T he C e n t e nni a l Tou r celeb r at i n g t h e St. O l a f c ho i r s 1 0 0 t h a nniver sary I n 191 3, f i f t y si nge r s from a small college in the Midwestern United States boarded a steamer bound for Norway, eager to bring their beautiful harmonies to the country their forebears had once called home. Led by conductor and composer F. Melius Christiansen, a native of Larvik, the choir traveled to Stavanger, Trondheim, Lillehammer, and Kristiania. Audiences were dazzled and delighted. We heard singing as never before, gushed one critic. We were left in a state of wonderment that such a choir could attain so great a skill in the art of singing! Choir members at Geirangerfjord, near Merok, 1913. The St. Olaf Choir returned to Norway on subsequent tours in 1930, 1955, 1980, 1993, and 2005. This summer, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the ensemble and its first Norwegian tour the group will once again return to Norway. Beginning with a performance at the Oslo Hundreår sturné I 1913 gikk 50 sangere fra et lite college i USAs Midtvest om bord i et dampskip med kurs mot Norge, ivrige etter å bringe sine vakre harmonier til landet deres forfedre en gang hadde kalt hjem. Ledet av dirigent og komponist F. Melius Christiansen, opprinnelig fra Larvik, reiste koret til Stavanger, Trondheim, Lillehammer og Kristiania. Publikum var imponert og henrykt. The St. Ol af Choir A Tradition of Excellence in Singing With 75 mixed voices, the St. Olaf Choir is recognized as the premier college choir in the United States. Founded in 1912, the choir has set the standard for choral excellence and remained at the forefront of choral artistry for the past century, building on the tradition originated by its Norwegian immigrant founder. F. Melius Christiansen and the St. Olaf Choir transformed American choral music. A skilled conductor and composer, Christiansen remade America s early 20th century choral tradition by introducing a cappella singing of the highest caliber, creating a model for excellence When they opened their mouths to sing, an even wall of sound emerged: words clear, notes true. But more than that, the notes were felt. As the music moved through the rows of singers, their bodies swayed like a field of long grass in the wind. The New Yor k Times, February 2005 and innovation. The choir became one of the first to regularly tour the nation, began recording in the 1920s, and performed on-air when radio was in its infancy. The annual St. Olaf Christmas Festival has been broadcast internationally on radio and television. The St. Olaf Choir also has been featured in a number of symphonic collaborations, including, most recently, performances of Maurice Duruflé s Requiem for Voices, Orchestra, and Organ with the Minnesota Orchestra under the baton of Osmo Vänskä. Over the years, the singers have performed under the direction of Sir Neville Marriner, Neeme Järvi, Sir David Willcocks, Stanisław Skrowaczewski, Andreas Delfs, Helmuth Rilling, and the late Robert Shaw. Touring, recording, and broadcasting are all major components in the artistic life of the St. Olaf Choir. Under the direction of current conductor Anton Armstrong, the choir has traveled to Austria, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Australia, and New Zealand. In 2005, the choir toured Norway its sixth visit. The St. Olaf Choir s ever-expanding discography now features 27 recordings, including Reflections of Norway, produced in 1980, and the bestselling Great Hymns of Faith series, which has sold more than a quarter-million copies around the world. Anton Armstrong, a St. Olaf graduate who holds advanced degrees in choral conducting from the University of Illinois and Michigan State University, has led the choir since 1990. Armstrong frequently has conducted ensembles and appeared before regional, national, and international gatherings of the American Choral Directors Association, International Federation of Choral Music, Choristers Guild, and the Orff-Schulwerk Association. In recent years he has guest conducted such notable ensembles as the Utah Symphony and Symphony Chorus, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Westminster Choir, and the American Boychoir. 2

A special holiday broadcast of the choir is transmitted via shortwave radio from Minneapolis to Norway. 1940 A holiday feast of Norwegian foods, including fløtegrøt, lutefisk, meatballs, and krumkaker, is served on campus a tradition that remains today. 1945 Einar Haugen, class of 1928, is sent to Oslo as a cultural attaché of the U.S. government. 1954 Norwegian Lutheran bishop Eivind Berggrav, famous for his opposition to the Nazi occupation of Norway, visits St. Olaf. 1955 The choir tours Norway for the third time. 1958 Students welcome Princess Astrid to the St. Olaf campus. 1965 Crown Prince Harald visits St. Olaf. 1966 The St. Olaf Orchestra spends January studying in Oslo. 1968 King Olav V visits the campus for the second time. 1975 King Olav V arrives via helicopter at St. Olaf for his third visit to the college. 1978 The college awards an honorary degree to Crown Princess Sonja. 1980 The choir performs at the Bergen International Festival. St. Olaf President Sidney Rand is named U.S. Ambassador to Norway. The recording Reflections of Norway is released. 1992 The choir adds Pål på haugen to its repertoire. 1993 The choir is the only non-norwegian group featured at the opening ceremonies of the Bergen International Festival, commemorating the 150th anniversary of Edvard Grieg s birth. 2005 The St. Olaf Band, Choir, and Orchestra travel to Norway to celebrate the centennial of Norway s peaceful dissolution from Sweden. The television special A St. Olaf Christmas in Norway is recorded at the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, then broadcast in the United States and throughout Scandinavia.
