2 The Mission of the Davison Area Senior Center is to provide, with the help of its staff and volunteers, information and a range of services, activities and volunteer opportunities which promote personal growth, health, friendship and independence for those 50 years and older in Genesee County. 4 Information FALL Vegetable Sloppy Joes Recipe Total Time: Prep: 30 min. Cook: 4 Hrs. Yield: 18 Servings 8 Bacon Strips, cut into 1 pieces 2 Pounds Lean Ground Beef (90% lean) 1 medium Onion, chopped 2 Garlic Cloves, minced 2 C shredded peeled Buernut Squash 2 medium Parsnips, peeled and shredded 2 medium Carrots, peeled and shredded 1 can (12 oz.) Cola 1 can (8 oz.) Tomato Paste 1 C Water 1/3 C Honey Mustard 11/2 tsp. Ground Cumin 11/4 tsp. Salt 1 tsp. Ground Allspice 1/2 tsp. Pepper 18 Hamburger Buns, split 1. In a large skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp, stirring occasionally. Remove with a sloed spoon; drain on paper towels. Discard drippings. In the same skillet, cook beef, onion and garlic over medium heat until beef is no longer pink and onion is tender, 1012 minutes, breaking up beef into crumbles; drain. 2. Transfer to a 5 or 6 qt. slow cooker. Stir in squash, parsnips, carrots, cola, tomato paste, water, mustard and seasonings. Cook, covered, on low until veggies are tender, 45 hours. Stir in bacon. Friday, November 20th, :00 11:00 a.m. ONLY This senior food program follows the federal income guideline of a Family of 1 = $1,383 & a Family of 2 = $1,868. Available to people 60 years or older! You must fill out an application & prove your income & get the approval before receiving it. TeFAP Commodity Program Curbside pick-up! Given out quarterly 4 Times a year March, June, September & December This is an additional food program with income eligibility guidelines for 60 years of age & older with a household size of 1 = $2,126 a month & a household size of 2 = $2,873 a month. Home Delivered Meals GCCARD provides a hot lunch & a cold snack to homebound seniors 60 years & older who are unable to cook and have no one to prepare meals. Call to schedule it. Michigan Facts & Trivia 6 Davison Area Senior Center News & Views November 2020 Detroit is known as the car capital of the world. Alpena is the home of the world s largest cement plant. Rogers City boasts the world s largest limestone quarry. Elsie is the home of the world s largest registered Holstein dairy herd. Michigan is first in the U.S. production of peat & magnesium compounds and second in gypsum and iron ore. Colon is home to the world s largest manufacture of magic supplies. The state Capitol with its majestic dome was built in Lansing in Although Michigan is often called the Wolverine State there are no longer any wolverines in Michigan. Michigan ranks first in state boat registrations. The Packard Motor Car Company in Detroit manufactured the first air-conditioned car in 1939.The oldest county (based on date of incorporation) is Wayne in Sault Ste. Marie was founded by Father Jacques Marquette in 1668, it is the third oldest remaining settlement in the U.S.

7 Information~ Memory, Forgetfulness, and Aging: What s Normal and What s Not? Many older people worry about their memory and other thinking abilities. For example, they might be concerned about taking longer than before to learn new things, or they might sometimes forget to pay a bill. These changes are usually signs of mild forgetfulness often a normal part of aging not serious memory problems. Talk with your doctor to determine if memory, and other thinking problems are normal or not, and what is causing them. What s Normal Forgetfulness and What s Not? What s the difference between normal, age-related forgetfulness and a serous memory problem? Serious memory problems make it hard to do everyday things like driving and shopping. Signs may include: Asking the same questions over and over again Getting lost in familiar places Not being able to follow instructions Becoming confused about time, people, and places Mild Cognitive Impairment Some older adults have a condition called mild cognitive impairment, or MCI, in which they have; more memory or other thinking problems than other people their age. People with MCI can take care of themselves and do their normal activities. MCI may be an early sign of Alzheimer s, but not everyone with MCI will develop Alzheimer s disease. Signs of MCI include: Losing things often Forgetting to go to important events or appointments Having more trouble coming up with desired words than other people of the same age If you have MCI, visit your doctor every 6 to 12 months to see if you have any changes in memory and other thinking skills over time. There may be things you can do to maintain your memory and mental skills. No medications have been approved to treat MCI. Dementia and Aging Dementia is the loss of cognitive functioning thinking, remembering, learning & reasoning and behavioral abilities to such an extent that it interferes with daily life and activities. Memory loss, though common, is not the only sign. A person may also have problems with language skills, visual perception, or paying attention. Some people have personality changes. Dementia is not a normal part of aging. There are different forms of dementia. Alzheimer s disease is the most common form in people over age 65. The chart below explains some differences between normal signs of aging and Alzheimer s disease. Differences Between Normal Aging & Alzheimer s Disease Normal Aging Making a bad decision once in a while Missing a monthly payment Forgetting which day it is and remembering it later Sometimes forgetting which word to use Losing things from time to time Alzheimer s Disease Making poor judgments & decisions a lot of the time Problems taking care of monthly bills Losing track of the date or time of year Trouble having a conversation Misplacing things often and being unable to find them When to Visit the Doctor for Memory Loss If you, a family member, or friend has problems remembering recent events or thinking clearly, talk with a doctor. He or she may suggest a through checkup to see what might be causing the symptoms. The annual Medicare wellness visit includes an assessment for cognitive impairment. This visit is covered by Medicare for patients who have had Medicare Part B insurance for at least 1 year. Memory and other thinking problems have many possible causes, including depression, an infection, or a medication side effect. Sometimes, the problem can be treated, and the thinking problems disappear. Other times, the problem is a brain disorder, such as Alzheimer s disease, which cannot be reversed. Finding the cause of the problems is important to determine the best course of action. A Note About Unproven Treatments Some people are tempted by untried or unproven cures that claim or make the brain sharper or prevent dementia. Check with your doctor before trying pills, supplements or other products that promise to improve memory or prevent brain disorders. These treatments might be unsafe, a waste of money, or both. They might even interfere with other medical treatments. Currently there is no drug or treatment that prevents Alzheimer s disease or other dementias Fax 7

Every time you shop at your local VG s store, save your receipts and encourage your friends & family to do the same. The Valley Area Agency on Aging Telephone Intake and Screening Program will provide screening for all seniors in an effort to mainstream and utilize all programs and services available to seniors in Genesee County. Call Consumers Energy so you can qualify for shut off protection, no late payment charges, and automatic eligibility for payment plans regardless of income. When to Wear Gloves COVID-19 For the general public, wearing gloves is not necessary in most situations, like running errands. CDC recommends wearing gloves when you are cleaning or caring for someone who is sick. Practice everyday preventive actions like keeping social distance (at least 6 feet) from others, washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds (or using a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol), and wearing a mask when you have to go out in public. Gloves are not needed outside of theses instances (for example, when using a shopping cart or using at ATM) will not necessarily protect you from getting COVID-19 and may still lead to the spread of germs. 18 Information~ TRIPS ~ COVID-19 instantly shut down the travel industry and when the time comes, resorts, theme parks and casinos can reopen quickly, airplanes can fuel up and take off, and older Americans can resume their passion for travel. Day trips are that first baby step, so please be patient and when the time comes we will resume the trips that do open up. But just like everything else you will have to follow certain guidelines, like temperature checks before getting on the buses, wearing masks to protect yourself and other people. Thanks for your understanding. Transportation Monday thru Friday We have a van available to bring you to and from (healthy) medical visits, pharmacy, and grocery shopping. Last ride scheduled at 2:00 p.m. You must call the day before to schedule a ride by 1:00 p.m. Cost: $3.00 each way. The van is NOT handicap accessible. Requirements for the transportation services ~ Must be 60 years of age or older, must be able to board the bus independently, must complete a senior center participation form, must pay total fee of the ride at the time of boarding. In the past 24 hours, have you experienced any of the following: Subjective Fever, New or worsening fever, Shortness of breath, Sore Throat, Diarrhea or In the last 14 days have you: Been in close contact with a person diagnosed with COVID-19? Have you traveled domestically or internationally? If You Have Answered Yes To Any Of These Questions, Please Do Not Visit The Center! Know How COVID Spreads ~There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) ~The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. ~The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-toperson. ~Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet). ~Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks. ~These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. ~Some recent studies have suggested that COVID-19 may be spread by people who are not showing symptoms.
