Walking/Hiking Vandring Avdalen farm, Utladalen valley Utladalen a treasure trove of nature trails for those who enjoy walking/hiking Experience cascading waterfalls and picturesque mountain farms. Visit the Utladalen Naturhus centre in Skåri, where coffee and waffles are on offer while you take in the drama of the unique landscape. If you wish to experience the valleys of Western Norway, from the valley floor down below to the highest mountain peaks, Årdal has much to offer. Both Årdal Trekking Association and the Norwegian Trekking Association offer a network of wellmarked trails, colourcoded according to the level of difficulty. You are sure to find a trail that suits you. You can enjoy a simple walk to, for example, Vetti farm, or you can choose longer hikes and even climb the highest peak to get a bird s eye view of the magnificent Sognefjord. The mountains increase in height as you approach Jotunheimen in the east. By using Årdal or Utladalen as a base, you will have many options to explore some wonderful trails. En route, you will definitely find it worth your while to visit Utladalen Naturhus centre, to view the exhibitions and learn about the natural environment and the cultural history of Western Jotunheimen. In Utladalen, you have the option of following short or long trails, covering the whole distance or walking only part of the trail. The possibilities are endless! Some of the walks are suitable for the whole family, for example the walk up to Avdalen farm. Those wanting more of a challenge in Årdal can walk to Kvitingsmorki or Kvernli, or take the Hjelledal valley walk. These walks take you through some steep terrain and require that you are physically fit and have some experience of mountain walking. Tindevegen Tindevegen is the mountain road between Årdal and Turtagrø (32 km) and the shortest route when travelling between Bergen and Trondheim. This tourist road links Årdal to Luster and the Sognefjell National Tourist Route. Tindevegen is usually open from May to midoctober, depending on the weather and driving conditions. The mountain road takes you through some magnificent scenery between the beautiful peaks of Jotunheimen, offering many fine viewpoints. Just a short walk from the road, you get a panoramic view of the Hurrungane peaks and the Store Skagastølstind Mountain in the east, and the inner reaches of the Sognefjord and Skjolden in the west. Vettifossen has been named as Norway s most beautiful waterfall, and for good reason! The most common way of reaching the waterfall is by travelling to Vetti Farm via Folkevegen, which translates as the Road of the People and is named as such due to it having been built by the people on a voluntary basis. From Vetti Farm a path will take you the rest of the way to the waterfall. VETTISFOSSEN Følg Folkevegen innover Utladalen frå parkeringa på Hjelle heilt til du kjem til Vetti Gard. Vegen kryssar elva Utla fleire stader, og det er mange fossar og flott kulturlandskap å sjå heile vegen innover dalen. Vettisfossen med sine 275 meter i fritt fall vart kåra til Noregs vakraste foss for nokre år sidan, og har vore verna sidan 1924. Fossen er eit imponerande syn! Når du kjem til Vetti Gard får du to val: anten å gå til toppen av fossen ved å følgja stien til høgre i stiskiljet, eller du kan gå inn til foten av fossen ved å følgja stien til venstre. Laberg 3 Photo: Jan Ove Skjerping Utladalen Naturhus, or The Nature House of Utladalen, is situated at Skåri, an old farm in the valley Utladalen. The farm was run up untill the 1970s. In 1996 The Utladalen Naturhus Trust started restauring the old cultural landscape, and the old farm was included in this project. The Nature House of Utladalen opened in May 1998, and has to this day been run by The Utladalen Naturhus Trust. The main purpose of the Trust is to give information about the natural and cultural history of Utladalen and the western part of Jotunheimen, through an exhibition in the old barn at the farm. The employees of Naturhuset also run a very popular cafè during the summer. You can rent a guide from Utladalen Naturhus for a walk through the exhibition or for a hike in the area. I Utladalen Naturhus finn du eit informasjonssenter og ein somarkafè. Utladalen Naturhus ligg under Skåri ved Hjelle, eit gamalt gardsbruk i Utladalen som var i drift fram til på 1970talet. I 1996 starta arbeidet med å restaurera det gamle kulturlandskapet. Utladalen Naturhus slik det er i dag opna i mai 1998, og blir drive av Stiftinga Utladalen Naturhus. Føremålet er å gje informasjon om natur og kulturhistoria i Utladalen og VestJotunheimen og ei utstilling er tilgjengeleg for publikum i eine huset. Naturhuset sine tilsette driv også ein populær somarkafè frå 20. juni til 20. august kvart år. Stiftinga Utladalen Naturhus vart etablert i mars i 1997, av Hydro Aluminium, Fylkesmannen i Sogn og Fjordane og Årdal Kommune. Det er Naturhuset som organiserer skjøtselsarbeidet i heimre Utladalen, slik at kulturlandskapet framstår mest mogleg som då det var gardsdrift i dalen. The Copper Mines of Blåberg Start in the town centre of Øvre Årdal. Follow the road Storevegen and Flotavegen to where the mountainroad Tindevegen starts which is the road from Årdal to Turtagrø. In the fourth curve you take off from the road to cross the river Fardøla on a small bridge, og from here a path will take you al the way up to the old copper mines of Blåberg. The mines has not been in use for 300 years, but the traces of this activity is still present. The view from the copper mines is amazing! BLÅBERGGRUVENE Start på Torget i Øvre Årdal. Følg Storevegen og Flotavegen mot Øvstetun og starten på Tindevegen som er bilvegen opp Fardalen mot Turtagrø. I fjerde svingen kryssar de over Fardøla ved å gå over Kleivi bru, og herifrå held de fram på tydeleg sti som fører deg opp til eit gruveområde som for 300 år sidan var i full drift. Dei gamle kopargruvene er eit spennande turmål i seg sjølv for både små og store, og ein får eit vakkert utsyn over heile Øvre Årdal, Årdalsvatnet og mot Bøttejuv. Tya Bakery offer their customers tasty, locally produced baked goods, without artificial addition and with a minimal amount of yeast. Visit their cafè and shop to enjoy cakes, baked goods, their famous foccaccia or locally brewed bear and the best coffee in town. Tya Bakeri er eit relativt nystarta handverksbakeri som ligg i sentrum av Øvre Årdal. Bakeriet i Lom var ein klar inspirator for prosjektet då det starta i 2015, og Tya Bakeri har blitt eit populært innslag i lokalsamfunnet. Tya Bakeri tilbyr kundane sine gode, lokalproduserte bakevarer utan kunstig tilsetjing og med bruk av lite gjær. Lang hevetid og bruk av eigen surdeig gir betre smak og god haldbarheit. Varene sel dei i eige utsal i sentrum av Øvre Årdal, men også på Strondi kafè på Årdalstangen og på Vivendi i Lærdal. I utsalet finn du eit godt utval kaker frå konditorane deira, og dei tilbyr også påsmurte snittar, baguettar og sin eigen berømte foccacia. Tya Bar serverer lokalt øl frå Tya Bryggeri og andre småskala bryggeri. The small fjord community of Indre (inner) Ofredal was a busy place between the early parts of the 19th century and the Second World War, where the water powered both the mill and the sawmill. The woods of Ofredal were, and remain, very high quality. Ytre (outer) Ofredal had a stone quarry, and white granite from that quarry is today found at the Grand Hotel in Oslo. The products of the sawmill in Indre Ofredal were transported to Bergen on a local version of a sloop, the Sognejekt. On the return journey they brought groceries that were sold on to the people of Sogn (Sogningar), who arrived in their rowboats to shop and get their grains ground. The old wooden mill still stands today, and you can hire both the boathouse and farmhouse for accommodation or a get together. Køyrer du gjennom tunnelen frå Seimsdalen til Ofredalen og følgjer vegen heilt ned til fjorden, så kjem til eit historisk anlegg. Frå tidleg på 18hundretalet og fram til siste verdskrigen var dette vesle fjordsamfunnet, Indre Ofredal, ein travel stad basert på vatn som drivkraft til mølla og sagbruket. Skogen i Ofredal hadde, og har, god kvalitet. I Ytre Ofredal fanst det eit steinbrot og kvit granitt frå dette steinbrotet finn du i dag på Grand Hotel i Oslo. Produkta frå sagbruket i Indre Ofredal vart frakta til Bergen med eigen sognejekt og attende hadde ein med kjøpmannsvarer som vart vidareselde til sogningar som kom i robåt for å handla og mala korn. Middagshaugen med sine 1122 moh er eit fantastisk flott turmål for dei med sans for utsikt og motbakkar. Køyr på Fv 53 til Årdalstangen, og stopp ved Haugane. Stien går frå vassbassenget øvst oppe på «Tippen» gjennom skog og vakkert landskap. Du skal følgja stien mot Geisdalen over Geisdalsbekken og opp til Finnsåsen og Middagshaugen. Nokre stader er det luftig og bratt, men stien er tydeleg merka heile vegen. Frå varden på Middagshaugen har du fantastisk utsikt over Årdalstangen, Sognefjorden og mot Hurrungane i Jotunheimen....og mykje meir å gleda seg til! Entertainment & events ARRANGEMENT / HENDINGAR The National Park Festival in Utladalen, is taking place at the end of June with various entertainments for kids and families. Guided hiking araound Utladalen with several "viewpoints". Conserts and entertainment at Camp Svalheim with more. The Fjord and Mountain Festival (June 2th 4th) is an annual event that includes a market with Tivoli and entertainment for all age groups. Tangen på kanten is a race at Årdalstangen, appr. 6 km. An annual event at the Fjord and Mountain Festival. MålRock is a fantastic music festival a joint celebration of rock & roll and the Norwegian nynorsk language. In 2017, the festival will be held the 9th to 12th of August at Meieriparken in Årdalstangen. Haustmyldring The first weekend in October, the Haustmyldring Market includes concerts, fashion shows and special offers/shopping. Vettisløpet is a popular race, held yearly at the end of May, along the river Utla and the impressive and scenic route from Hjelle to Vetti. www.vettisløpet.no Nasjonalparkfestivalen i Utladalen, arrangeras i slutten av juni. Med guida turar, konsertar og variert underhaldning på Camp Svalheim. The historic little community, is a small heritage from the time of transition from agriculture to industrial production and it s also a museum. It includes a mill, a sawmill with a frame saw, which still in the 20th century (70 s) was operational, as well as an old post office and a telegraph, which was closed in 1987.
