Kartlegging av snø og is på Svalbard med satellitt og UAV Eirik Malnes,K.A.Høgda, R. Storvold, I.Lauknes, J.Haarpaintner og B.Johansen NGF møte, Geilo, 10 september 2009
Vegetasjonskart over Svalbard Første satellittbaserte vegetasjonskart over Svalbard Landsat 5/7 bilder 30 m oppløsning
Averaged time for first snow free day and last snow free day on Svalbard for the period (2000-2008).
2007: Svalbard only with ASAR SAR Snow cover mapping also implemented for Svalbard
Multi-sensor measurements SAR Optical Snow cover map derved from ASAR (left) and multitemporal MODIS (right) from June 11, 2006. The SAR map displays dry snow as grey and melting snow in white
SWE målinger med Quikscat SWE: 2007
Isbre!
Multi-looked Envisat ASAR Wide swath over Nordaustlandet

CoRe H2O!

Mission phases!! Phase 1 (year 1 and 2): 3-day revisit! To advance the parameterisation of snow and ice processes in mesoscale atmospheric models, hydrological models, and land surface process models! To support the validation of data products and testing of process models at selected study sites Phase 2 (year 3+): 15-day revisit! To support development and validation of snow cover parameterizations in global circulation models, and continental scale hydrological models! To improve downscaling of the cryosphere components in climate models
Measurement principle: radar backscatter Main parameters relevant for snow backscatter:! Snow water equivalent! Grain size! Soil background signal! Liquid water content (if melting) Backscatter contributions: Volume, surface, and interaction terms
Dual-frequency, dualpolarisation backscatter!! To separate snow volume and soil signals, in order to retrieve SWE over a wide range of snow depths To compensate for grain size effects X-band (9.6 GHz) Ku-band (17.2 GHz) snow volume soil surface total backscatter Model calculations for SWE = 150 mm
Backscatter sensitivity to SWE!! A few campaigns demonstrated the backscatter sensitivity to SWE for different snow conditions The data are the basis for validation of theoretical backscatter models and development of retrieval algorithms HeliSnow SARAlps
Proof of retrieval concept and validation Standard error of estimate compared to independent insitu data: 7 mm SWE map for Kuparuk River, Alaska retrieved from Ku-band VV & VH, X-band VV & VH
Retrieval of snow accumulation on glaciers Based on the different scattering albedo of the background (frozen firn or ice) and the winter snow Proof of concept with low resolution QuikSCAT Kuband data over Greenland; calibration with station data! Dual-frequency data removes the need for calibration by ground data! High-resolution data are needed for glacier observations
UAV System for scientific observations and sampling. Operational platform Instruments and algorithms System and networking Applications! Satellite product validation! Infrastructure inspections! Operational monitoring (algae, vegetation, fauna, meteorology, hydrology, sea-ice, icebergs, oil-spill)! Civil Security
2008 August Campaign, Ny-Ålesund! 14 flights, 15 hours, longest 300 km Aug 14 flight Fram Strait, 6.0 E, 79.5 N Sea Surface Temperatures Air Temperature

Radar development -FFI!The Ku-band radar will be buildt at the Norwegian Defence research Institute (FFI)!FM CW dechirp on receive!ground resolution (Chirp Bandwidth) must be traded against PRF and flight altitude/swath width/speed -typically 1-5 m (cross track) for normal operations.!imu- the movement compensation data is critical and will be closely integrated with the un-focused SAR data C-band sounder in a GPR-configuration FFI C-band UAV sounder
UAV borne Ku-band SAR ESA project -need for Ku-band data for cal-val purposes FFI radar development & motion compensation Norut -SAR processor, UAV integration and demonstration
Konklusjon!
