatest fraction of the Earth s initial volatile budget is probably degassed into the atmosphere during the end of the early magma ocean solidification. This leaves probably only a small fraction to be involved into mantle metasomatism and degassing by recent volcanic activity. However, experimental petrology studies show that CO 2 plays a substantial role during alkaline magma generation faraway from subduction factories. To shed light on how the carbon reacts today in the mantle you should petrologically and geochemically investigate natural magmatic systems. Due to the fact, that effective CO 2 storage in the solid Earth mainly occurs by the formation of carbonates your research will focus on interactions between carbonate rocks and silicate melts as analogues. Both the expected numerical and petrological results will not only be beneficial for the igneous petrology and planetary community but also be foundation data for more applied studies as climate research, CO 2 storage, and natural hazard management.
