Noregs offisielle statistikk I denne serien blir hovudsakleg primærstatistikk, statistikk frå statistiske rekneskapssystem og resultat fra spesielle teljingar og undersøkingar publiserte. Serien har først og fremst referanse- og dokumentasjonsformål. Presentasjonen skjer vesentleg i form av tabellar, figurar og nødvendig informasjon om datamaterialet, innsamlings- og arbeidsmetodar, samt omgrep og definisjonar. I tillegg blir det gjeve ei kort oversikt over hovudresultata. Grunnlaget for statistikken Talgrunnlaget til denne publikasjonen er henta delvis frå Statistisk sentralbyrå sine eigne undersøkingar, og delvis frå offentlege og private organisasjonar innanfor kultursektoren. Tala i kapittel 1 (tabellane 1.1-1.5), tabellane 2.1, 7.8, 8.7, 9.4, 10.8, 11.9, 12.10-12.11, 13.8, 14.15 og 15.11 baserer seg på utvalsundersaingar. Resten av tala er baserte på fullteljingar innanfor dei ulike områda. 1.2. Omfang Kulturomgrepet som er nytta i denne publikasjonen, inkluderer også område som idrett, kyrkje og annan religiøs aktivitet. Statistikken er delt inn etter emne, fordelt på i alt 17 kapittel og presenterer vesentlege aktørar på kulturområdet. 2. Per i dag er Human-Etisk Forbund det einaste livssynssamfunnet som tek imot offentleg stønad. Bibliotek er ein organisasjon eller ein del av ein organisasjon som har som hovudmål å halde ved like ei samling. Den skal også gjere den tilgjengeleg gjennom tenester som er utførde av tilsette for å imøtekome brukarane sine behov for ulike dokument knytte til informasjon, forsking, utdanning eller rekreasjon (ISO 2789). Museum er ein ikkje-kommersiell, permanent institusjon som skal tene samfunnet og samfunnsutviklinga. Institusjonen skal vere open for publikum. Eit museum skal samle inn, ta vare på og sikre, forske i, formidle og stille ut materielle vitnemål om menneskja og deira miljø. Formålet er å gjere det mogleg for andre å ha studiar, opplæring og opplevingar. Presse er ei felles nemning for aviser, vekeblad og tidsskrift som kjem ut regelmessig. Aviser vert definerte som regelmessige publikasjonar til formidling av aktuelle nyhende og andre kunngjeringar av interesse for folk flest. Feilkjelder Eit kvart statistisk materiale kan innehalde feil. Moglege feilkjelder i denne statistikken vil først og fremst vere at oppgåvegjevarane har gjeve mangelfulle eller feilaktige opplysningar. Feil kan også ha oppstått i arbeidet med materialet i Statistisk sentralbyrå. 4. Nokre hovudresultat Kino og idrettsarrangement er dei mest besøkte kulturtilboda. Kvar for seg oppgav 60 og 54 prosent at dei hadde nytta slike tilbod dei 12 siste månadene. Dei kulturtilboda som hadde lågast besøkstal, er ballett- og operaframsyningar, ballett 8 prosent og opera 6 prosent. Forbruksundersøldngane frå 1993-1995 synte at folk i gjennomsnitt brukte 18 600 kroner per år til fritids- og kulturformål. Dette utgjorde (i 1995-kroner) 9,1 prosent av den totale utgifta til forbruk. Heime-PC og tipping, lotteri og andre spel utgjorde dei største utgiftsgruppene. 15
Kulturstatistikk 1997 Noregs offisielle statistikk Utgifter til kulturformål over Kulturdepartementet sitt budsjett utgjorde 3 027 millionar kroner i 1997. Brutto driftsutgifter til kulturformål i kommunane utgjorde i alt 5 322 millionar kroner. Den største delen av dette, 34,8 prosent, gjekk til idrett, friluftsliv og andre mosjonsaktivitetar. Det vart i alt gjeve drygt 56 millionar kroner i garantiinntekter til kunstnarar i 1997. Det vart delt ut 741 stipend. Nær 1,3 millionar personar besøkte framsyningar ved teater og opera i 1997. I alt vart det halde 6 700 framsyningar. I tillegg kjem turnéframsyningane, 2 400 framsyningar med i alt 333 600 besøkjande, og barneog ungdomsframsyningar, 3 200 framsyningar med i alt 546 000 besøkjande. Det var i alt 1 630 tilsette ved desse institusjonane, av dette 33 prosent i kunstnariske stillingar. Det var i alt registrert 1,7 millionar medlemskap i Norges Idrettsforbund og Olympiske komité i 1997. Av desse var 69 prosent 17 år eller eldre. Organisert bedriftsidrett var den største gruppa, med i alt 358 000 medlemmer. Av dei enkelte forbunda var fotball og ski størst, med kvar for seg om lag 303 000 og 148 000 medlemmer. I alt 8,8 millionar personar besøkte norske museum og samlingar i 1997, av desse 55 prosent betalande. Musea forvaltar i alt dryge 5 000 verneverdige bygningar og 22,8 millionar ulike gjenstandar. Det var i alt 539 museum med i statistikken for 1997, av desse 451 kulturhistoriske. Utlånet ved folkebiblioteka var i 1997 på 18,8 millionar bind. Det svarer til 5,1 boker per innbyggjar. I same perioden var utlånet ved skolebiblioteka på 4,2 millionar bind, som er 8,1 boker per elev. Statistikken omfattar også fag- og forskingsbiblioteka som totalt hadde 3,2 millionar utlån i 1997. I 1997 vart det halde 215 600 framsyningar ved norske kinoar med i alt 21 000 filmtitlar. Av desse var 9,0 prosent norske titlar. Det var i alt drygt 10,9 millionar besøkjande ved kinoane. Dette er i gjennomsnitt 2,5 besøk per innbyggjar. Det var i alt om lag 1,6 millionar fjernsynslisensar i Noreg i 1997. NRK1 hadde ei dekning på 97 prosent, medan T12 dekka 91 prosent av folkemengda. 79 prosent av folkemengda hadde tilgang til tekst-tv. 84 prosent av folkemengda såg på fjernsyn ein gjennomsnittsdag, medan tilsvarande tal for radiolytting var 61 prosent. Det var i alt 154 dagsaviser (medlemmer i Norske Avisers Landsforening) i 1997. Av desse kom 64 aviser ut 6-7 gonger i veka. Desse 64 avisene hadde eit nettoopplag på 2,2 millionar eksemplar. Det var 5 sundagsaviser, og desse hadde eit samla nettoopplag på 760 000 eksemplar. Vekepressa hadde eit samla gjennomsnittleg nettosal på 2,7 millionar eksemplar i veka i 1997. Fagpressa hadde eit samla opplag på 7,5 millionar eksemplar i 1997. Her var det fagblad som var knytte til fritid og kulturelvideell verksemd som utgjorde den største gruppa. Per 1. januar 1998 var det i alt 1 075 menigheiter i Noreg i registrerte og uregistrerte trussamfunn utanfor Den norske kyrkja. Desse menigheitene hadde til saman om lag 260 000 medlemmer. Islam var det største trussamfunnet med i overkant av 46 000 medlemmer. Livssynssamfunnet Human-Etisk Forbund hadde i alt 69 900 medlemmer. Tal for Den norske kyrkja syner at 50 300 personar vart døypte i 1997, 39 100 vart konfirmerte, 14 000 vart vigde og 42 400 vart gravlagde. Det var om lag 1 750 godkjende kyrkjer i Noreg i 1997. I tillegg var det 720 andre kyrkjer/lokale som var innvigde til kyrkjeleg bruk. 5. Statistical basis and collection of data The figures for this publication are partly based on information from Statistics Norway's own surveys and partly from public and private organizations within the Cultural Sector. The figures in chapter 1 (table 1.1-1.5), table 2.1, 7.8, 8.7, 9.4, 10.8, 11.9, 12.10-12.11, 13.8, 14.15 and table 15.11 are based on sample surveys. The remaining figures are based on full counting within the various areas. 1.2. Scope The term Culture in this publication also covers areas such as sports, church and other religious activities. The statistics are grouped into topics and divided into 17 chapters. 2. Terms and variables Dissemination is a joint term for measures aiming to reach an audience with exhibitions, publications and activities. Religious Communities, as used in this publication, refers to organised religious units, registered or unregistered, outside the Church of Norway. The distinction is primarily that a priest or leader in registered religious communities have authority to practice religious activities, cf. Act of 13 June 1969 nr. 25, about religious communities and various others 14, section 3. Such communities may receive public grants. The figures in this publication only cover the communities that have applied for such grants. Members entitled to grants are those that are Norwegian citizens, or foreigners resident in Norway. Members of religious and philosophical communities may not also be members of the Church of Norway. Philosophical Communites are organized units outside the Church of Norway, whose activities are based on a particular philosophy. Members of such communities may receive public grants on the same conditions as religious communities (see above). It is required that the life philosophy should not violate laws and social propriety, cf. Act of 12 June 1981 about central government subsidies to religious and philosophical communities, 1, paragraph 1. At present, Human Ethical Union is the only philosophical community receiving public grants. Library refers to an organization or part of an organization whose principal aim is to maintain a collection. It also makes the collection accessible by employing people to supply services to meet users' needs for various documents related to information, research, education or recreation (ISO 2789). Museum refers to a non-commercial, permanent institution that serves society and societal development. The institution should be open to the public. A museum shall collect, maintain and secure, research, distribute and exhibit material reports about people and their environment. The purpose is to make it possible for others to do studies, training and experiences. The Press is a common name for newspapers, weekly magazines and periodicals that are issued on a regular basis. Newspapers are defined as regular publications to disseminate current news and other notifications that are of interest to most people. Sources of error Any statistical material may contain errors. Possible sources of errors in these statistics are primarily because the institution supplying the data may have given inadequate or wrong information. Errors may also have occurred while the information was being processed at Statistics Norway. 4. Some main results The most visited cultural events are cinemas and sports activities. 60 and 54 per cent respectively responded that they had attended such events during the past 12 months. The cultural events that are least visited are ballet and opera performances, with respectively 8 and 6 per cent. Consumer expenditure surveys from 1993-1995 showed that people used an average of 18 600 kroner on leisure and cultural activities. In 1995, this 17

In the budget of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, expenditure towards cultural purposes amounted to 3 027 million kroner in 1997. Gross operating expenditure for cultural purposes in the municipalities totalled 5 322 million kroner. The greatest part of this, 34.8 per cent went to sports, outdoor activities and other fitness activities. A total of about 56 million kroner was given as guaranteed income to artists in 1997. 741 scholarships were awarded. In 1997, about 1.3 million people visited theatre and opera performances. A total of 6 700 performances were held. In addition, there were 2 400 tour performances with 333 600 visitors, 3 200 children and youth performances with 546 000 visitors. There were 1 630 persons employed at these institutions, 33 per cent of them were employed in the Arts. 1.7 million memberships were registered in the Norwegian Olympic Committee and Confederation of Sports in 1997. 69 per cent of them were 17 years and above. Sports organized by firms or employees, was the largest group with 358 000 members. Football and skiing were the largest individual federations with respectively 303 000 and 148 000 members. 8.8 million people visited Norwegian museums and collections in 1997, of which 55 per cent were paying visitors. Museums administrate about 5 000 buildings deserving preservation and 28.8 million different objects. 539 museums were included in the 1997 statistics, of which 451 were cultural history museums. In 1997, public libraries lent out 18.8 million volumes, or 5.1 books per inhabitant. In the same period, lending by school libraries totalled 4.2 million volumes, 8.1 books per pupil. The statistics also cover special and research libraries that had a total lending of 3.2 million volumes in 1997. In 1997, 215 600 performances were held at Norwegian cinemas with a total of 21 000 film titles. 9.0 per cent of these were Norwegian titles. Almost 10.9 million people visited the cinema. This is an average of 2.5 visits per inhabitant. There were 1.6 million Television licences in Norway in 1997. NRK1 (National Channel 1) had a coverage of 97 per cent, while Commercial TV2 covered 91 per cent of the population. 79 per cent of the population had access to text-tv. 84 per cent of the population watched television on an average day, while the percentage for radio listening was 61. 5 500 books and 750 pamphlets were registered in 1997. 55 per cent of these books were originally published in Norwegian while the percentage for pamphlets was 50. In 1997, there were 154 daily newspapers (members of the Norwegian Newspapers National Union). 64 of these were issued 6-7 times a week with a net circulation of 2.2 million copies. There were 5 Sunday papers with a total net circulation of 760 000 copies. Weekly magazines had a total average net circulation of 2.7 million copies a week in 1997. Technical periodicals had a total circulation of 7.5 million copies in the same year. Technical periodicals connected to leisure and cultural/ideal activities constituted the largest group here. By 1 January 1998, there was a total of 1 075 congregations in Norway of registered and unregistered religious and philosophical communities outside the Church of Norway. These congregations had a total of 260 000 members. Islam was the largest religious community with 46 000 members. The philosophical community Human Ethical Union had 69 900 members. Figures for the Church of Norway indicate that in 1997, 50 300 persons were baptised, 39 100 confirmed, 14 000 wedded and 42 400 were buried. There were about 1 750 approved churches in Norway in 1997. In addition, there were 720 other churches/premises cledicated to church use. 5.
