3 Sacraments & Prayers BAPTISM: Please contact the particular parish you intend to have your child baptized at for information on scheduling. Baptism Seminars are held quarterly on the second Sunday of the month at 3:00 p.m. at Most Holy Name School. September 8, 2019; December 8, 2019; March 8, 2020; June 14, MATRIMONY: Arrangements are to be made with a member of the clergy team six months in advance of the wedding date. SICK AND SHUTINS: The Sacraments are available to those who are unable to celebrate Mass due to sickness or age. To make arrangements for visitation to your home call the parish office. SACRAMENTAL SPONSOR: To be a Sacramental sponsor one must be a practicing Catholic and a registered member of a parish. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: CCD instruction is provided for kindergarten through 8th grade. 4 From our Clergy Team September has been a busy month in the Shrines of Pittsburgh and the month is only halfway over! Numerous tour groups have been coming through to experience our beautiful churches, with all the history and spirituality that they have to offer. In addition, they remain active parishes, with all of them hosting weddings or baptisms in the past few weeks. All of this adds to the life of our churches. A number of special events are coming up in the next few weeks that I want to let you know about. 125 th Anniversary of the Croatian Fraternal Union at Saint Nicholas Sunday, September 22 There will be a special Mass on Sunday, September 22 nd at 11:00am at St. Nicholas Croatian Church for the 125th Anniversary of the Croatian Fraternal Union of America. Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago will celebrate the Mass, together with a number of other priests. Music for Mass will be sung in Croatian and played on traditional instruments. We are honored that the President of Croatia, Hon. Kolinda GrabarKitarovic will be attending the Mass, as will several other guests from the Republic of Croatia. The Holy Rosary Society will be offering refreshments before and after Mass. The Mass is opened to all Parishioners and to the public. Healing Mass at Saint Anthony Chapel Sunday, September 29 There will be a special Mass on Sunday, September 29 th at 1:30pm at St. Anthony Chapel. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will also be conferred. In addition, blessings will be offered with the relics of the saints who are the patrons of those suffering from a variety of illnesses. All are welcome. Annual Novena to Saint Therese at Immaculate Heart of Mary September 27October 1 The annual novena to Saint Therese of Lisieux will be prayed and Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, September 27 th October 1 st. The full schedule can be found on the full page flyer in this week s bulletin. All are welcome to attend and ask Saint Therese, the Little Flower to intercede for you. TRIENNIAL CONVOCATION OF DIOCESAN PRIESTS From Monday, September 30 through Thursday, October 3, 2019, the priests of our parishes will join Bishop David Zubik and fellow priests for a convocation dedicated to spiritual renewal, pastoral and professional development, and priestly fellowship in the service of the Lord. The theme of the convocation is Come Away and Rest: Retreat, Relax, and Renew. Take some time to stop by and see us. Mass of Anointing September 29 The Sacrament of the Sick will be offered during a special Mass on Sunday, September 29 at 1:30 pm at St. Anthony s Chapel. This administration of the sacrament of the sick is offered for those Catholics who are experiencing physical ailments of a serious nature: those who will be undergoing surgery for serious reasons, the elderly who have become notably weakened even though no serious illness is present, those who are battling serious illnesses and have not been anointed recently, and children who have reached the age of reason and are seriously ill. The Ladies of Charity will offer bottles of Holy Water to take home for those who are attending. September 21 Mission Co-op Weekend MASS OF ANOINTING Next Sunday, we will have Fr. James Adeoye from The Catholic diocese of Ilorin speak at our Mass. His Diocese is located in the Southwestern part of Nigeria and has 25 parishes in an overwhelming Muslim majority State. The Catholic diocese of Ilorin will certainly appreciate your prayers and financial support so that we may continue to improve the desperate circumstances of those we serve by bringing them hope, healing and help through the Gospel. Our presentation will inform your parish communities about our ministry in a predominantly Islamic context. Education is one of its greatest means of evangelization. The diocese is convinced that education empowers and it is one of the greatest means of addressing the problems of poverty and violence in our world. Other programs include, feeding poor children in schools, providing clean drinking water to scores of people, sustaining the widows and orphanages amongst other things. 10 From the Sisters of Merciful Jesus "The third day was an exciting day as we journeyed through beautiful Israel to the Jordan River! The river where our Merciful Savior was baptized! The river where the heavens parted, the powerful voice of God was heard, and the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus! What a wonderful place! First of all, our travelers (the children) had to pass through customs. At that time their baptism date was in their passport. What an important date that was in their lives! We passed through the gates and all gathered in the beautiful " town" of Israel that the sisters had made with buildings and walls, scenery and little lightsso pretty! We looked at the giant carpet map of Israel and found the river Jordan. Then the lights dimmed and we were carried back to the Jordan as Jesus approached and humbled Himself to be baptized. The skies opened and the Holy Spirit descended (We had a flashlight and flapping paper dove!) We talked about the fruits of the Holy Spirit Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self Control. Sr. Emily passed out little bags of candy gummies that were "Fruits of the Holy Spirit"!! Tasty treats in fruit shapes with all the "fruits" listed on the package. Then we made flapping doves out of paper plates. The doves became the base of a mobile as we attached thin long ribbons with the "fruits" of the Spirit (Yellow paper flames of fire with "Love, Gentleness, Self Control ) written on them. We gathered in the activity area in a giant circle. Everyone was given a deflated balloon. We talked about how the piece of rubber was pretty and stretchy and small. The travelers closed their eyes and the helpers filled the center of their circle with 117 balloons! We heard how the Holy Spirit is like air invisible but powerful, able to transform and move something flat and lifelessjust like the air in the balloons! We saw how full and fun those filled balloons were. and the balloon games began. 7 colors of balloons, each color had a fruit of the Spirit written on it. Blue was Selfcontrol and we searched for all of the blues, then all the Gentleness pinks, and so forth Making big heaps. We filled empty plastic pools with different Fruit balloons, we batted them around. Fun powered by the Holy Spirit s air! Delicious lunch by Nikki and Lori, then soccer outside (Sister Pawla is VERY Good at soccer!) soccer free play until the small pool in the backyard was filled. We talked about how water is needed for life. It cleanses. It refreshes. That is why it was chosen as a symbol of what goes on in Baptism. We played water games. Another great snack and very cool craft before Divine Mercy prayers. We gave each child a small holy water font that they could hang in their own home! They spent some time beautifully and carefully decorating their new treasure." ClaireKist
