The electronic substance library at UiT CHESS - Chemical, Health, Environmental, Safety System
Substance library Sanctioned by law FOR 2000-04-14 nr 412: Regulation concerning the build up and use of records of chemical substances and products injurious to health at work (Stoffkartotekforskriften). All working places that store or use chemical substances and biological products injurious to health are subjected to this regulation.
The substance library at UiT Cover all chemicals and biological substances that are injurious to health in use at UiT with matching safety datasheet Paper records Electronic substance library
Substance library - Main goal The system is an important driving force in the work to prevent damage/injury Access to health and safety sheets of high standard Adjust use and storage of all substances injurious to health as safe as possible Survey of all substances injurious to health in use or stored at the various departments at UiT
Substance library - Main goal Forms the basis for lists of substances, reports and printouts for each location, for instance substances that from the R-phrase(s) are: toxic carcinogenic mutagenic cause sensitization flammable/explosive Replacement of all the most dangerous substances stored and used at UiT (duty of substitutions)

CHESS The Chemical, Health, Environmental, Safety System at UiT Bureau Veritas An application for compiling, presenting and distributing information about chemicals and how to handle them Comprises CHESS database and configuration the core of the substance register, physically located in Stavanger CHESS Web Module Risk Module Historic Archive Module
Historic Archive Module Replace of a safety data sheet automatically archive the old sheet Publishing documents automatically archive a public version Deletion of safety datasheets in archive sets a deleted flag Access require authorisation
Risk Module Access require authorisation Assessment of risk in CHESS is composed of grade of danger and grade of exponation: Grade of danger is set by the characteristics of the product represented by R-sentences in the safety datasheet Every R-sentence has a numeric value (1-5) that inform about the danger of the product Assessments are linked to a location (where the product is used), and a matrix for the risk is shown for every location
Chess Web Module Web address for the substance library: http://uit.no/poa/stoffer Gives employees and students access to the substance library and key HSE information Registration levels are established on the basis of the organisational structure, substances in use are registered under the various Faculties, Departments and user sites/locations At UiT we have more than 90 locations and nearly 10 000 different substances registered
Requirements for safety datasheets FOR 2008-05-30 nr 516: Forskrift om registrering, vurdering, godkjenning og begrensning av kjemikalier (REACH) The safety data sheet shall be dated and shall contain the following16 headings: 1. identification of the substance/preparation and of the company/undertaking 2. hazards identification 3. composition/information on ingredients (CAS-number) 4. first-aid measures 5. fire-fighting measures 6. accidental release measures 7. handling and storage 8. exposure controls/personal protection 9. physical and chemical properties 10. stability and reactivity 11. toxicological information 12. ecological information 13. disposal considerations 14. transport information 15. regulatory information 16. other information
Requirements for safety datasheets Suppliers shall update this information without delay on the following occasions: 1. As soon as new information which may affect the risk management measures, or new information on hazards becomes available 2. Once an authorisation has been granted or refused 3. Once a restriction has been imposed.

Instead of complaining: help improve it! Report to the substance library contact if: You buy/bring new substances You have a new updated HMS datasheet You detect lack of info in the substance library Assess the risk before you buy a new substance!
