Likevekten vann-teg følger likningen Hx y = H 1+ H-1 x = ( ) ; 7 a) Finn minimum mengde strippegass V som trengs for separasjonen. Hint: variabeltransformasjon. 1

Hvordan defineres likevektsfordelingskoeffisienten, K? b) N A uttrykker fluksen av komponent A. Sett opp uttrykket for fluksen når komponent A transporteres fra pkt.1 til pkt.2 i væskesystemet i figur a). Gitt: Gitt: Fødestrøm røykgass: 1000 m 3 (STP)/h Sammensetning røykgass (forenklet): 10 vol% CO 2, 90 vol% N 2 Trykk fødeside: 20 bar permeatside: 1 bar Fluks (P A /l) for CO 2 : 0,3 m 3 (STP)/(m 2 h bar), Selektivitet ( ) for CO 2 /N 2 : 250 Likning gasseparasjon: q qp y A p æp ö A = = ç ( phx0 -ply p ) Am A çè m l [m 3 (STP) / (m 2 h ø hvor q A = permeatfluksen av komponent A (m 3 (STP)/h), P A er permeabilitet, l = membrantykkelsen, A m = permeasjonsareal, p = trykk, x 0 og y p fraksjoner Logaritmisk midlere verdi: = ( - ) x0 xf xr /ln( xf / xr) é p ù l Minimum kons. i retentat: x0m = x f 1 + ( a-1) (1-xf) / éa(1 - xf ) + x ù ê f p ú êë úû ë h û 2

ENGLISH TEXT Please refer to the relevant problem in the Norwegian text for figures Problem 1 (25%) A gas treatment plant for the removal of water from natural gases uses TEG (triethylene glycol) as the absorption agent. The TEG, being expensive and environmentally harmful, is recovered in a stripping column where the liquid is stripped in a counter-current column using dry (zero water) natural gas. The liquid contains 98.5 w% TEG at the inlet (fixed feed composition) and 99.5 w% TEG at the outlet (design criterion). Data: Molecular weight of TEG is 150.2 Molecular weight of water is 18.0. The equilibrium of water-teg follows: Hx y = H 1+ H-1 x = ( ) ; 7 e) What is the minimum amount of stripping gas V needed for the separation? Assume L = 1000 kmol/h. f) The number of theoretical trays needed for the separation approaches infinity when the minimum amount of stripping gas is being used. At which end of the column (top or bottom) is the pinch point located? Give a short but otherwise concise and physically acceptable explanation. g) Assume V = 100 kmol/h. Derive the operating line of the column. Combine your result with the equilibrium relation given in the main text, and calculate the number of theoretical trays needed for the separation (tray-by-tray method). Alternatively, you may construct the McCabe-Thiele diagram and calculate the number of trays that way. h) The equilibrium relation given in the main text is easily reformulated into y x = H ; H = 7 1-y 1-x Compare this form of the equilibrium with the operating line derived in c) above and show that the formal (mathematical) conditions for using Kremser s equation are fulfilled. Hint: variable transformation. 4
Problem 2 Series resistances in membrane processes (20%) a) With reference to the figure given in the Norwegian text, explain what we understand by resistances in series for membrane processes. Define the equilibrium distribution coefficient K b) N A expresses the flux of component A. Put up the expression for N A when a component A is being transported from point 1 to point 2 in the liquid system in figure a). Use the symbol D AB for the diffusion coefficient through the membrane c) How does the concentration profile change on the left side of the figure if k =? Explain the meaning of this. c1 Problem 3 Capture of CO 2 from flue gas with membranes (25%) With reference to the serious climate changes we are experiencing today, it is a strong drive for development of new technologies for capture of CO 2 from flue gas at power plants membrane separation is one of these technologies. The driving force for separation in gas membranes is basically the difference in partial pressures over the membrane, p i. It is therefore a need to find solutions where the flue gas can be pressurised in order to increase the driving forces. In the current problem you shall do calculations on a membrane module which is to be placed at Kårstø for testing. Information on the system is given below. The demand on the membrane is to capture 80% of the CO 2, and the captured CO 2 must have 90% purity. a) Make a drawing of the system, indicating in/out streams, and any information you have on the system use the symbols from the given equation for gas separation. b) Show by calculations that we will be able to meet the specification by one step. c) Calculate the necessary membrane area to meet the specifications. (Use the logarithmic mean value for x 0 in the calculations.) How many modules do we need when each module has an area of 1000 m 2? Data given: Feed stream flue gas: 1000 m 3 (STP)/h Composition flue gas (simplified): 10 vol% CO 2, 90 vol% N 2 Pressure feed side: 20 bar Pressure permeate side: 1bar Flux (PA/l) for CO 2 : 0.3 m 3 (STP)/(m h bar) Selectivity ( ) for CO 2 /N 2 : 250 Equations are given below the Norwegian text. 5
Problem 4 Process Control (25%) (c) Explain the principles for feedforward and feedback control. (d) Explain the advantages and disadvantages of feedforward and feedback control You should propose a control structure for the distillation column shown in the figure. The feed is given (comes from another part of the process). The boilup (V) is given ( HEAT IN comes from another part of the process). To stabilize the column one needs to control the following: Pressure (p), level in the reboiler (Lb), level in the reflux drum (Ld), temperature (Tt) in the middle of the top part of the column (rectification section). (c) Classify the variables: Outputs (y), inputs (u), disturbances (d) (d) Give the process matrix from u to y (a table with +,-,0 as entries) and use this to suggest pairings. (e) Make a drawing with your proposed control structure on a flowsheet of the column (with TC, PC and 2 LCs ). (f) Suggest the possible use of feedforward control for the column. 6
