NORGES TEKNISK-NATURVITENSKAPELIGE UNIVERSITET SIDE AV 6 Oppgave.
NORGES TEKNISK-NATURVITENSKAPELIGE UNIVERSITET SIDE 3 AV 6 Oppgave 3. Hvilken retning peker virvlingsvektoren?
NORGES TEKNISK-NATURVITENSKAPELIGE UNIVERSITET SIDE 4 AV 6 Problem 1. English version A steady and two-dimensional flow of an incompressible fluid is represented by the velocity potential function: (r, ) Arcos Bln r. (1) A and B are positive constants and r and θ are cylindrical coordinates (also known as polar coordinates). a) Determine the velocity components u r and u θ in the r- and θ-directions, respectively. In which direction is the flow far away from the origin, i.e. when r? b) Show that the flow has only one stagnation point and that this point is (r = s, θ = π). Determine s in terms of A and B. c) Determine the stream function ψ(r, θ) such that ψ = 0 in the stagnation point. d) Show that the velocity field is irrotational and determine the pressure P(r, θ) in terms of A and B. e) Explain why the surface given as: r s( )/sin () can be considered as a material surface which represents, for instance, the bow of a ship.
NORGES TEKNISK-NATURVITENSKAPELIGE UNIVERSITET SIDE 5 AV 6 Problem. A circular pipe is placed vertically and serves as a water reservoir. The pipe is closed at the lower end and is open in the top to let the rain in. The length and the inner diameter of the pipe is L and D, respectively. The atmospheric pressure is p a. a) The pipe is half full of water with density 1. Determine the force from the water on the bottom of the tank. b) The temparture varies substantially during the day and the density of the water is reduced to = 0.98 1 due to solar heating. How high is the water level in the tank now if evaporation is neglected. Determine the force from the water on the bottom in this case. The photo (see the Norwegian text) shows a pipeline in Mongolia used to carry water from a hot source to a local bath house. The source is located H = 35 meter above the bath house. The pipline consists of 100 pipe sections, each L = 3 meter long and with an internal diameter D = 60 mm. The sandy water leads to severe sedimentation and the effective wall roughness is 0.60 mm. According to the photo, the alignment of the pipe sections is far from perfect. Let us assume that each pipe connection induces a local loss coefficient (also known as K-factor) equvivalent of K L = 0.. The density and the dynamic viscosity of the hot water are = 980 kg/m 3 and = 0.40 x 10-3 Ns/m, respectively. Local losses at the entrance and exit are negligible. c) How many liters hot water reach the bath house every minute? You can assume that the flow in the pipe is turbulent, but you have to check the validity of this assumption afterwards. d) To illuminate the bath house in the evenings the possibility of installing a small turbine is explored. The turbine is aimed to utilize the enegy of the running water to produce electricity. Optimal efficiency will be obtained at a throughput of 3.0 liter water per second and the efficiency of the turbine is then 79%. How many 40 Watt halogen bulbs can this turbine light? Hint: The friction factor f becomes independent of the Reynolds number if the roughness is sufficiently high.
NORGES TEKNISK-NATURVITENSKAPELIGE UNIVERSITET SIDE 6 AV 6 Problem 3. A liquid with dynamic viscosity and density is drawn upwards from a reservoir by means of a vertical transport belt with constant velocity V. The liquid forms a film with constant thickness h and streamlines parallel with the y-axis along the belt, as shown in the illustration in the Norwegian text. The atmospheric pressure is p o, the gravitational acceleration is g, and the tangential stress between the liquid film and the atmosphere can be ignored. The coordinate system shown in the figure is fixed relative to the reservoir. a) The momentum equation for the liquid simplifies to: dv 0 g (1) dx where v is the velocity component along the y-axis in the coordinate system shown. Formulate realistic boundary conditions for this flow problem. Use these together with equation (1) and determine an expression for the velocity profile v(x) across the film. b) Show that the fluid velocity at the free surface of the liquid film can be expressed as: gh v(h) V () where /. c) Make a sketch of the velocity profile for a case with v(h) < 0 and determine the belt velocity V which makes the volumetric flow rate in the film equal to zero. d) Find an expression for how the vorticity in the liquid film varies from the belt to the free surface. In which direction is the vorticity vector pointing?
