3 Ventilation Tube Materials Fluoroplastics Fluoroplastics are polymers composed of carbon and fluorine atoms. They come from a variety of different resins and are used in a wide range of industrial, medical, and home applications. Teflon is the brand name of one of the more popular varieties of fluoroplastic. Fluoroplastics are highly regarded by otologists for their inertness, smoothness oftexture, and biocompatibility. Fluoroplastic parts are molded, machined from rods, or formed from tubing and sheeting. PacifiC PacifiC is Olympus trademark for a patented phosphorylcholine (PC) coating applied to fluoroplastic ventilation tubes. PC is a chemical group that occurs in membranes of all human cells and is zwitterionic in nature, meaning that it has both positive and negative charges that are within relatively close proximity. Consequently, PC groups tend to attract and bind large numbers of water molecules tightly around themselves, which makes it energetically unfavorable for other materials to interact. PacifiC is a unique coating that mimics the zwitterionic structure of natural membranes. When applied to medical devices, properties such as enhanced resistance to bacterial adhesion are conferred through this biomimicry. Silicon Silicone is a material that is commonly used in medical implants due to its compliancy and elasticity. It s known for its inertness, smoothness, and lack of tissue reaction. Polyethylene Polyethylene, composed of only carbon and hydrogen atoms, is a popular implant material used in a variety of microsurgery applications. Bioinertness and the ability to have smooth surfaces are two qualities that make polyethylene appropriate for otology implants. It is available in white and blue colors. Titanium Titanium (ASTM F 136) is used in many medical implants. It has excellent corrosion resistance and is well tolerated by tissue. The material is light weight and MRI compatible.

4 4 MYRINGOTOMY Ventilation Tube Materials Ultrasil Ultrasil is Olympus patented surface treatment applied to silicone ventilation tubes. The treatment involves bombarding the silicone with high-energy argon ions in order to improve its surface properties. As a result of the ionimplantation the surface of the silicone is smoothed and its critical surface tension is increased. These results, acting alone or in concert, may contribute to the minimally bioadhesive quality of the Ultrasil material. Stainless Steel Stainless steel (ASTM F 138, Grade 2) is a special quality implant-grade steel that has long been in use in medical implants. It has a balanced corrosion resistant chemistry and an extremely clean microstructure. Stainless steel parts are machined from rods. Wire made of this material is also used for many Olympus products. Micron Micron is Olympus patented finishing process for titanium implants. This proprietary chemical process not only smoothes the surface but also dulls it, which reduces glare.
