(a1) Use the data below to find α for propane-butane (use α = 6 if you cannot find it). (a2) Derive the relationship between y 1 and x 1 (mole fractions light component) for a binary mixture with constant relative volatility. (b) Plot the xy-diagram and sketch the Txy-diagram for the system propane-butane at 1 atm. (c) Flash. The following two streams are mixed Stream F a : 80 mol/s. Saturated vapour at 1 atm. 50% propane. 50% n-butane Stream F b : 70 mol/s. Saturated liquid at 1 atm. 50% propane. 50% n-butane The mixed stream is separated in an adiabatic flash unit operating at 1 atm into a liquid product L and vapour product V (in equilibrium). Find the amount and compositions of the streams L and V. Assume constant relative volatility α. Energy balance: Assume constant molar flows. Problem 5. Membrane separation Gases (30%) An alternative environmentally friendly way of removing CO 2 from gas streams is under development this method is using tailormade membranes where CO 2 is permeating very fast through the material and other gases are being retained on the feed side. The challenges are different depending on type of gas mixture. In order to illustrate this, three different gas streams containing CO 2 are given below. For sake of simplicity, only two components are considered. Process conditions are given for each case. 1) CO 2 from flue gas (5 mole% CO 2 in mixture with 95 mole% N 2 ) Feed pressure: 4 bar, permeate pressure 0,1 bar. Mass flow 50 kg/s 2) CO 2 from biogas (40 mole% CO 2 in mixture with 60 mole% CH 4 ) Feed pressure: 7 bar, permeate pressure: 1 bar. Volume stream: 75 m 3 (STP)/hour 3) CO 2 from natural gas (10 mole% CO 2 in mixture with 90 mole% CH 4 ) Feed pressure: 70 bar, permeate pressure: 1 bar. Volume stream: 10 4 m 3 (STP)/hour membrane with high permeation for CO 2 is chosen for all three cases. The membrane is 2 µm thick, and has the following permeabilities, P : P CO2 = 6. 10-7 m 3 (STP). m/m 2. bar. h P N2 = 3. 10-9 m 3 (STP). m/m 2. bar. h P CH4 = 1,2. 10-8 m 3 (STP). m/m 2. bar. h a. Calculate the minimum concentration of CO 2 which can be obtained in the retentate stream for all three cases b. Calculate the necessarry membrane area for case 3) by using the given equations and the following information: The fraction of CO 2 in the purified natural gas must be no higher than 2,5 vol% when it is sold to Europe. In order to minimize the loss of CH 4 in the permeate stream, the permeate cut ( ) is set to 0,1. c. Explain which kind of configuration you will choose for the membrane module and why (flat sheets, spiral-wound, hollow fibres), and whether it should be cocurrent, counter current or cross flow. Given: Equations and information in Attahcment 1
Problem 6. Drying (20%) a. When a material is being dried, we need to know the temperature of the air used for drying and the humidity content. Define the following parameters which are very important in this context: -wet bulb temperature, dry bulb temperature -adiabatic saturation temperature -percentage humidity, percentage relative humidity b. Use the attached diagram and table (Attachment 2) to find vapour pressure, humidity content (absolute and percentage) and adiabatic saturation temperature for an air stream of temperature 75 0 C, dew point temperature of 30 0 C and 10% relative humidity.
