This year TBI has an additional reason to be joyous as we honor Cantor Blum and his wife Gerri as our Hatan Torah & Kallat Bereishit (literally Groom or the Torah & Bride of Genesis). Join us on Friday, October 13th for the dancing, flag waving and the special Aliyah, when we read the final portion of Deuteronomy and the beginning of Genesis to signify that our relationship with the Torah never ends. As is the custom at TBI we will lead our bride and groom to the bimah with a processional and honor them under a huppah. Who knows maybe there will be a wedding cake? Tashlich 2: A Second Chance to Cast Away Your Sins On the first day of Rosh Hashanah, before sunset, Jews traditionally proceed to a body of running water, and symbolically cast off (Tashlich) their sins. At TBI we are giving you another chance to cast off your sins. Rabbi Mishkin will conduct Tashlich 2, on Sunday, September 24 at 10am at Stannards Brook Park. The ceremony includes readings and the last verses from the prophet Micah (7:19), He will take us back in love; He will cover up our iniquities. You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea, This is a special interactive program to get you thinking about leaving your shortcomings behind and starting the new year with a clean slate. Hello TBI Family Allow me to introduce myself. I am Nona, and have lived with the Tung family for 6 years. I am a Sphinx cat, hairless. You probably know my movie star cousin Ralph, alias Mr. Bigglesworths who was featured with Dr. Evil in Austin Powers. Yeah, he made bank on that movie. Anyway, the Tung s are great to have as People pets. As you can see by my picture, I do live the good life. Ok, maybe I have to lose a little weight but my extra fat just makes me more desirable! I have to share their love with 2 dogs, but its fine, because there is so much love to go around. Ginger, their 13 year old dog is a good sport, who I occasionally terrorize by kicking her out of her bed (it is rather soft) and Bridget who constantly plays with me when her Prozac kicks in. They rescued her from living in a crate for 7 years so she has anxiety issues, but her medication has been very helpful! My oldest kid owner Alex, is the easiest to upset. She lives in NYC. She s not around a lot, so I like to sneak under the covers of her bed. When she visits she gets so mad at me because even though I am hairless, she is still allergic to me and really starts scratching! I usually have a high success rate of hiding in her room. Ah, the power I hold over her. I know I am Zoey s favorite, as she constantly is taking pictures of me. Check out my Instagram Nonagram. She just passed her RN boards and has moved back home from New York City. I will be the benefactor of all of her attention as she finishes her degree and starts working. I don t know how long this will last, but I sure am looking forward to it! David will be leaving soon for his last year at Penn State University. He finds me most entertaining, and has been around this summer working with George my Adult People pet half the time and the other half he is in the city developing his contacts for his promotion company. He is on the phone a lot, always working on something! I like to roll under his feet on the patio and distract him. I have hardly seen Harlee, as she spent 2 months in Hong Kong working for Under Armor and now will be going back to University of Delaware. I hope she designs me a coat for this winter, as I seem to be always cold! My adult pet owners Aren and George keep all of us well fed, happy and productive allowing us to be the best we can be. We are very lucky to be living in Port Washington surrounded by friends, fellow animal pets and a great community. 5 BAT MITZVAH OF Alexa Rynston-Lobel Alexa Brooke was born on Friday, August 13, Friday the 13th proved to be lucky for us as we welcomed our beautiful little girl into our family. From the day she was born, she was always small in size, but big in determination and personality. As a baby, she faced some serious medical problems, but her feistiness pulled her through as it has for pretty much everything in her life. Her determination has helped her to excel at anything she puts her mind to, whether it be softball, gymnastics or figuring out the moves to the dances in Matilda. This part of her personality is not surprising as Alexa was named for two very feisty and wonderful women, Rivka (Ruth), her grandma Estelle s sister, and Bluma (Beverly), her mother s best friend s mother. Alexa also shares their sense of humor, their compassion and their beautiful blue eyes. Alexa s compassion is often demonstrated in her tremendous love for animals, especially dogs. She has an amazing bond with our dog, Maizy who will only eat things that belong to Alexa (socks, hair ties, homework ). In addition to Maizy, we always have other dogs in our house. We board dogs and foster labradoodles and goldendoodles for Doodle Rescue Collective. Alexa loves to play with the dogs and she has learned the importance of being responsible for their care (even though mom is typically the one taking care of them). In fact, her Mitzvah project is to raise money for Doodle Rescue Collective (details to follow). Alexa s compassion is also shown when she feels compelled to include those who are often excluded or when she sees a peer sitting alone. It is not unusual for Alexa, who is shy herself, to ask someone who is alone, to join her and her friends. Alexa and her friends can often be found playing classic board games as well as goofing around, or dancing. You can also find Alexa goofing around with her big brother, Eric. They get on each other s nerves, but there is no doubt that Eric has his sister s back no matter what. Though she won t admit it, she does look up to him and she will miss her big brother when he goes off to college. Alexa has watched her brother play baseball since she was a little girl. It wasn t long before she decided that she too could play. From the time she was 3, she was batting and pitching like a pro. You wouldn t expect it from looking at her, but she can hit with the best of them and she is a talented pitcher. Alexa pitched for the 7th grade softball team this past year and she has played PYA softball since 1st grade. When it comes to anything Alexa enjoys, she works hard to become the best she can, but when it comes to doing work, Alexa loves to procrastinate However, she has been steadily working hard to prepare for her Bat Mitzvah. She did this with the incredible help, patience and guidance of Cantor Blum, Rabbi Mishkin and all of the teachers from TBI religious school and of course, Alice Talmud. A huge thank you to all of you. Preschool News: Welcome Diana Snaider Diana Snaider hit the ground running on August 15 as our new Preschool Director, after spending a summer as Unit Head at Camp Blue Ridge. She is so excited to welcome everyone back to school and show off our refinished classroom floors and carpets and the newly painted classrooms. Diana can t wait for the three s to see all the new furniture in their classroom, as a result of TBI s participation in Quality Stars. Diana has what it takes to direct our Preschool as a former Pre-K teacher for 5 years in our fours program. She has a Masters in Elementary Education from Hunter College and a certificate in special education from birth 6th grade from Touro College. While not at TBI, Diana spends time traversing the state with her husband, Andrew and her son Justin who plays ice hockey and her daughter, Ashley who is a gymnast and loves Broadway musicals. Shinshinim Are Back Once again two Israeli Shinshinim are returning to TBI to work with our children in the Religious School and integrate into our community. Eden Elfasi and Tomer Kazes, both 19 will be here for one year and return to Israel in June to begin their army service. The Shinshinim Program established by a grant from UJA and run through the Sid Jacobson JCC, is designed to give a taste of Israeli life to our students. The Shinshinim will teach our Religious School students about Israel using their experiences, stories and and interactive games. For Eden and Tomer this is not their first trip to the US as both have been here through other Israeli educational exchange programs. We heard Eden likes tennis and Tomer is a swimmer and music aficionado. Parents tell your children not to miss the chance to get to know them. We encourage families to invite the Shinshinim to their homes for a family dinner or activity. Each ShinShin stay s with a host family in the Long Island Community. 8 Byline By Bernie: Reflecting Back on TBI Bulletin Beginnings By Mark A. Schneider, TBI Tablet Editor-at-Large. It ll never be on ebay. There s one very personal and very rare collector s item I proudly own that I would never sell no matter what the price. It s the first ever edition of the Temple Beth Israel RePORT, our original printed synagogue bulletin. Historically speaking, my bulletin issue is in perfect condition. No latke or knish stains to mar the copy. The issue date: January 15, 1982, almost 36 years ago (aka 2x Chai). What made me take a fresh look at this particular item is because I knew there was a special story behind that first issue, as well as many issues that followed. When that first issue arrived at the homes of congregants, there were only two articles on the front cover: One article was titled Reflections From the Rabbi by Neil Kurshan. The second was an bylined article by Editing and putting together that first issue was a personal challenge. In the few years I had been a member of TBI, I diligently read the typewritten, mimeographed bulletins that arrived every month. Great information, but the amateurish look reminded me of the summer camp newspapers that I wrote for during my camp days in the Catskills. I felt I knew that a good synagogue bulletin should look like. Growing up in Queens, the synagogue bulletin of my childhood was professionally printed and staple-free. I even wrote monthly columns for it following my Bar Mitzvah. That being said, I wanted my Temple Beth Israel to have the best bulletin. Putting together that first TBI bulletin issue meant articles and advertising. When I joined the Temple Beth Israel synagogue family in 1978, Bernie Hulkower was TBI President so all the new Port Washington Soundview area residents who moved in around the same time and joined TBI were graciously welcomed by him. Four years later as I looked to take on the challenge of creating a professional bulletin, a new TBI President (Gil Hammer) and the board allowed me to move forward. I knew synagogue bulletin advertising would be a good fund raiser to offset the higher costs as well as to guarantee advertisers a smart, upscale audience. Unlike today s extensive list of longterm TBI advertisers, that first issue had only one advertisement. The headline read: Earnest Young Man Needs Money for College with copy that said that a part time Fuller Brush salesman would like to show you his catalog. That first TBI bulletin advertiser? Bernie s son, Danny. Over the years that followed, Bernie Hulkower, along with his beloved wife Joan continued to write articles that were an important part of the TBI RePORT, most notably stories of their travels and adventures to and through Israel with CAARI, Canadian/American Active Retirees in Israel Personal details were often included as when it was noted that on one trip, Bernie worked at the Ba al Shem Tov Yeshiva where he helped grade school students with their English pronunciation. I remember getting post deadline calls from the Hulkower s asking if they could get an article into the next issue. It was always worth stopping the presses. to add articles like the one headlined Come Join the Minyan, which invited Sunday morning Minyanairs to enjoy the camaraderie and be there for those saying Kaddish. Seven years ago, there was another story to be told as we put together a synagogue talent show. The show was named TBIdol with many performers even wearing their official TBIdol shirts. The program talent line-up included Bernard Hulkower, introduced as The Yiddisha Hulk singing in Yiddish. Yes, for so many decades Bernie brought his style of creative enthusiasm to Temple Beth Israel in so many ways. I kept thinking of that as I stared at my collector s first issue of what became the award-winning Temple Beth Israel RePORT, specifically focusing on that front page article bylined by Bernie Hulkower with the headline: What This Country Needs is a Well-Designed Yarmulke that Won t Fall Off. His entertaining article noted that many men fastened the yarmulkes on with bobby-pins, but for that you need hair, and then raising the question, would there be a market for yarmulkes with chin straps?
