From our Clergy Team In many ways it s hard to believe that it has been two months since our churches were designated as shrines by Bishop Zubik. From the perspective of the clergy, it has been two months of getting to know the parishioners and the histories of the parishes, as well as the daily celebration of the sacraments (with a few misreadings of the scheduled along the way mea culpa) and many fruitful conversations that inspire faith, hope and love in our hearts. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for your hospitality in welcoming us and for your honesty in sharing with us your thoughts about what can make our parishes and the shrine churches thrive. I think that it is important for us to continue to hear your thoughts, ideas, questions and concerns. To that end, we will be holding Town Hall meetings at each of the parishes in October. The dates and times are still being confirmed, but will most likely be around October 19-22, which is a Steelers bye week. There will be no formal agenda but rather a sharing of perspectives, an opportunity to get to know each other better, and time for questions and answers. I ll keep you posted in the bulletin about times and locations once the dates are set. Some exciting news is that we have already been scheduling a number of pilgrimage tours of the Shrines of Pittsburgh. Parishes from across the diocese are excited to visit the shrine churches and learn more about their history and significance, while also enjoy the neighborhood where they are located. Some of the shrines have docents who are trained to give tours of the churches and sitters who are present to provide hospitality and answer questions, and we would like to begin to expand this to all the shrines. If you would like to learn more about what is involved in being a docent at a particular shrine, please give me a call at 412-295-8876 or e-mail me at nvaskov@diopitt.org. In addition to the tours offered upon request, I also hope in the future that all of the shrines could have regularly scheduled tours on the weekends, as some already do. This would be a great opportunity to make our shrines accessible to locals and visitors alike. Once again, thank you for all the ways you make our parishes and the shrine churches such special places. Please continue to pray for the growth of our spiritual homes so that we can continue to give honor and praise to God, build each other up in joy and goodness, and reach out to those in need so that they may be afforded hope and know the mercy of God. TRIENNIAL CONVOCATION OF DIOCESAN PRIESTS Come Away and Rest: Retreat, Relax, and Renew is the theme of a convocation for all priest of the Diocese of Pittsburgh including the priests of our parishes beginning Monday, September 30, and concluding Thursday, October 3, 2019. The convocation to be held in Wheeling, West Virginia, is an opportunity for priest to join with Bishop David Zubik for spiritual renewal, pastoral and professional development, and priestly fraternity. Look for details in coming bulletins on how necessary pastoral services will be provided during the time our priests will be away from the parish. God bless! Fr. Nick

From the Sisters of Merciful Jesus "We found the treasure! We found the treasure!". Yes, the children had found not only prizes for their searching, but the True Treasure of our hearts, Jesus Christ. As the children gathered around the sanctuary after their treasure hunt in the church, they listened attentively as Sr. Emily explained the great treasure of God's love for us held in the Eucharist. It was a moment imaginably similar to that of Jesus being found in the temple among the teachers. With the event of Jesus in the temple (Luke 2:4152) as the focus for Day 2 of the Summer with Jesus and Mary program, kids, volunteers, and even a few explorative parents and grandparents got to visually travel to the massive Temple of Herod, the second temple built in the history of Jerusalem. A replica of the Temple's Holy of Holies, or most sacred area complete with menorah, a prayer rug, and samples of Earth from Jerusalem and water from the Jordan River helped to truly transport the children for the morning's lesson. Lisps of Hebrew filled the room when a traditional Jewish scroll was presented and all ages tried their best to read the scriptural message upon it. Eventually, everyone succumbed to song, gently chanting, "Baruch hashem Adonai..." the unofficial anthem for the week. Each child made their own scroll with a unique scripture verse on it to take home later. Following the afternoon treasure hunt in the church, Day 2 concluded with children, volunteers, and Sisters Emily & Pawla all gathered in the sanctuary, around the tabernacle praying the Divine Mercy chaplet. This was a perfect way to return in love the very gift and treasure of love that God gives to us in the Eucharist. Jesus knew where to find His Father's love. May He show us the way every time we see Him in church, most especially during the Mass. Jesus, teach me the way to the Father. Amen.
