Abelprisen The Abel Prize 2011
HISTORY OF THE ABEL PRIZE The Norwegian mathematician Sophus Lie (184299) was the first eager proponent of the idea of creating an international prize in honour of Niels Henrik Abel (180229). He gathered support to establish a fund to finance a quinquennial Abel Prize for outstanding work in the field of pure mathematics. Lie may have been inspired by the fact that Alfred Nobel s plans for annual awards, which he learnt of in 1897, lacked a prize in mathematics. Lie died in 1899, and the efforts to establish a fund languished. In connection with the centenary of Abel s birth in 1902, King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway took an interest in the idea of establishing a prize to honour Abel. Preparatory steps were taken, but in 1905 the union with Sweden was dissolved, and again the attempts to establish a prize came to nought. The old plans for a major international Abel Prize were dusted off almost a hundred years later in a meeting between Abel biographer Arild Stubhaug and Telenor group CEO Tormod Hermansen in August 2000. A working group was set up, and in May 2001 the proposal to establish an Abel Prize was submitted to the Norwegian Prime Minister. The government and the Storting approved the establishment of the prize, and in 2003 the first Abel Prize was awarded.

ABELS BIOgrafi ABEL S BIOgraphy ABELS MATEmatikk ABEL S MAThematics Niels Henrik Abel (18021829) vokste opp i Gjerstad i AustAgder. Niels Henrik Abel (18021829) grew up at Gjerstad in the southern Norwegian county of AustAgder. In 1815, he was accepted as a student at the Christiania Cathedral School, and his talent for mathematics was revealed. He started working on difficult mathematical problems, and at the age of 22 he published a proof for the insolvability of the general quintic equation. It has been said about Abel that he has left mathematicians something to keep them busy for five hundred years. Now two hundred years have passed, and the claim is still valid. In 1825, he was granted a scholarship to study abroad, and after a visit to Berlin, Abel reached Paris, the world s leading centre of mathematics in his day. Abel had reserved his most important work for the prestigious Academy in Paris. Unfortunately, the thesis was mislaid in the Academy and remained undiscovered till after his death. In May 1827, Abel returned to Norway. After a brief temporary post at the university, he went to visit his fiancé at Frolands verk in Norway, where he took seriously ill and died of tuberculosis on April 6, 1829. The treatise on transcendent functions with the celebrated addition theorem for elliptic integrals is per haps Abel s most important work. The treatise with its monumental generality and original approaches view became an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Abel called himself a geometer, but the strength of his work lies in the combination of geometry, algebra and analysis, manifested through the variety of mathematical concepts carrying his name; abelian groups, abelian surfaces, abelian functions. Abel s name is also inextricably tied to the insolvability of quintic equations. His proof from 1825 put an end to a centuriesold search for a formula, but it was also the start of a new development, with mathematical branches reaching all the way to current everyday problems.
