We are grateful to the TBI community, for giving us the time to be in Israel and for me to study there. We are grateful for the delicious food in Israel for Lily and Ben that specifically means a restaurant called The Waffle Bar, Kosher McDonalds, and Magnum ice cream bars. For Tamara and me, our appreciation of Israeli food encompasses a slightly wider variety. On a more serious note, we are grateful for the State of Israel, where we connected with our Jewish past, present, and future. We feel blessed to be living in a time when we have a Jewish State, a place where Jews can immigrate, or visit, and experience a thriving Jewish nation, filled with moving religious experiences, exciting cultural events, and amazing technological advancements. Rabbi continued from page 1 We are also grateful for the many wonderful welcomes we have received since our return. Our tradition teaches us that there are many character traits we should possess, or work to incorporate into our lives. One of the most important of those traits is gratitude. In Hebrew, it s called, hakarat ha tov, which literally means recognizing the good. When we recognize and acknowledge our blessings, we are more likely to feel thankful thankful to God, and thankful to our family and friends for all of the good they do for us. When we are grateful, it can fill us up with positive feelings, because it helps us see our cups as full (or half full), and it redirects us away from the parts of our cups that are empty (or half empty). When we are feeling grateful, we are also more likely to thank other people for the good they do for us. When we wake up in the morning, the first thing we are supposed to do is NOT think about what we re going to wear, our to-do list, or our first cup of coffee (although that s important); instead, we are supposed to think about how lucky we are that we woke up and that we have another day to live our lives, love our family and friends, enjoy things that make us happy, and be productive. That is why the very first prayer we are supposed to say, when we wake up in the morning, is called Modeh Ani. The prayer could have been written to say, Ani modeh (modah, for a female), which would mean, I am thankful. But instead, it s written Modeh (Modah) ani, which means Grateful am I. Why is this significant? Because the first word on our lips is Grateful. We should wake up and reflect on our gratitude. That is the very first state, we should be in a place of thankfulness. Going back to the topic of Israel, there are a lot of people in Israel and outside Israel that help make it thrive. One group I d like thank are the soldiers in the IDF, the Israeli Defense Forces. The soldiers in the IDF risk their lives, every day, to keep Israel safe in a very hostile neighborhood. However, it s easy to take the soldiers for granted except during times of conflict because they are behind the scenes. Nathan Alterman, a 20th Century Israeli poet and journalist was sensitive to the fact that the soldiers efforts could be taken for granted. Five months before the War of Independence, Alterman described the soldiers of the Palmach (the precursor to the IDF) as the silver platter, which [would] deliver the Jewish State to the Jewish people. It s a beautiful image, but it s also troubling because, when a valuable object is delivered on a silver tray, we think about the object, and disregard the tray, upon which it sits. By using this imagery, Alterman is telling us, do not forget how the Jewish State will come into being. Do not forget the efforts, sacrifices, and courage that will be necessary to make the Jewish State a reality. The State of Israel formally recognized, thanked, and celebrated the efforts of the Palmach fighters by opening up a beautiful museum in their honor/memory. If you have not visited it yet, make sure you put it on your itinerary for your next trip to Israel. We, the members of TBI, have a special opportunity to say thank you to a group of special IDF soldiers. On Wednesday evening, September 18, at 7:15pm, TBI is Rabbi continued on page 3 PAGE 2 TBI TABLET SEPTEMBER 2019

PRESIDENT S NOTES From Atlantic City to Port Washington By Rita Shumsky Shalom, I always loved Rosh Hashanah, it meant the new school year, new clothes, and spending time with my family and friends to celebrate the Jewish New Year. I grew up in Atlantic City, New Jersey where there was a large Jewish population and many synagogues of various denominations. On the High Holidays, Atlantic City shut down because most of the businesses had Jewish owners. The large and small Jewish hotels were open, before casinos, and many people came to Atlantic City for the holidays. The Boardwalk was almost as crowded as the synagogues! My family belonged to Community Synagogue/Beth Kehillah, a 2,000 seat Conservative Synagogue started in I loved going to services with my Grandpop Benny, not only could I spend time with him but I could also braid his Tallit. My favorite prayer was Ein Keloheinu, and when we chant it now I think of him. I had my Bat Mitzvah and Confirmation there. I felt so much a part of that Congregation for so many reasons; family, friends, learning, the magic of the Sukkah, celebrating Simchat Torah and Purim to name a few. When I left Atlantic City I found it very hard to replace Community Synagogue. It took many years before I felt that welcome, that comfortable and that spiritual in a synagogue. I found my new home at Temple Beth Israel. As a Temple and community we offer so much. TBI is here for your life cycle events; Aufrufs, Weddings, Brit Milah, Baby Namings, Funerals and Yahrzeits. Come welcome Shabbat with Naomi Less and Friday Night Live. Join us on Saturday morning for Shabbat Services and stay for Kiddush. Or attend a Tot Shabbat with your kids! We have a Sunday morning Minyan. The High Holidays are coming very soon. Join us for services with your family and friends to pray, and be with each other in our beautiful sanctuary. Rabbi Mishkin s sermons are sure to be very insightful. We look forward to hearing Cantor Grainer s beautiful voice leading our community in prayer. Your fellow congregants will be chanting Torah and Haftorah, always a delight. We have a wonderful and progressive Preschool under the direction of Diana Snaider. The children always look like they are having the best time being at TBI. Our Religious School, led by our new Director of Education and Engagement, Anya Morgulis, provides education about Prayer, Judaism, Tikkun Olam and Hebrew. In addition to learning about becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah the children are learning what it means to be a Jew. Programs provided by the Library Committee, Sisterhood, Men s Club and the Social Action Committee are interesting and well received. Look for adult courses to be led by Rabbi Mishkin, Annette Kasle, Cantor Grainer and Rabbi Sharyn Perlman. In early 2020 we will be bringing back Monte Carlo Night and other fun activities for both adults and children. Of course there is the Purim Carnival and Passover and TBI s favorite the Gala! TBI is a special place for all of us. We all have our own reasons why we belong. For those not actively engaged, I invite you to join us. We re doing fun and meaningful things. And know that the wonderful members of our community celebrate and support one another. In this way, congregations are like insurance policies. We need to invest in them even if we re not using them for periods of time. When we do need them, we need to know that they are here for us. L Shanah Tova to you and your families, Rabbi continued from page 2 honored to host several former IDF soldiers. These soldiers will be in the United States as part of a group called Achim L Chaim, or Brothers for Life. Founded in May 2007, Brothers for Life empowers injured combat soldiers to help recently injured combat soldiers reclaim their lives, fulfill their dreams, and continue to serve and inspire others. The injured soldiers share their stories with one another and support each other. In this way, they help transform their trauma into healing. A number of families from Port Washington has been hosting small groups of soldiers from Brothers for Life, nearly every year for most of the past decade. For more information about Brothers for Life, please visit brothersforlife.com. I hope you will be able to join us on September 18th, to hear some of the stories from the soldiers, and to thank them for their service to Israel and the Jewish People. BAT MITZVAH OF Ava Faltischek Ava came into this world and our hearts on September 2, 2006 (the Saturday of Labor Day weekend) in classic Ava fashion early and without much fuss or drama. The first grandchild for both of our families, she was instantly loved and the center of attention. She won us all over, as well as the many people she would encounter, with her big, wondering eyes, her funny faces and little dances. In keeping with Jewish tradition, we named Ava after a family member who passed away before she was born. Her Hebrew name, Leah, is from Kenny s grandfather Leon and her middle name, Charlotte, is after our beloved dog, Cherokee, who passed away while we were only a few months pregnant with Ava. We often say that there are some aspects of Cherokee in Ava the soulfulness found in her eyes and her calmness in certain situations. As a baby, she also had an affinity for knocking over garbage cans and wanting to stick her head in the toilet. We are so proud of the young woman Ava has become. Equally beautiful inside and out, she is kind and compassionate, with a fierce sense of right and wrong and how to treat others. She is a kind and caring big sister and friend, who is sensitive to others feelings and is almost never in a bad mood. And, of course, she continues to make us, and those around her, laugh with her funny faces and silly jokes. Ava is a courageous and determined young woman. She sets out on new adventures and takes on new experiences with great enthusiasm. Whether is was horseback riding, skiing, or ice and field hockey, she fearlessly embraced the challenge to learn each new sport and contribute her passion to her teams. She has a deep love of animals, especially all sea creatures, tigers, wolves and horses. It is this love that inspired her mitzvah project. Upon learning that dumping plastics in the oceans was harmful to sea creatures, she decided to support the Surfrider Foundation, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world s oceans, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network. We are so proud that she shares our passion for supporting not-for-profit organizations and hope she continues to do so throughout her life. She is a voracious reader who, more often than not, we will find her with her head buried in a book. Ava has read her favorites, the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson series more times than we can count. She loves Percy Jackson so much that she has already co-authored two Percy Jackson sequels! Ava is blessed with a wonderful sister Lily, both sets of grandparents, as well as a large extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins with whom she is very close and loves deeply. We are so grateful to our family as well as all of our friends for all of the love and support you have given Ava always. Special thanks to Rabbi Mishkin, Cantor Grainer, Josh Blumenfeld and Ava s many teachers at TBI, both at the Preschool and Religious School, for all of their support and effort in Ava s preparation. We look forward to celebrating Ava as she becomes a Bat Mitzvah. We are so proud of her and excited to see what she accomplishes in life! PAGE 4 TBI TABLET SEPTEMBER 2019

BAR MITZVAH OF Dylan Albanese Dylan was born on Father s Day, We will never be able to top that present! From an early age, Dylan has made us laugh with his great sense of humor and his seemingly never-ending quotes. He loves playing sports and is an avid sports fan. Dylan s favorite sport to play is tennis, and you can find him on the tennis courts most days after school working to step up his game. Additionally, if you need someone to answer any and every possible question about the Mets or the Knicks, Dylan is your guy. As you can tell from the Knicks records, Dylan is loyal, not only as a fan but as a friend, brother, and son. Despite his pranks on his two older sisters, he has a big heart and can always be counted on. His favorite times are hanging out with his siblings, particularly his four-legged sibling Canyon. Dylan has a large extended family and enjoys family events, especially when he gets to see his nine cousins. Dylan works hard at school and knows that he is fortunate to have wonderful teachers, good friends, and the resources to succeed. So, for his Mitzvah project, he is purchasing and donating new school supplies to local kids through a program at the Sid Jacobson JCC. We are very proud of Dylan and for all of the hard work he has done for his Bar Mitzvah. We would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Rabbi Mishkin and Cantor Grainer for all of their support and for working with Dylan to prepare for this special day, and to Cathy Seldin for keeping us organized and guiding us throughout this process. We are extremely grateful to our family and friends for sharing this wonderful occasion with us. TBI S WELCOME BACK BARBECUE SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER PM FOOD, FUN AND FRIENDS WHAT COULD BE BETTER? Join us for the Annual TBI BBQ. Grills will be hot and the food will be delicious! Selichot at TBI Saturday September 21 8pm Dessert, Movie and Discussion As the month of Elul draws to a close, the mood of repentance becomes more urgent. It is a time to begin the process of asking forgiveness for wrongs done to other people. According to Jewish tradition, G-d cannot forgive us for sins committed against another person until we have first obtained forgiveness from the person we have wronged. We will watch the Israeli film, Walk on Water and begin to explore the process of forgiveness. About the film Following the suicide of his wife, an Israeli intelligence agent is assigned to befriend the grandchildren of a Nazi war criminal in order to track down and kill an ex-nazi officer who might still be alive. Pretending to be a tourist guide, he befriends the Nazi s grandson, in Israel. The two men set out on a tour of the country during which the boy challenges the agent s values ELUL / TISHREI 5779 / 5780 TBI TABLET PAGE 5

Peace, Love, Music & Hip Jewish Memories: Taking Stock of Woodstock Fifty Years Later By Mark A. Schneider, TBI Tablet Editor-at-Large I wouldn t call myself a hippie. I never made it to the Woodstock Music Festival because that August 1969 weekend I was visiting the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam followed by joining the crowds listening to music while hanging out at Amsterdam s hippie hangout on Dam Square. But as the 50th Anniversary of Woodstock three days of peace and music momentously passed this summer, I couldn t resist reminiscing on that classic celebration of the festival that attracted upwards of half a million hip fans to a Catskills dairy farm. My magical mystical memory mood was classically set in motion during a recent visit to New York s Metropolitan Museum of Art. I stood in front of Arnold Skolnick s classic Woodstock dove on guitar poster for which he was paid $15 and which was on display in a wonderful Met exhibition titled Play it Loud: Instruments of Rock & Roll. From that point, and with that poster in mind, my Borscht Belt Woodstock anniversary memory played out as I recalled following the intricate details commemorating that three-day event. Co-creators and dreamers of what would become the Woodstock festival included Jewish musical studio, record and concert promoters Michael Lang, Artie Kornfeld and Joel Rosenman. A friend of Joel s, John Roberts, bankrolled the festival at first planning to build a studio in Woodstock because of the town s association with Robert Zimmerman, aka Bob Dylan. These fab four abandoned the studio idea and decided on an outdoor music festival picking the name Woodstock for their music fest because of its artsy and musical cachet. But they knew that the town of Woodstock was too small for what they thought could be as many as 40,000 attendees. They found an acceptable site near the Catskills town of Wallkill. However with weeks to go before the festival, Wallkill s politicos said no to the idea of thousands of hippies descending on their town and cancelled the event. Coincidentally, fifty years later, a similar situation has occurred earlier this year as Michael Lang from the original Woodstock team tried to put together a Woodstock 50th golden anniversary celebration at Watkins Glen in upstate New York. The key financial backer and concert supporter this time around was an affiliate of the Japanese advertising giant Dentsu, a marketing/advertising company that a few year s after the original Woodstock event, I was associated with, and who I actually worked on building their American marketing, advertising and media influence and impact. But back to Enter Jewish dairy farmer Max Yasgur. With the 1969 summer calendar ticking and no suitable location in place, the promoters with nothing yet to promote needed a savior. Michael Lang was sent to check out a farm in Bethel, located west of the Sullivan County towns of Monticello and Liberty, that had been suggested to the promoters. Turns out, the timing was perfect. Max Yasgur needed money to feed his cattle in the summer of 69 because it was a very rainy summer and the rain had ruined the hay. Michael made a deal with Max to rent his farm for $75,000. Once again, the Bethel zoning board tried to bar the festival at the last minute. Max wasn t going to take it anymore. His son Sam has said that his father faced down the board and said, What are you planning to do next? Are you going to try to throw me out of town because I am a Jew.? The rest of the story, as they say is history. The Catskills hosted Woodstock for three days and nights and it seemed like just about everyone showed up to enjoy the event. There have been documentaries, books, countless articles and 50 years of stories and conversations about Woodstock and the Woodstock generation. Max Yasgur s farm was ruined by the crush of a half million attendees.a piece of his farm and his house is located on Yasgur Road is now owned by Jeryl Abramson who is hoping to turn her bit of history into a campground and with Air B&B s help, rent out a room as well. Yes, the Max Yasgur name and Woodstock story are legendary. His cousin, Abigail Yasgur wrote and illustrated a children s book entitled Max Says Yes. His son, Sam, wrote a memoir called Max S. Yasgur: the Woodstock Festival s Famous Farmer. How famous? One anecdote noted that a number of years after Woodstock, Max and his wife Miriam visited Israel and met former Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion. When Ben-Gurion was told that the Yasgurs were from Bethel in New York, he is reported to have said, Oh, wasn t that where Woodstock was held? Peace, love and music to all. And a happy, healthy and hip L Shannah Tovah to you and your family. Woodstock questions or comments? Please me at copymark@gmail.com. PAGE 6 TBI TABLET SEPTEMBER 2019

Welcome Anya Morgulis, New Director of Education and Engagement As I reflect on my first several days in the role of Director of Education and Engagement, I m filled with thoughts of community. One of my favorite things to do on a Friday night in Jerusalem was just to walk the streets. Seeing people walking to and from shul, carrying yummy treats on their way to friends or family for a meal, and my very favorite, hearing the familiar melody of Shalom Aleichem being sung, the notes floating through the open windows and wafting over me as I pass. What a beautiful custom, to wish one another peace before breaking bread together, welcoming the angels into our homes to bless us with peace for this time we set aside each week. These walks gave me the opportunity to take in what Jerusalem has to offer at all times, but we are sometimes too busy to notice: the old combined with the new; the familiar embracing the unique; the Chassid and the hipster acknowledging one another all cross paths here, on the streets of Jerusalem. As I enter this new role, I look forward to the community embracing these opportunities for crossing paths with all that there is to offer in Jewish education today. Working to form kesher, or a connection, between our learners, their families, the educators, the texts, and traditions will remain a priority. We will also continue to seek opportunities for engaging through doing, being, and experiencing Judaism. In order to do this, we will continue to rely on talented and connected leaders, strong relationships, a compelling and shared vision, and the resources to bring this vision to life. I chose Temple Beth Israel because I could tell very quickly that this was a place that would value inclusivity, would praise creativity, would be unafraid of taking risks, and would be bold in pursuit of growth. I feel so blessed that TBI chose me back, and am thrilled for all that is to come. I look forward to getting to know each of you as we embark on this journey together, so I ask that you please reach out to me, stop by and say hello, send me an (anyam@tbiport.org) or give me a call ( ext. 15). We can only move forward together, so I m excited to get to know everyone on a personal level. Temple Beth Israel and The Community Synagogue invite you to an up close and personal evening with: BROTHERS FOR LIFE INJURED ISRAELI SOLDIERS HELPING INJURED ISRAELI SOLDIERS Come hear their powerful stories and learn about this incredible brotherhood! Temple Beth Israel, Port Washington Wednesday, September 18 at 7:15pm (Dessert Reception following) Brothers for Life is a non-profit organization, created and run by disabled Israeli officers, that provides critical and immediate help to injured Israeli combat soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the safety of the Jewish people. The program has several components: touring the country, a speaker s forum and community service which takes place in Tel Aviv. As part of its affiliation with JNF, Forest Days are held in different JNF forests throughout the country. For Marcia Bercov, one of the most meaningful parts of her CAARI experience was the privilege of working in the forests. Once a week CAARI volunteers travel to an area are handed work gloves, tools and receive an orientation of what to do. They can be trimming underbrush to help prevent the spread of fires or helping to rebuild a stone wall in the manner it was constructed hundreds of years ago. A Speaker s Forum consists of journalists, author, politicians and people with an interesting story. One year a farmer spoke about his olive trees and his production of olive oil and the expansion of an entire product line of olive oil based products. Touring Israel range from a variety of sites, from an artist village in Ein Hod to Beit Ruth a village for girls who can t live at home. CAARI volunteers have also traveled to visit Shimon Keinan a shofar maker, who uses horns from a variety of animals. If you are looking for a winter getaway from two to six weeks Israel is the place to be to sightsee, volunteer and meet other retirees.
